Post-Impressionist Art

POSTIMPRESSIONIST STYLE

In the revolutionary wake of Impressionism, artists like Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin advanced the style further while firmly rejecting its limitations. Although the artists now associated with Postimpressionist art did not work as part of a group, they collectively employed an approach to expressing moments in time that was even more abstract than that of the Impressionists, and they shared an interest in moving away from naturalistic depictions to more subjective uses of vivid colors and light in their paintings.

The eighth and final Impressionist exhibition was held in Paris in 1886, and Postimpressionism — also spelled Post-Impressionism — is usually dated between then and 1905. The term “Postimpressionism” was coined by British curator and art critic Roger Fry in 1910 at the “Manet and the Postimpressionists” exhibition in London that connected their practices to the pioneering modernist art of Édouard Manet. Many Postimpressionist artists — most of whom lived in France — utilized thickly applied, vibrant pigments that emphasized the brushstrokes on the canvas.

The Postimpressionist movement’s iconic works of art include van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889) and Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884). Seurat’s approach reflected the experimental spirit of Postimpressionism, as he used Pointillist dots of color that were mixed by the eye of the viewer rather than the hand of the artist. Van Gogh, meanwhile, often based his paintings on observation, yet instilled them with an emotional and personal perspective in which colors and forms did not mirror reality. Alongside Mary Cassatt, Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Gauguin, the Dutch painter was a pupil of Camille Pissarro, the groundbreaking Impressionist artist who boldly organized the first independent painting exhibitions in late-19th-century Paris.

The boundary-expanding work of the Postimpressionist painters, which focused on real-life subject matter and featured a prioritization of geometric forms, would inspire the Nabis, German Expressionism, Cubism and other modern art movements to continue to explore abstraction and challenge expectations for art.

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Emilio Grau Sala (1911–1975) Deauville Sunset, 1972 Oil on canvas 60 × 73 cm (23.62 × 28.74 in) Frame: 73 × 86 cm (28.74 × 33.86 in) A luminous and atmospheric coastal scene painted in 1972 during the artist’s mature Paris period. This refined Normandy composition captures the delicate light of Deauville at sunset. Subtle tonal transitions, elegant brushwork and shimmering reflections across wet sand create a serene yet sophisticated atmosphere characteristic of Grau Sala’s late style. After settling in Paris in 1936, Grau Sala became associated with the School of Paris, developing a distinctive figurative language influenced by Impressionism and Fauvism while maintaining his own balance of harmony and chromatic restraint. His French coastal works from this mature period are among the most sought-after examples of his oeuvre. Signed and dated. Frame included. Excellent overall condition. A refined mid-20th-century School of Paris coastal painting, ideal for collectors and elevated interior environments. Son of cartoonist Juan Grau Miró, he was born in Barcelona in 1911. Although he attended the School of Fine Arts, his training is considered largely self-taught. His first exhibition takes place in 1930, at the "Badriñas Gallery" in the same city. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War (1936), Grau Sala left Spain with his wife, also a painter Ángeles Santos...

Pêcheurs Sur Les Rochers 1930s Framed Provencal Côte d'Azur Oil Painting

Located in Sutton Poyntz, Dorset

Gustave Vidal. French ( b.1895 - d.1966 ). Pêcheurs Sur Les Rochers. Bord De Mer En Côte d'Azur. Oil On Panel. Signed Lower Right. Image size 12.4 inches x 15.6 inches ( 31.5cm x 39.5cm ). Frame size 22.2 inches x 26 inches ( 56.5cm x 66cm ). Available for sale, this original oil painting is by the French artist Gustave Vidal and dates from around 1935. The painting is presented and supplied in its original frame. The original cotton slip has been replaced with a sympathetic contemporary slip that is in keeping with the fresh coastal aesthetic of the painting (which is shown in these photographs). This antique painting is in a good condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower right. Gustave Vidal was a 20th century French artist, and one of the best Provencal landscapers of his generation. He worked in the Provencal and Basque regions as well as Corsica and the centre of France. He was born in Avignon in 1895, in the Provence region of France, and died in the same town in 1966. Vidal trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon. It is often reported that he studied under Pierre Grivolas, (1823-1906) who was a prominent teacher there who had encouraged plein air painting to capture light and colour directly from nature. However, Grivolas died when Vidal was only 9 or 10, so it is very unlikely that there was a direct teacher/student relationship between them in a formal apprenticeship or atelier setting. Pierre Grivolas had been a director of the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon until his death in 1906, and found what became known as the Nouvelle école d’Avignon, promoting outdoor practice and modern landscape painting. Grivolas influenced a generation of Provençal painters directly, and his teachings persisted after his death. Vidal therefore studied in the establishment that continued his ethos and would have been influenced by Grivolas’ directorship. Vidal won numerous awards at the Beaux-Arts in Avignon and became a sociétaire (member) of the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, an important exhibition venue for French artists of the period. He actually wrote the articles of association for this establishment. As well as exhibiting in Avignon and Paris Vidal also exhibited in Berlin and Brussels. Vidal was primarily a landscape and marine painter. His work is associated with Provencal scenes — including rural landscapes, village streets, harbours, seascapes, and views of the French Riviera and interior France. His technique combined impasto application with both palette knife and brush, reflecting influences from Impressionism and post-Impressionist colourism encountered during his career, especially in Paris. This gives his canvases a textured, lively surface and strong sense of light and atmosphere. His works typically show rich colour and balanced composition, with evocative French light. Nowadays Vidal’s paintings appear regularly in antique galleries, auctions, and online sales in Europe and beyond, though he’s not commonly featured in major public museums or standard art history encyclopaedias. Auction results indicate steady interest among collectors of regional French painting, with prices varying according to size and subject. Although not among the most famous French painters of his generation, Gustave Vidal holds a solid place within early-to-mid-20th-century Provence painting, continuing the regional tradition of light, colour, and landscape that followed Impressionism, and appealing to contemporary collectors of Provençal and southern French art...

