Essay: Painted in 1770, this view of the environs of Caudebec presents the banks of the Seine as a setting for everyday activity within a carefully ordered landscape. A castle rises above the rocky cliffs at the left, while a weathered tree anchors the right foreground. Between them, boats lead the eye towards distant hills and a luminous horizon. Four figures gather beside baskets at the water’s edge, their red, blue and white clothing bringing concentrated accents of colour to the earth and vegetation. Above, broad clouds pass across an expansive blue sky, giving the scene much of its spaciousness and atmospheric movement. The composition follows Première vue des environs de Caudebec en Normandie, engraved by Yves-Marie Le Gouaz under the direction of Jacques Aliamet after Jacob Philipp Hackert. The Bibliothèque nationale de France catalogues the engraving with a publication date of 1769, suggesting that Horn’s painting followed its appearance within approximately a year. A closely corresponding painting by Hackert, signed and dated 1767 and sold at Lempertz in 2019, shows the arrangement in reverse. Horn follows the orientation of the engraving, with the tree at the right and the castle at the left. This reversal provides strong visual evidence for the print’s role as intermediary. The relatively taller proportions of his canvas and his choices of colour for the figures’ clothing give the painted version a distinct character. The accompanying impression preserves the dedication to Count Creutz, Sweden’s representative at the French court, together with his coat of arms. This detail gives the French landscape a specific Swedish connection. Hackert himself had visited Stockholm in 1764 and worked for the royal court before moving to France. These associations place Horn’s choice of model within a wider exchange of landscape imagery between France and Sweden. A count, military officer and councillor of state, Horn combined painting with a prominent role in Swedish public life. The painting is specifically identified on the reverse as “Font de Volta – Montmell – 1965”. The Font del Montmell is located in the recreational area of La Joncosa del Montmell, a mountainous landscape in southern Catalonia traditionally associated with the walking route known as the Volta al Montmell. Gimbert presents the landscape through an intensely Mediterranean palette of emerald greens, turquoise blues, ochres and luminous whites. The composition opens from a secluded foreground garden bordered by stone walls and dense vegetation toward the monumental mountain range beyond. A large tree rising at the right edge acts almost as a natural architectural element, framing the view and creating a powerful sense of depth. The handling of the paint is especially attractive. Areas of broad, vigorous brushwork alternate with thicker passages of impasto, particularly across the mountains, vegetation and cloudy sky. Rather than describing every detail literally, Gimbert builds the landscape through colour, texture and light, giving the scene a distinctly modern and expressive character. Painted in 1965, only four years before the artist’s death, the work belongs to Gimbert’s late period and shows the confidence of a painter deeply familiar with the Catalan countryside. El Montmell was not an isolated subject in his production. Other documented works by the artist depict the same area, confirming its importance within his landscape painting. The combination of identifiable location, original reverse inscription, strong Mediterranean character and substantial 60 x 73 cm format makes this a particularly representative example of mid-20th-century Catalan landscape painting. Biography Mossèn Ramon Gimbert Canals was born in Sant Quirze del Vallès on 25 May 1882 and died in Barcelona on 31 July 1969. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1908 while simultaneously developing a sustained career as a painter. These biographical dates are recorded by the Arxiu Diocesà de Barcelona. His artistic production concentrated principally on landscape, especially views of Catalonia, rural architecture, gardens, mountain scenery and coastal subjects. El Montmell appears repeatedly among his known works, alongside subjects including Horta, Camprodon and maritime scenes. Gimbert participated actively in the Barcelona art world. His most significant documented exhibition was a solo presentation at the prestigious Galeries Laietanes in Barcelona from 28 December 1935 to 10 January 1936. The exhibition is recorded in the Institut d’Estudis Catalans repertory of individual art exhibitions in Catalonia and included a catalogue listing the exhibited works and their prices. His paintings belong to the broader tradition of 20th-century Catalan landscape painting, combining naturalistic observation with increasingly free brushwork, expressive colour and a distinctly Mediterranean sensitivity to light. Artistic Inspiration The work belongs to the rich tradition of Catalan modern landscape painting developed from the late 19th century onward. Its expressive treatment of colour and vegetation recalls the Mediterranean landscapes of Joaquim Mir, while its luminous atmosphere and direct observation of nature can also be related to painters such as Eliseu Meifrèn, Santiago Rusiñol and Joaquim Sunyer. Rather than suggesting direct stylistic dependence, these comparisons place Gimbert within the wider Catalan and Spanish tradition in which landscape became a vehicle for colour, atmosphere and personal expression. The painting is unsigned on the front. An old handwritten inscription on the upper stretcher identifies the artist as Steinbach and appears to include the words “in München” (Munich). The artist’s precise identity remains to be established, and the work is therefore catalogued conservatively under the name Steinbach. This atmospheric 19th-century painting depicts two roe deer fleeing across a wintry landscape, closely followed by a hound. The movement of the animals brings a vivid narrative quality to the scene: a young buck, recognizable by his small antlers, turns alertly as he runs beside a second deer, while the pursuing dog emerges from the snowy terrain behind them. The artist combines careful observation of wildlife with a sensitive treatment of the surrounding landscape. Snow lightly covers the uneven ground and branches of the tall fir trees, while the distant woodland gradually dissolves into the misty horizon. Above, a softly illuminated sky in subtle shades of grey, pale gold and rose creates a striking contrast with the darker forest. Essay: This atmospheric evening seascape was painted in 1918 by an as yet unidentified artist and closely follows Amaldus Nielsen’s Aften ved Fredrikstad of 1909. The relationship between the two compositions is unmistakable. In both, a sailing boat occupies the central waters beneath an expansive and dramatically clouded sky, while a narrow strip of intense evening light separates sea from horizon. Smaller vessels recede into the distance, establishing both scale and a sense of stillness across the broad surface of the water. The present painting is nevertheless not a mechanical copy. The unidentified artist has altered several details and developed the scene through a more concentrated and chromatically intense palette. The central vessel is brought into sharper prominence, its sails forming a strong silhouette against the illuminated horizon. Deep blues dominate the foreground water and the upper sky, while streaks of orange, ochre and pale turquoise register the last light of sunset. The sky occupies approximately two thirds of the composition and becomes almost a subject in itself. Heavy clouds gather above the tranquil water, their dark masses opening intermittently to reveal passages of luminous blue and warm reflected light. The model for the composition was created by Amaldus Nielsen, one of the most important Norwegian painters of the coast during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born at Halse near Mandal in 1838, Nielsen studied in Copenhagen before continuing his training with Hans Gude at the Düsseldorf Academy. Gude’s emphasis on close observation of landscape remained fundamental to Nielsen, but he gradually moved away from the constructed romantic landscape towards an increasingly direct study of nature. Nielsen became especially associated with the coastlines of southern and western Norway and has often been described as one of Norway’s earliest naturalist landscape painters. From the 1860s onward he frequently completed paintings outdoors before the motif, an unusually direct working method in Norwegian art of the period. Light, weather and changing atmospheric conditions became central to his practice. The same location might be returned to repeatedly under different conditions of morning, evening, mist or changing weather. Fredrikstad and its surrounding archipelago formed part of this geography. Nielsen is documented working at Arisholmen near Fredrikstad as early as 1884, and surviving paintings demonstrate his continued interest in the coastal landscape of Østfold.
