Ian Hornak, Transparent Barricades: Sunrise and Moonrise, 1985

By Ian Hornak

Located in Fairfield, CT

Artist: Ian Hornak (1944–2002) Title: Transparent Barricades: Sunrise and Moonrise Year: 1985 Medium: Acrylic on canvas Size: 30 x 40 inches (76.2 x 101.6 cm) Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Inscription: Signed, dated, and titled by the artist, verso Provenance: Armstrong Gallery, New York, New York Notes: This exquisite acrylic painting by Ian Hornak (1944–2002), titled Transparent Barricades: Sunrise and Moonrise, was executed in 1985. The masterfully conceived composition exemplifies Hornak’s celebrated series of multiple-exposure landscape paintings, a body of work that transformed conventional landscape imagery into complex meditations on memory, perception, and the passage of time. Through the seamless fusion of distinct moments within a single visual field, Hornak creates a dreamlike yet convincing reality in which sunrise and moonrise coexist simultaneously, dissolving traditional boundaries between day and night, observation and recollection. The silhouetted tree forms, luminous celestial light, and brilliantly layered sky are rendered with extraordinary precision, producing an image that is at once visually breathtaking and intellectually engaging. By combining photographic realism with poetic invention, Hornak invites viewers to contemplate the fluid nature of time and experience, presenting multiple realities within a unified composition. Executed during a pivotal period in the artist’s career, the painting demonstrates Hornak’s remarkable ability to synthesize technical mastery, environmental observation, and metaphysical inquiry into a singular and unforgettable vision of the natural world. IAN HORNAK (1944–2002) was an American painter, draughtsman, printmaker, and pioneering force in Photorealism and Hyperrealism whose extraordinary technical mastery, visionary imagination, and innovative approach to realism established him as one of the most distinctive and original artists of the late twentieth century. Widely recognized as a founding member of both the Photorealist and Hyperrealist movements, Hornak helped redefine the possibilities of contemporary realism by combining photographic precision with symbolism, romanticism, mythology, environmental awareness, art historical references, and metaphysical inquiry, creating a body of work that stands apart within postwar American art for both its visual brilliance and intellectual ambition. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Michigan before establishing his career in New York and East Hampton, Hornak emerged during one of the most transformative periods in modern art and developed a highly individual visual language that transcended conventional artistic categories. While many of his contemporaries focused on strict photographic transcription, urban imagery, or detached observation, Hornak utilized realism as a foundation for exploring profound themes of memory, beauty, mortality, spirituality, environmental fragility, and humanity’s relationship with nature, producing works that operate simultaneously as visual spectacles and philosophical meditations. His artistic vision reflects an awareness of the revolutionary innovations introduced by Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, while simultaneously drawing inspiration from the Hudson River School, particularly Frederic Edwin Church, Martin Johnson Heade, Thomas Cole, and Albert Bierstadt, as well as the spiritual landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich and the botanical precision of Dutch Golden Age masters. Through this extraordinary synthesis of influences, Hornak created a visual language that united scientific observation, photographic realism, romantic grandeur, allegorical symbolism, and philosophical reflection into a form entirely his own. His highest recorded sale was achieved in 2017, when Large Orchid Bouquet (1988) was sold in a private transaction conducted in association with the heir of the Ian Hornak estate to the Van Andel family, co-owners of Amway, for US$165,000 ($219,168.11 USD, calculated for inflation in 2025). By Francis E. Jamieson

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

Sunset over the Loch by F. E. Jamieson (British 1895-1950) signed lower corner oil painting on canvas, unframed canvas: 16 x 24 inches Fine quality antique oil painting by the much admired and celebrated British artist F. E. Jamieson (1895-1950). The painting captures this beautifully romantic view of the Scottish Highlands, with an extensive view over the loch waters. F. E. Jamieson (1895-1950) We are extremely fortunate to have been handling the works of the enigmatic British artist, F. E. Jamieson since the year we began art dealing, 1989. Over this time, coupled with our love of the Scottish landscape, we have bought and sold many hundreds of his paintings, in all their various guises and subjects and are considered by many to be a leading authority on the artist and his work. We are also in the early stages of publishing the Catalogue Raisonne for this artist, of which this painting will be featured. Mr. Jamieson was largely a painter of Scottish landscapes and loch scenes. Born in 1895, Jamieson lived on the south coast of England and was contracted to a large department store to supply them with his paintings. He was an ambitious man and keen to sell more works than through just one shop. In order to do this, he started to sign his works with pseudonyms other than his own name, in order that he could sell his work to a wider audience. It worked and it is considered that Jamieson at least 15 different pseudonym names on his paintings. In addition to selling through furniture shops, Jamieson would travel door to door offering his paintings to housewives and private buyers. In our years of researching the artist, we heard one story related to us by an old customer who remembers that Jamieson started selling door...

