Saul Rabino (1892-1969)Best known for his paintings and drawings of Jewish culture, Saul Rabino was a Russian-bornartist who spent most of his life in Los Angeles. Born Saul Rabinowitz in 1892 in Odessa, Russia,Rabino studied art at the Russian Imperial Art School. During a brief stay in Paris, he continued hiseducation at the École des Arts Decoratifs. After mastering techniques in painting, sculpture, andlithography, Rabino moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a WPA printmaker during the1930s. He stayed in Los Angeles for the rest of his life, making work about political turmoil and theJewish community. L’Ecuyer (The Squire) is an engraving made by the Parisian artist Louis-Marin Bonnet, realized in the second half of 1700 in Paris.
Inside the matrix, the title is engraved on the lower center, whilst “L. Bonnet direx” is engraved on the lower right. The state of preservation is somewhat good, except for fungal foxing spread on the sides of the figure and some small stains, one of which is more evident on the lower center of the image. The right margin of the paper is fringed with tiny tears.

The present work is a pencil signed and numbered daguerreotype that is part of the 2001 “Doctors of the World” series. Close has said “I’m not interested in daguerreotypes because it’s an antiquarian process, I like them because from my point of view, photography never got any better than it was in 1840… Photographs are often so big now that twenty or thirty people can view one at the same time, but a daguerreotype is the most intimate image made with a camera, because it is small and only one person can look at it.”

This is one of Richard Pettibone's most iconic, popular and desirable prints done in 1970 - during the most influential era of the Pop Art movement. This homage to Andy Warhol, Frank Stella and Roy Lichtenstein exemplifies the type of artistic appropriation he was engaging in early on during the height of the Pop Art movement - long before more contemporary artists like Deborah Kass, Louise Lawler, etc. followed suit.
