ABOUT THIS PIECE: My first job out of school was on a trading floor playing a never ending game of probabilities. Days and nights filled with nodes, signals, decision trees, path-dependent outcomes and calculated probabilities in every flavor I could never have imagined. I spent eight years of my life in a two-block radius around 52nd and Park working on the kind of hopeless problems nobody in history had ever successfully solved; instead of helping me understand the world better like I thought I would in my naivete, my time there instead taught me the romance of the idea that some things are more beautiful if left never understood. That there was a peace in understanding there would be no answer. This series of surfer “movement studies” is a playful reminiscence of this part of my past, an ode to a formative period of my life overlaid on my San Diegan coastal upbringing. There are few things I have experienced in my life that are as pure and total in its disconnection with the world as sitting on a bar of foam on the great rippled plane of our oceans. It is my career’s antithesis. This humorous, almost interactive scribbling of pseudo-mathematical lines and nodes laying out all the nameless surfer’s possibilities represents this tension that continues to define me. They also serve as a renewable source of food, fiber, and fuel, as well as a focus of spiritual life. But now, suddenly, the largest baobabs are dying off , literally collapsing under their own weight. Scientists believe these ancient giants are being dehydrated by drought and higher temperatures, likely the result of climate change. Photographer Beth Moon, already responsible for some of the most indelible images of Africa’s oldest and largest baobabs, has undertaken a new photographic pilgrimage to bear witness to this environmental catastrophe and document the baobabs that still survive. In this oversize volume, she presents breathtaking new duotone tree portraits of the baobabs of Madagascar, Senegal, and South Africa. She also recounts her eventful journey to visit these fantastic trees in a moving diaristic text studded with color travel photos.

Mangelsen (American, b. 1945) has traveled throughout the natural world for over 40 years observing and photographing the Earth’s last great wild places. A Nebraska native, Mangelsen’s love of nature, his life outdoors and business success were heavily influenced by his father. An avid sportsman, Harold Mangelsen took his sons to favorite blinds along the Platte River in Nebraska to observe the great flocks of ducks, geese and cranes that migrate through the valley. From these adventures, Mangelsen learned important lessons for photographing in the field, most notably patience and understanding animal behavior. In 1965, Mangelsen began studying business at the University of Nebraska. In 1967, Tom transferred to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, where he changed his major and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Tom continued postgraduate study in zoology and wildlife biology at the University of Nebraska and Colorado State University. In 1970 Mangelsen moved to Nederland, Colorado. He spent two years living in the Rocky Mountains in an old mining shack without electricity or running water with his English setter, black lab and raccoon. Tom continued to work on his photography and studied arctic alpine ecology at the University of Colorado’s Mountain Research Station near Nederland.