Indians in a Canoe on Lake Tahoe with Snow Covered Mountains - 19th Century Oil

By William Weaver Armstrong

Located in Soquel, CA

Indians in a Canoe on Lake Tahoe with Snow Covered Mountains - 19th Century Oil Impressionistic rendering of Lake Tahoe by American landscape painter William Weaver Armstrong (b. 1862 d. 1906.) In the foreground, a lone Indian holding a rifle stands looking out over Lake Tahoe on a path surrounded by evergreens and other alpine brush; in the distance are Indians with Eagle feather head dresses (painted in red for effect) in a canoe traversing the Lake. The foliage and figure are rendered with visible and expressive brushstrokes, with vibrant orange and yellow highlights on the figure. Behind this piece of land is Lake Tahoe and the snow covered Sierra mountains in the distance. On the lake there is a canoe with four people sitting in it, their reflections visible on the water. The lake and mountains in the distance are rendered in a smoother style than the foreground, with more blended brushstrokes and colors. The sky is clear and painted a pale blue color with strong cyan tones. The Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California are the original, aboriginal people of the Lake Tahoe Basin, known as dáɁaw (the lake) to them, a land they've inhabited for millennia, expertly managing resources and using controlled burns for healthy forests before European settlement. They are organized into bands, including the Welmélti, páwalu, and huŋalélti, and their deep spiritual and cultural connection to the lake. Signed "W. W. Armstrong" in bottom right corner. Titled "Lake Taho Cal" by the artist on stretcher bars. Canvas size: 30" H x 50" W William Weaver Armstrong was born in Ontario, New York in 1862, during the first year of the American Civil War. His father was also a painter and taught him as a child. When Armstrong was 12 years old, his family moved west and eventually settled in Oakland, California. He was raised in Oakland and eventually became a painter based out of the city, being listed so by the Oakland City Directory in 1887. He made frequent trips around California, painting the landscape from Santa Cruz to the Northern border with Oregon. He also owned a carriage painting...

Landscape Paintings for Sale on 1stDibs

Shopping for landscape paintings? An expansive landscape can help open up a small space in your home, while in a large living room, a work of this kind can help introduce a relaxing atmosphere as you interact with guests.

It could be argued that cave walls were the canvases for the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict and elevate natural scenery through art, but there is a richer history to consider.

The Netherlands was home to landscapes as a major theme in painting as early as the 1500s, and ink-on-silk paintings in China featured mountains and large bodies of water as far back as the third century. Greeks created vast wall paintings that depicted landscapes and grandiose garden scenes, while in the late 15th century and early 16th century, landscapes were increasingly the subject of watercolor works by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo.

The popularity of religious paintings eventually declined altogether, and by the early 19th century, painters of classical landscapes took to painting out-of-doors (plein-air painting). Paintings of natural scenery were increasingly realistic but romanticized too. Into the 20th century, landscapes remained a major theme for many artists, and while the term “landscape painting” may call to mind images of lush, grassy fields and open seascapes, the genre is characterized by more variety, colors and diverse styles than you may think. Painters working in the photorealist style of landscape painting, for example, seek to create works so lifelike that you may confuse their paint for camera pixels. But if you’re shopping for art to outfit an important room, the work needs to be something with a bit of gravitas (and the right frame is important, too).

Adding a landscape painting to your home can introduce peace and serenity within the confines of your own space. (Some may think of it as an aspirational window of sorts rather than a canvas.) Abstract landscape paintings by the likes of Korean painter Seungyoon Choi or Georgia-based artist Katherine Sandoz, on the other hand, bring pops of color and movement into a room. These landscapes refuse to serve as a background. Elsewhere, Adam Straus’s technology-inspired paintings highlight how our extreme involvement with our devices has removed us from the glory of the world around us. Influenced by modern life and steeped in social commentary, Straus’s landscape paintings make us see our surroundings anew.

Whether you’re seeking works by the world’s most notable names or those authored by underground legends, find a vast collection of landscape paintings on 1stDibs.
