Luminous Mediterranean View of Sitges Church with Palms and Flowers oil painting

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Luminous Mediterranean View of Sitges Church with Palms and Flowers Artist: López-Valle Title: View of Sitges, Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla Medium: Oil on canvas Period: circa 1970–1979 Signature: Signed lower left Artwork dimensions: 19 × 24 cm / 7.48 × 9.45 in Framed dimensions: 33 × 38 cm / 12.99 × 14.96 in Frame: Decorative frame included Provenance: López-Valle oil paintings exhibition, documented on the reverse with original exhibition card dated 1979 Condition: Very good overall condition. Stable paint surface. Minor age-related wear to the frame, consistent with age. Ready to hang. DESCRIPTION A charming and luminous Mediterranean oil painting depicting the iconic Church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla in Sitges, one of the most recognizable architectural landmarks of the Catalan coast. The composition captures the church from a highly desirable viewpoint, framed by tall palm trees, lush Mediterranean vegetation and a vivid foreground of red flowers. The result is a small but visually rich painting with strong decorative presence, full of coastal light, architectural character and warm Mediterranean atmosphere. The artist uses a loose, expressive brushstroke and a bright palette of turquoise blues, sandy ochres, fresh greens and floral reds. The impasto in the sky, church façade and garden areas gives the surface a lively texture, while the diagonal path leads the viewer naturally toward the historic church and its bell tower. This is exactly the kind of Mediterranean coastal subject that performs well with international collectors: intimate scale, recognizable location, architectural charm, palm trees, flowers, sunlight and Spanish post-impressionist atmosphere. A little Sitges jewel, basically the painting equivalent of a terrace table with sea breeze and no tourist asking where the beach is. The original exhibition card preserved on the reverse, dated 1979, documents the work’s presence in an oil paintings exhibition dedicated to López-Valle, adding period context and collectible appeal. Its modest size makes it especially suitable for interiors, gallery walls, Mediterranean-style decoration, coastal homes, libraries, bedrooms or refined small spaces where a luminous European landscape can act as a concentrated window of light. European art with a Mediterranean soul. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY López-Valle was a Spanish painter active in the second half of the 20th century, particularly associated with traditional oil painting and Mediterranean subjects. His work reflects the enduring appeal of Spanish coastal landscape painting, combining architectural views, garden settings and luminous color with a direct, post-impressionist handling of paint. This painting is especially interesting because the original exhibition card on the reverse places the artist within a documented exhibition context in 1979, confirming that his works circulated publicly during the period. López-Valle’s paintings are appreciated for their decorative quality, approachable scale and ability to capture recognizable Spanish places with freshness, color and atmosphere. ARTISTIC CONTEXT / PICTORIAL INSPIRATION This work belongs to the tradition of Catalan and Spanish Mediterranean landscape painting, a school deeply connected to light, coastal architecture, gardens, palm trees and open-air observation. Its luminous handling of color and its decorative view of Sitges recall the atmosphere sought by collectors of artists such as Santiago Rusiñol, Eliseu Meifrèn, Joaquim Mir and Josep Amat, painters who helped define the poetic and chromatic identity of the Catalan coastline. While López-Valle maintains his own modest and direct pictorial language, the painting clearly participates in that same Mediterranean lineage: sunlit architecture, garden foreground, loose brushwork, atmospheric blue sky and an elegant sense of place. This makes the piece attractive not only as a view of Sitges, but also as part of the broader collecting category of Spanish impressionist and post-impressionist coastal painting. “Still Life, 1936” by Katharine "Kitty" Duff Church British Modern Oil Signed

