In his studio, with large skylights, Rutger Hiemstra works on various subjects: still-lifes, portraits and, for example, large cloudy skies. In addition, he can also be found outside regularly, to make small 'plein-air' paintings. A few hours of sitting outside and painting a beautiful painting about it, that 'can not be better', according to Hiemstra. Rutger worked in Denmark, Switzerland, France and England, he also likes working in his own environment and is easily inspired by simple and daily 'things'. For a child, Easter eggs are sensational. To begin with, they are bigger, if you are smaller. They have a nice shape: just not round. They shine and come in festive colors. And if you wipe off the wrapper there is no real egg, but chocolate. Later you are grown up and you know those things by now. Every year around Easter they are for sale with containers. They lie in front of the house and office. Easter egg? Yes Nice. But nothing special. Until you see them painted by Rutger Hiemstra (1975). He looks childishly at all those colorful glittering unround marbles - and he knows how to share his elation with it in a still life. Hiemstra makes Easter eggs unusual again, just as he also shows tompoucing, a glass of white wine or fresh mint, a pink cake...

Impressionistic landscape painting of the Hudson River during the wintertime in tones of grey, white, slate, blue, dark brown and green Oil on linen, 22 x 28 inches John Kelly approaches the Hudson Valley landscape with the eye of an architect and the hand of an impressionist. With intense attention paid to form and light, Kelly nevertheless manages to abstract the landscape just slightly, breaking earth, sky, and atmosphere down to their most elemental qualities. In this painting, a body of water, solidified into ice, stretches toward a murky treeline. The painting is composed primarily in a palette of pale blue, gray, and pink, with white, dark green, and gray accents. About the artist: Hudson Valley based painter John Kelly received his education from the Art Institute of Boston and Buffalo State. He has been exhibiting around the northeastern United States since the 1970s. Harry Leith-Ross (1886 - 1973) Fisherman of Yankee Cove Oil on canvasboard 8 1/8 x 10 1/2 inches Signed lower left; also with artist, title, and number '39' on label verso Provenance: Private Collection, Pennsylvania Landscape painter Harry Leith-Ross was born in Mauritius in 1886, a British possession in the Indian Ocean. He came to America as a seventeen year old. Before beginning, some ten years later in 1914, his studies at the Art Students League Summer School in Woodstock, New York at the relatively late age of twenty-eight, Leith-Ross had worked as a commercial artist. He studied with John F. Carlson and Birge Harrison at the League Summer School, and later with C. Y. Turner at the National Academy of Design in New York City. He then went to Paris, studying with Jean Paul Laurens at the Academie Julien and in England with Stanhope Forbes. Long associated with the Bucks County artists' colony in New Hope, Pennsylvania, Leith-Ross may have first gone there in 1912. It is definitely known that he visited the area in 1916 at the invitation of a student he had met when both attended the Art Students League Summer School in Woodstock, John Fulton Folinsbee. Birge Harrison, his former instructor at the League, whom he met again, was also there in New Hope during the winters from 1914 to 1916. The third and last generation of the New Hope colony would be comprised of artists like Leith-Ross, Folinsbee and Kenneth R. Nunamaker.
