Artist Commentary: This painting of a Cape Cod house is made of 468 little paper squares that I pasted on the canvas. The window, flowers, and bushes were then added with oil paint. My friends and family say that gluing together hundreds of little squares together is slightly obsessional, but I think it actually demonstrates great patience! I love to lose myself into creating and pasting these repeating patterns. Then, I disrupt them with a disconnected and more loose painting on top. But as a whole, both parts are in fact united and harmonious, as they belong to the same Cape Cod house. This is how I feel about myself: one person with two very different cultures. From the outside, they can look quite disconnected, but they actually are not. In fact, I find that I unite both cultures by painting them. What about you? Artist’s Statement The Realm of Imaginary Mystery continues the narrative approach I have been experimenting with, with much of the linguistic expression coming from elements of mature Tibetan wall paintings. Narrative in painting is something that Western modern art and Chinese literati painting have strongly rejected, but I believe that it is precisely the way in which traditional Tibetan art is expressed. It is also the native language system that I have always been searching for. It is not defunct, it has just not been activated to connect to the contemporary context. Unlike the traditional narrative, my narrative is scattered and fragmented. Like the chaos of the times. This work was painted during the epidemic, which made me experience the uncertainty of world affairs and the impermanence of life. The word "vague and confused" is actually a homophone of "Sumi". The reason why I use "vague and confused" instead of "Sumi" is that I think "vague and confused" is more suitable for the world we live in, which is unreal and confusing. It is in the virtual that we gain knowledge, produce and record history. Perhaps when historians study our generation in 2,000 years' time, the internet will be the great transparent medium in which trivial or significant records of the virtual world will be recorded, like a phantom suspended over this era. When a thing is erased from the virtual world, that is perhaps its demise in the historical sense. Perhaps the world we live in, the dreams we hold on to and the art we create are, from the beginning, just a phantom of illusion. Best known for his eclectic range, his canvases are formal abstractions that use a variety of processes to experiment with surface—creating striations, cracks, marks and blurs at times juxtaposed with hard-edge geometric abstraction. As he described, “Painting is like discovery, trying this, trying that, bending this, twirling that, and then, every once in a while, it goes bing!” As a young man, Moses joined the military during World War II as a Navy Medical Corps surgical technician and discovered an aptitude for treating injuries. After his tour ended, he enrolled in Long Beach City College's pre-med program with the intent of becoming a doctor. After a painting course with Pedro Miller, Moses switched his major to art. He then went on to study at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he would receive both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. While enrolled in his master’s program, fellow artist Craig Kauffman introduced Moses to Walter Hopps, future owner of the influential Ferus Gallery. Though he’d been exhibiting since 1949, Moses first showed at Ferus in 1958—while still enrolled at UCLA—and quickly became part of the “Cool School” with artists Robert Irwin, Larry Bell, Ed Ruscha, John Altoon, and others. Following graduation, Moses moved to New York City where he became friends with Franz Kline, Milton Resnick, William de Kooning, and Mark Rothko, with whom he would exhibit in New York, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere. In 1959, Moses married Avilda Peters and moved back to Los Angeles to start a family, travel, and continue his painting career. Always working with process and experimenting with materials as a painter, Moses was critically lauded for his bold composition and innovation. In 1968, he received a Tamarind Lithography Fellowship as well as the offer of a teaching position at the University of California, Los Angeles, his alma mater, where he would teach until 1972. After travels in Europe, he would return to UCLA to teach until 1976, the same year he was recognized with a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant and his first museum shows: a show of drawings from 1958-1970s at the Wight Gallery at UCLA, and a show of new abstract and cubist red paintings at LACMA curated by Stephanie Barron, the latter marking a transitional moment in his career. While drawing was prominent in his work in the 1960s and early 70s, by the mid-70s, Moses was turning increasingly to painting.