Located in Yardley, PA

“Still Life, 1936” by Katharine "Kitty" Duff Church (British, 1910-1999). This large, early painting by Katherine Church is among her finest canvases of the period. Characterized by its bold color palette, simplified forms, and expressive brushwork, this composition centers around a tabletop adorned with various objects: potted plants, a ceramic dish, bottles, and what appear to be books or papers. The two potted plants provide contrasting elements: on the left, what appears to be a cyclamen with red blossoms and delicate leaves, and on the right, a lush green plant with darker foliage. These plants, painted with loose, textured strokes, add an organic quality to the otherwise structured arrangement. The tabletop is cluttered yet thoughtfully composed, featuring additional objects like a clear, faceted glass bowl, a small bottle, and books or pads in striking red and green. The dynamic use of color blocks and the juxtaposition of shapes (round pots against rectangular books) create a sense of rhythm and harmony. The background is darker and less defined, emphasizing the brightly lit tabletop. Church's brushwork is gestural and modernist, leaning toward abstraction, challenging traditional still life conventions. This painting reflects Church’s interest in balancing everyday objects with bold artistic expression. It conveys both the simplicity and complexity of daily life, transforming an ordinary moment into a vibrant and engaging work of art. This work is oil on canvas and is signed and dated in the lower right. It is housed in its original gessoed frame and retains various labels and inscriptions on the reverse. Size: 28.25 inches tall by 36 inches wide (painting) 34 inches tall by 42 inches wide by 2 inches deep (frame) Provenance: Private collection, NY; Acquired from the above About the artist: Born in Highgate, north London, Katharine Church, known as ‘Kitty’ amongst friends and family, always wanted to paint. She trained at the Royal Academy of Arts between 1930-1933 and at the Slade between 1933 and 1934. In her early years Kitty exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. Her first solo exhibition was in 1933 at the Wertheim Gallery. Other artists who exhibited there included Christopher Wood, Victor Pasmore and Cedric Morris. Kitty also showed with the New English Art Club, the London Group and between 1937-1947 her work was exhibited at the influential Lefevre Gallery, which supported avant-garde artists such as Henry Moore, Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth. In 1954 the artist was invited to take part in the Figures in their setting exhibition held at the Tate Gallery. Henry Tonks and Philip Wilson Steer had a strong influence on Kitty’s early work, but it was her friendship with Ivon Hitchens that liberated her painting technique. In 1936 Kitty married Anthony West, the son of writers Rebecca West and H.G. Wells. The couple initially lived in London before moving to Quarry Farm, Chicksgrove, Tisbury, near Salisbury, where they brought up their children Caroline and Edmund. There they hosted many of their friends, including the New Zealand painter Frances Hodgkins. Other regular visitors before the War included John and Mywafany Piper, Ralph and Frances Partridge, Noel and Catharine Carrington, Julian Trevelyan and Mary Fedden. For many of those who visited Kitty would organise painting expeditions. After the war Kitty and Anthony separated, with Anthony moving to the United States. Anthony West moved to the United States to work as a journalist for The New Yorker. In the early years after their parting Kitty visited most years with the children. In the 1960s Kitty purchased Sutton House and ran the Hambledon Gallery at Blandford Forum. There she promoted the work of her early art-school friends Mary Fedden and Julian Trevelyan, alongside work by the Pipers, John Craxton...

Antique oil painting, Boy Fleaing a Dog, Gerard ter Borch, Dutch golden age

Located in DEVENTER, NL

Gerard ter Borch (II) (1617-1681), copy after, around 1700 'Boy Fleas a Dog' Oil on canvas Professionally restored (cleaned and relined) In modern frame in 17th century style Dimensions excl. frame: 33 x 27,5 cm. Dimensions incl. frame: approx. 50 x 45,5 cm. Depcited is a boy busy fleaing a dog. The boy sits on a chair with the dog on his lap. On a table on the right there is a book and a pen. On a wooden bench lies the boy's hat. What is unique about this painting by Ter Borch, is the relationship that is depicted between human and animal. Mostly animals like dogs where depicted as an attribute in paintings in the 17th century, and sometimes used to symbolize certain character traits. This boy is lovingly caring for his dog, which he is giving his full attention. Another interesting detail is that Ter Borch's brother Moses, was probably the model for this painting. Ter borch often used family members as models for his paintings. Moses was also a very talented painter and draughtsman. Several copies of this work by Ter Borch are known. One of these copies is in the collection of the Dutch Rijksmuseum (Image included in the image gallery (last image)). The original painting is in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek museum in Munich, Germany. Gerard ter Borch, also known as Gerard Terburg, was a Dutch genre painter who lived in the Dutch Golden Age. He influenced fellow Dutch painters Gabriel Metsu...

