Framed dimensions: 73.5 H x 2.25 D x 61.5 W inches Born in Michigan, Wakeham attended Meinzinger Art School, Detroit, and later earned degrees in painting from Michigan State University (1959) and Stanford University (1961). During this time, he also traveled and painted in Europe for two years, living the second year in Florence, Italy. A teacher, Wakeham taught drawing and painting at Stanford and art history and oil painting at College of San Mateo. He has conducted workshops, taught master classes, and juried exhibitions in California, Nevada, New Mexico, Hawaii, New York, Washington, D.C., and Ontario, Canada. An active member of the Pastel Society of America, he taught a workshop for the society (1997) and performed demonstrations (2001, 2004, 2005) and assisted in hanging “Pastels Only” each year since 1998. In 2000, Wakeham was elected to the Pastel Society of America's Hall of Fame in 2000 and, in 2009, named Pastel Society of the West Coast Pastel Laureate. In 1995 he was named Master Pastelist, PSA and Distinguished Pastelist, Pastel Society of the West Coast. The painting captures this brooding Highland landscape and the deep and dark waters of Loch Tay, one of the most stunning lochs in Scotland. Loch Tay is a magnificent dark stretch of water, 15 miles (24 km) long and around 508 ft deep. It’s the largest loch in Perthshire and one of the deepest in Scotland. To the north, the loch is flanked by the impressive bulk of the Ben Lawers mountain range, much of which is designated as a National Nature Reserve. The main A827 road runs high above the loch, west from Kenmore. The contours are gentler on the southern shore and Sustrans Cycle Route Number 7 runs along a quiet unclassified road. It's hard to believe that ancient settlers once lived on Loch Tay, inhabiting artificially created islands known as crannogs. There are eighteen crannogs on Loch Tay, most are now submerged but a large crannog near the northern shore at Kenmore can be clearly seen.
