Post-Impressionist Paintings

POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE

In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.

The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.

The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.

The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

Ibiza Children in White Village Mediterranean Figurative Oil Painting Spain

By Ignacio Gil Sala

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Ibiza Children in White Village Mediterranean Figurative Oil Painting Spain Artist: Ignacio Gil Sala (Barcelona, 1913–2003) Title: Traditional Ibizan Scene with Children Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 60 × 73 cm (23.6 × 28.7 in) Signature: Signed lower right Date: circa 1960s Condition: Very good original condition with visible impasto brushwork Frame: Unframed Provenance: Private collection Spain DESCRIPTION Expressive Mediterranean figurative oil painting depicting children and women in a traditional whitewashed Ibizan village setting by Spanish post-Impressionist painter Ignacio Gil Sala. This composition belongs to the artist’s celebrated Ibiza cycle, widely considered the most recognizable and desirable body of his work. The scene captures the luminous atmosphere of Balearic daily life through confident impasto brushwork and vibrant structural color patches characteristic of mid-century Mediterranean painting. Particularly notable is the treatment of the children’s faces, constructed with dense chromatic strokes that create a strong sense of immediacy and psychological presence. The architecture, rendered in layered whites and violet shadows, reflects the intense island light that defines Gil Sala’s mature Ibiza production. Works featuring traditional Ibizan figures remain among the most collected subjects within the artist’s oeuvre, especially in medium-to-large decorative formats such as the present example. A highly atmospheric and authentic representation of Mediterranean village life. Signed lower right. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Ignacio Gil Sala (Barcelona, 1913–2003) was a Spanish painter associated with the Mediterranean post-Impressionist tradition of the twentieth century. He trained at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona under the guidance of Félix Mestres and Vicente Borrás and developed a career focused primarily on luminous landscapes and traditional figurative scenes of Ibiza, Mallorca and southern Spain. Following the Spanish Civil War, Ibiza became one of the central subjects of his artistic production. The island’s white architecture, traditional costumes and intense Mediterranean light provided the visual structure for many of his most recognizable compositions. Works from his Ibiza period are considered the most characteristic and desirable within his oeuvre and are especially appreciated for their atmospheric brushwork and chromatic construction. Gil Sala exhibited internationally across Europe and the Americas, and today his Mediterranean scenes remain widely collected as part of the twentieth-century Spanish figurative painting tradition. His work stands within the lineage of painters who explored Mediterranean light through color structure and expressive brushwork alongside Joaquín Sorolla, Hermen Anglada-Camarasa and Eliseu Meifrèn. ARTIST CONTEXT / INSPIRATION The luminous Mediterranean palette connects Ignacio Gil Sala with the tradition of Joaquín Sorolla’s coastal figuration and the Balearic chromatic research developed by Hermen Anglada-Camarasa during his Mallorca period. His structured brushwork and atmospheric construction also relate to the post-Impressionist landscape language of Eliseu Meifrèn and the broader European Mediterranean painting tradition collected internationally throughout the twentieth century. "Interieur aux Fleurs Jaunes" 20th Century Oil on Canvas by Emilio Grau Sala

By Emilio Grau Sala

Located in Madrid, ES

EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 INTERIEUR AUX FLEURS JAUNES signed "Grau Sala" (lower left) signed again, located, dated and titled "Grau Sala, Paris 61, Interieur aux fleurs jaunes" (on the reverse) oil on canvas 15 x 18-1/4 inches (38 x 46 cm.) framed: 23-1/2 x 26-1/2 (59.5 x 67 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Parisian Collection Interieur aux fleurs jaunes This interior with two female figures where also the plans made in different colors are drawing the composition. The abundant pictorial material distributed in geometric portions, gives life to the tablecloth and mother and daughter figures, in black and white colors of the jacket, while the black line takes care of the environments so as not to separate them. The fruit bowl and flowers give a cheerful touch with their pastel tones. Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in "Sala Parés", Barcelona. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents. In the years 1930-33 he had painted under the influence of Cubism, especially that of Torres García. It is from that time a painting of the port of Barcelona, geometric and structural, which completely anticipated what would later be his work. His personality began fully painting watercolors and oils with a certain fantasy character, with a point of decorative instinct and themes full of naivety and grace. Romantic interiors, paddocks, port scenes, sailors, etc. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. Mediterranean because his work has the color and light of that land. He understood and assimilated impressionist painting very well, and for that reason he was never subject to the modules of a formulist realism, nor the sexigencias of the forms. In Paris he found the best environment to give us a fruitful and intense work, because he could use the expressive potential of French art to enrich it. All this made him a very esteemed artist everywhere where his work was known. He was also very often required to illustrate books and publications in Paris. Also his posters were very successful. He painted a large number of subjects, but perhaps the theme of horse racing is where you can see in a very clear way the joyful and optimistic life that was lived at that time. In this fabric there is an explosion of juicy and vivid colors full of ingenuity and simplicity in its composition. Only a teacher could turn the complicated into something simple and beautiful. Before this work we feel a deep emotion, the emotion of before starting a horse race. Joy and nervousness at the same time. Especially since it is a direct emotion. There are no intermediaries between our eyes and what the work intends to tell us. This is precisely what seduces and catches us of this painting. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum...

Aoum II by Auguste Herbin

Aoum II by Auguste Herbin

By Auguste Herbin

Located in New Orleans, LA

Auguste Herbin 1882-1960 French Aoum II Signed and dated 'herbin 1944' (lower right); titled "aoum" 2 (lower left) Oil on canvas This bold and vivid abstract oil on canvas was painted by French painter Auguste Herbin, a pioneer in popularizing Modernist abstraction. Over his expansive nearly 60-year career, Herbin rubbed shoulders with art history greats from Pablo Picasso to Georges Braque before honing his personal and innovative style. Entitled Aoum II, the painting stands apart for its daring color palette and crisp composition. Painted in 1944, Aoum II embodies Herbin’s fully-formed artistic aesthetic and stylistic tenets. Only two years prior to its creation, Herbin developed his “alphabet plastique,” a synergistic visual language of color and form that he described in detail in his published book L’art non-figuratif non-objectif. Though the artist was highly cerebral in his process of creating art, one does not need to perfectly understand his principles to feel Aoum II's magnetism. The geometric shapes visible in the composition — primarily fragmented triangles and circles — are rendered in bold pinks, blues and yellows on a deep black background. His tiered application of color creates a natural three-register visual effect as if to tell a story from the apex of the form to its denouement. Auguste Herbin began his artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lille before moving to Paris in 1901. In the early years of his career, he experimented with a variety of styles, exhibiting Post-Impressionistic works at the Salon des Indépendants in 1906 and Fauvist paintings at the Salon d'Automne in 1907. After a brief Cubist period following his introduction to Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Otto...