Bedroom Interior - French Mid 20th Century Post Impressionist Oil Painting

Located in Sevenoaks, GB

Beautiful 1940's French post impressionist oil on board by Simon Simon-Auguste. The work depicts a simple bedroom interior with shoes, candle and a single picture on the wall. Signed lower left and presented in a swept impressionist style frame. Provenance: Chilham Castle, Kent Artist: Simon Simon-Auguste (French, 1909-1987) Title: Bedroom Interior Medium: Oil on board Size: 25.5 x 30.5 inches (65 x 77 cm) including frame Simon Joseph Simon-Auguste (20 April 1909 – May 1987) was a French artist, known for his intimate paintings, mainly portraits, nudes and still lifes. His production is characterized by a calm, intimate feel, and the effective use of glaze. Born in Marseille, Simon-Auguste was the son of Antonin Auguste, a cabinetmaker specialized in restoring furniture in the chateaux of the Provence. Simon studied at the École communale of his neighborhood at rue Eydoux, in Marseille, where he excelled in design. In 1931 Simon-Auguste finished his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts and won the Stanislas-Torrents award. He was commissioned to execute the mural decorations of the town hall in Allauch. He began exhibiting in Marseille where doctors and lawyers purchased his paintings. In 1932 he invested into a 6-month stay in Paris where he frequented the Louvre Museum and became specially interested in the Camondo Collection. At the invitation of art dealer Adolphe Basler, he took part in the Moins de trente ans exhibition, at the Galerie de Sèvres, along with Jacques Despierre, André Hambourg, Louis Dideron, Léon Couturier, among others. He presented a nude, a still life, and a view of the Jardin du Luxembourg. He also started dealing with Georges Petit and the Galerie Vildrac. In 1933 Simon-Auguste had his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Detailles, at the Canebière in Marseille which contributed to his success. He displayed 40 pieces (paintings, watercolours and sketches), mostly nudes and genre scenes. In 1934 he married a philosophy student who would become a journalist under the pseudonym of Michele Seurière. For his second solo exhibition at the Galerie Detailles a few landscapes and marines were added to his portfolio. During the 1930s Simon-Auguste explored subjects around nudes and landscapes. Later these evolved into children, still lifes and locals, full of intimacy and simplicity, which gained him a lot of recognition. Among these, we find La fillette au bol and Tête d'Enfant, which were purchased by the Musée Longchamp, Marseille. It was 1939 when he could afford to move to Paris. The family settled at 38 rue de Malte and Simon-Auguste started submitting his work to the Salon d'Automne, Salon des Peintres Témoins de Leur Temps, and other major exhibitions. At the outbreak of World War II, he was on holiday in Auvergne. In 1940, he was mobilized. Within two months he had to retreat to Ussel, forced by his ill health. In 1941 he reconverted a rented farm there into his atelier. Simon-Auguste returned to Paris after the Liberation in 1944, to take part for the first time in the Nationale with La Fillette aux Pommes. Up to 1947 Simon-Auguste signed his paintings with fountain pen ink. Afterwards, he used brush oil. He spent some Summer holidays in Villiers-sur-Morin in the late 1940s. In 1949 he traveled around Italy: Rome, Florence, Siena, San-Giminiano, Venice, Milan. In 1950 he was appointed member at the Salon d’Automne. This year he submitted Le Café du Commerce to the Grand Prix de la Peinture Contemporaine, at the Marsan Pavilion (Louvre Museum). He was amongst the 100 painters selected by the jury. Also in 1950 the city of Paris acquired his Marine de La Rochelle. The Musée du Château de Sceaux acquired Paysage de l'Ille-de-France. The French state acquired La Fillette à la lampe in 1952, Nature morte aux Bleuets in 1953, and Comme un Poisson dans l’Eau in 1955. In 1951 he contributed to an itinerant exhibition around Switzerland (Bern, Lausanne and Geneva) about Les fleurs et les fruits...

The Grape Seller - Workshop of Jacob Ochtervelt
The Grape Seller - Workshop of Jacob Ochtervelt

The Grape Seller - Workshop of Jacob Ochtervelt

Located in Stockholm, SE

Jacob Ochtervelt (Workshop) The Grape Seller oil on canvas unframed: 80.7 x 61 cm.; 31 ¾ x 24 in. framed: 109.5 x 89 cm.; 43 1/8 x 35 in. Essay: This captivating piece, originating from the studio of the revered Dutch artist Jacob Ochtervelt, mirrors the composition of a signed and dated 1669 canvas by Ochtervelt that is presently housed in the Hermitage museum. Its subject, "The Grape Seller" immerses us in a typical 17th-century interior, replete with characters from various strata of society. At the center, a fruit vendor is depicted bending over to weigh grapes for the buyer. A child hands some of the grapes to her mother to taste, their attentive maid standing by. The backdrop showcases typical Ochtervelt details: a hint of the city visible through the doorway, light filtering in through an overhead window, and a playful dog at their side. The exquisite quality of the piece is evident in the minutiae, such as the intricate detailing of the mother's earring, which in reality spans only a few millimeters yet boasts impressive attention to detail. Initially, Sotheby's considered this work to be an autograph piece by Ochtervelt. But due to some uncertainty, it was auctioned as Workshop of Jacob Ochtervelt. On the other hand, the esteemed Cabinet Turquin in Paris leans toward attributing the piece directly to Jacob Ochtervelt himself. The painting is framed in an authentic period frame, which has been delicately restored by Stockholm's Förgyllning och Bildhuggeri. The frame retains its age-old patina and, while in used condition, has minor imperfections adding to its charm. Another interesting thing worth to mention is the painting's provenance. It was once owned by the 1st Viscount Rothermere (1868-1940), the founder of the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror...
