Saul Rabino (1892-1969)Best known for his paintings and drawings of Jewish culture, Saul Rabino was a Russian-bornartist who spent most of his life in Los Angeles. Born Saul Rabinowitz in 1892 in Odessa, Russia,Rabino studied art at the Russian Imperial Art School. During a brief stay in Paris, he continued hiseducation at the École des Arts Decoratifs. After mastering techniques in painting, sculpture, andlithography, Rabino moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a WPA printmaker during the1930s. He stayed in Los Angeles for the rest of his life, making work about political turmoil and theJewish community. During the 1940s, he drew allegorical images of war and the plight of Jewsin Eastern Europe. These political works, usually drawings or prints, are dramatic, symbolic, andemotionally rousing. He also made art portraying the scholars and religious leaders of the Jewishcommunity, including portraits that are more delicate than his political pieces and express anobvious admiration for the leaders of his community. Before he died in 1969, Rabino exhibitedat the World’s Fair New York in 1939, the Los Angeles Museum Historical Society of Art, and theLaguna Beach Art Society. The mid-eighties saw new levels of abstraction in Hodgkin’s work, building exuberantly off the ambiguous spaces of his earlier work. The artist used six colors of paint, producing a unique depth and texture to each print in this edition.
Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in DH in Hollywood at Petersburg Press, where he was a long-time collaborator. Soft-ground etching allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, giving his prints the characteristic black brushstrokes seen in this print.

L’Ecuyer (The Squire) is an engraving made by the Parisian artist Louis-Marin Bonnet, realized in the second half of 1700 in Paris.
Inside the matrix, the title is engraved on the lower center, whilst “L. Bonnet direx” is engraved on the lower right. The state of preservation is somewhat good, except for fungal foxing spread on the sides of the figure and some small stains, one of which is more evident on the lower center of the image. The right margin of the paper is fringed with tiny tears.
Louis-Marin Bonnet lived from 1736 to 1793 in Paris. He was a painter and engraver, and as such he invented one of the first color-printing methods with many matrices, with a pastel-like effect. In 1769, he published a treatise titled Le Pastel en gravure inventé, et execute par Louis Bonnet...

Le Petit Maitre (The Small Master) is an engraving made by the Parisian artist Louis-Marin Bonnet and realized in the second half of 1700 in Paris.
Inside the matrix, the title is engraved on the lower center, whilst “A Paris, chez Bonnet rue St. Jacques” appears on the lower right. The state of preservation is somewhat good, except for fungal foxing spread on the left margin and some stains, of which one is more visible on the higher left of the image. The higher, lower, and left margins are fringed and present tiny tears.
