Poolside Secrets, Estate Edition, Slim Aarons Palm Beach Collection

By Slim Aarons

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Flo Smith (left) and Lily Pulitzer share a secret at a pool party, Palm Beach, Florida, April 1961. Description and alt text: In this classic image of midcentury poolside glamour, two suntanned white women share a moment by the sparkling blue and green reflective swimming pool. Flo Smith wears a breezy straw hat and sailor striped top with white shorts, and Lily Pulitzer wears a mod Grecian vase print and coral pants, and a vibrant pink kerchief. The figures in the foreground are in crisp detail, and the lush background of palm trees and cool blue sky is in soft focus. There is a beautiful contrast between the soft-focus background foliage and its graphic, bright reflection in the pool in the middle ground. Flo holds a white bag and her nails are painted red, echoing the trim of her hat. Pulitzer wears a jade bracelet, echoing the jade of the pool and her top, and her nails are natural. A blue cabana can be seen in the background. Flo holds an arm around Lily's waist, and Lily lightly tips the corner of Flo's hat. This is a perfect image for a collector of classic photography, midcentury glamour, or iconic friendship. Color chips for complementary decorative shades of soft red, deep pink, delft blue (sky), and jade greens (pool, palms and poolside foliage) can be seen in slideshow. An active architecture photographer since 1985, is a master of perspectives and precise spatial compositions, and he thus considers classical sculpture, in all of its possible facets, a special challenge. "Görner’s photographs sometimes open the doors to another world and take the viewer with them on a journey through time. Here the palace is no longer a museum but both royal residence and a site steeped in history. The viewer does not have to share the halls with the masses of visitors; instead the images offer him exclusive impressions of the Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors) and the Galerie des Batailles (Hall of Battles) as even the king of France was probably never granted. The halls are empty of people, yet they seem to be able to unfurl their individual characters of their own accord. These places practically breathe history, and this aspect is also part of the essence captured in the photographs. King Wilhelm of Prussia was named German Emperor Wilhelm I in the Hall of Mirrors after France was defeated in 1870–1871 in the Franco-German War. The Treaty of Versailles following World War I was also signed there in 1919. In this sense, the architectural photographs of Versailles’s ceremonial rooms have an edge on Renaissance paintings; here even a sense of world history arises within the viewer – one which continues to exert an influence today". Slim Aarons: Tiger Morse (Slim Aarons Estate Edition)

By Slim Aarons

Located in Los Angeles, CA

Tiger Morse sits in her shop, 'A la Carte' in New York, 1964. Andy Warhol star and fashion designer Joan "Tiger" Morse is pictured here with her signature black lace and a feathered mask, with a cigarette and long holder. She was a regular at Max's Kansas City, a society girl turned radical designer and creative dropout. She frequently lied about her past, and her biography remains a bit mysterious. She has been called “La Passionaria of the dropout subculture.” She would say, “I work all day and I swing all night." Her celebrity clients ran the gamut from Jackie Kennedy to Frank Zappa. She was known for only using manmade materials, including vinyl, Mylar, sequins, and electric lights. Her pop designs include the Love / Hate dress, which said "Love" on the front and "Hate" on the back. Tiger was in two Andy Warhol factory films, Tiger Morse, 1967 and **** (Four Stars). She was the subject of Tiger Morse, while **** also featured Tiger, Edie Sedgwick, Nico, and Ultra Violet. Her designs can be seen on the cover of the "We're Only In It For The Money" album, which parodies The Beatles Sargent...
