Alexandra Rutsch Brock, Eden, 2020, gouache, thread, 8 x 15 in

By Alexandra Rutsch Brock

Located in Darien, CT

These new small-scale paintings were created using gouache on handmade paper. Alexandra Rutsch Brock then “drew” with a sewing machine using various colored threads. Using the thread as a painted line, playing with the marks and motifs the machine allows that creates contrast in both surface and color. They are sewn directly with no preliminary sketches, just instinctive gesture, sometimes in a similar color to enhance a texture, other times contrasting as a new element. The entangled threads that dangle down emphasize the materiality. Working so closely to the surface, she is aware of the senses of seeing, breathing, touching and feeling……………escaping into these new surfaces. Alexandra Rutsch Brock has exhibited in solo and group shows most recently at The Keck School at USC, CA, The Painting Center, NY, Village West Gallery, NJ and Misericordia University, PA. Her work has been featured in Studio Visit Magazine SV Vol44. Her recent co-curations include “HyperAccumulators” with Elizabeth Saperstein at Pelham Art Center, NY and “Among Friends” project with artists Patricia Fabricant and Beth Dary...

Surrealist Encaustic Painting, "Les Enfant D’Espoir Résilient"

By Tiffany Bociek

Located in San Diego, CA

This is a one of a kind original surrealist figurative encaustic wax painting by San Diego artist, Tiffany Bociek. It's dimensions are 9"x9"x1.75". It comes framed. A certificate of authenticity will follow delivery. Artist Statement: In this piece, I wanted to create an environment that on the surface looks lovely: the colors are pretty, and the shapes feel inviting. This piece should give the viewer a sense of peace or hope. But I was also looking to explore an unarticulated sense of fear. The children head to a horizon of nothing. There are no trees, buildings, or any recognizable object. In fact, they are heading to unknown. The unknown can be our greatest fear. The fear of not knowing what is ahead of us can be debilitating, this type of fear can pull you back, keep you where you are. This type of fear can say to you: “It’s a scary world out there, better just stay where you are”. Instead of listening to the fear, these children represent the hope that it takes to continue to move forward relentlessly and resiliently. They are the part of us that represents the courage it takes to do thing in spite of pain, suffering, shame, or guilt. It takes courage...

DORMANT by Heather Hartman, made for her show "Kudzu Season," is one of a series of four paintings representing the four seasons relative to the Kudzu growth cycle. This painting, titled "Dormant," is the Winter-inspired piece in the series. After the first frost of winter, all of the leaves of the kudzu plant fall off of the vine, leaving it limp and bare. Here, we see the stark outline of a kudzu vine...

WATER AND LIGHT (THE THIEF) - Rainbow, Spring Nature Painting of Kudzu Vine

By Heather Hartman

Located in Signal Mountain, TN

WATER AND LIGHT (THE THIEF) by Heather Hartman, made for her show "Kudzu Season," is one of a series of four paintings representing the four seasons relative to the Kudzu growth cycle. "Water and Light" is the spring-inspired painting of this seasonal series. During the spring, the kudzu plant begins to awaken from its winter dormancy. The predominantly light blue/sage green atmosphere of this painting gives way to the vibrant curve of a rainbow on the right-hand side of the painting. The leaves of a tree in the background give us the sense that plant life is beginning to flourish. The silhouette of a bare kudzu vine...

In this painting by Heather Hartman, lateral stripes of glossy metallic bronze are overlaid on a blue-grey painting featuring shadows of leaves in the descending sun. Bend 14 (Abstract Painting) Acrylic, graphite and thread on canvas - Unframed The threaded lines suggest a physical barrier that interrupts the shapes and stops them from connecting and at the same time a transparency is created that allows the viewer to enter through the lines onto the painted surface. The titles of each series can be interpreted as emotional, psychological and physical conditions. This work from the series called Bend is a zig zag fragmented shape with a stitched edge that amplifies its 3 dimensional aspect. The optical effect is sculptural. There is a constant play between drawing, painting and sculpture. The painting has a dynamic energy and yet simultaneously convey a quiet poetry. Holly Miller is an American abstract artist whose paintings strive to merge the optical with the tactile through the language of abstraction. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Communication through the touch (body language) has inspired her tactile abstract paintings. Miller's palette echoes the tones and hues of Italian industrial design from the 60's and 70's, while her shapes recall architecture and urban structures. Her work has a huge affinity to Fontana's physical approach to his paintings and Burri's tactile manipulation of the painting's surface. Ellsworth Kelly's bold shapes and colors have resonated with her on a purely optical level. Agnes Martin’s subtle, quiet, repetitive drawn lines, Fred Sandback’s strong architectural, minimal fiber lines drawn in space, Eva Hesse’s emotionally loaded structured webs, Richard Tuttle’s quirky and fresh drawings and humble objects, Bridget Riley's dynamic, optical compositions have left a deep impression on Miller inspiring her to carve out her own voice in Abstraction. By combining repeated threaded lines with geometric shapes of color, her work conveys many dichotomies: reductive painting and craft, illusion and material, warm and cool, absence and presence, masculine and feminine, bold and subtle, perfection and imperfection... The paintings have a physicality that is described through the monochromatic brush strokes and the punctured holes of the drawn lines that pierce the surface of the canvas, yet from a distance, they appear to be flat and suggest a fine line drawing...