Projet de Tissus - Fauvist Flowers Watercolor & Gouache by Raoul Dufy
Projet de Tissus - Fauvist Flowers Watercolor & Gouache by Raoul Dufy

Projet de Tissus - Fauvist Flowers Watercolor & Gouache by Raoul Dufy

By Raoul Dufy

Located in Marlow, Buckinghamshire

Botanical watercolour and gouache on paper circa 1920 by French fauvist painter Raoul Dufy. The work depicts flowers in red, blue and green. This work was executed by Dufy as a fabric design. Dimensions: Framed: 19.5"x19.5" Unframed: 12"x12" Provenance: Private collection of works by Raoul Dufy for Bianchini Ferier Bianchini Ferrier Collection - Christie's London - July 2001 SF Fall Show Raoul Dufy was one of a family of nine children, including five sisters and a younger brother, Jean Dufy, also destined to become a painter. Their father was an accountant in the employ of a major company in Le Havre. The Dufy family was musically gifted: his father was an organist, as was his brother Léon, and his youngest brother Gaston was an accomplished flautist who later worked as a music critic in Paris. Raoul Dufy's studies were interrupted at the age of 14, when he had to contribute to the family income. He took a job with an importer of Brazilian coffee, but still found time from 1892 to attend evening courses in drawing and composition at the local college of fine arts under Charles Marie Lhullier, former teacher of Othon Friesz and Georges Braque. He spent his free time in museums, admiring the paintings of Eugène Boudin in Le Havre and The Justice of Trajan in Rouen. A municipal scholarship enabled him to leave for Paris in 1900, where he lodged initially with Othon Friesz. He was accepted by the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied under Léon Bonnat, whose innate conservatism prompted Dufy to remark later that it was 'good to be at the Beaux-Arts providing one knew one could leave'. And leave he did, four years later, embarking with friends and fellow students on the rounds of the major Paris galleries - Ambroise Vollard, Durand-Ruel, Eugène Blot and Berheim-Jeune. For Dufy and his contemporaries, Impressionism represented a rejection of sterile academism in favour of the open-air canvases of Manet, the light and bright colours of the Impressionists, and, beyond them, the daringly innovative work of Gauguin and Van Gogh, Seurat, Cézanne, Toulouse-Lautrec and others. Dufy was an out-and-out individualist, however, and was not tempted to imitate any of these artists. He produced, between 1935 and 1937, Fée Electricité (Spirit of Electricity), the emblem for the French utilities company Electricité de France (EDF). Dufy visited the USA for the first time in 1937, as a member of the Carnegie Prize jury. In 1940, the outbreak of war (and his increasingly rheumatic condition) persuaded him to settle in Nice. When he eventually returned to Paris 10 years later, his rheumatism had become so debilitating that he immediately left for Boston to follow a course of pioneering anti-cortisone treatment. He continued working, however, spending time first in Harvard and then in New York City before moving to the drier climate of Tucson, Arizona. The cortisone treatment was by and large unsuccessful, although he did recover the use of his fingers. He returned to Paris in 1951 and decided to settle in Forcalquier, where the climate was more clement. Within a short time, however, he was wheelchair-bound. He died in Forcalquier in March 1953 and was buried in Cimiez. Between 1895 and 1898, Raoul Dufy painted watercolours of landscapes near his native Le Havre and around Honfleur and Falaise. By the turn of the century, however, he was already painting certain subjects that were to become hallmarks of his work - flag-decked Parisian cityscapes, Normandy beaches teeming with visitors, regattas and the like, including one of his better-known early works, Landing Stage at Ste-Adresse. By 1905-1906 Friesz, Braque, Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck, Van Dongen and Rouault were described collectively as Fauves (the wild beasts). What they had in common was a desire to innovate, but they felt constrained nonetheless to meet formally to set out the guiding principles of what promised to be a new 'movement'. Dufy quickly established that those principles were acceptable; moreover, he was most impressed by one particular painting by Henri Matisse ( Luxury, Calm and Voluptuousness) which, to Dufy, embodied both novelty and a sense of artistic freedom. Dufy promptly aligned himself with the Fauves. Together with Albert Marquet in particular, he spent his time travelling the Normandy coast and painting views similar...

"Serene Sail"

By Warren W. Sheppard

Located in Southampton, NY

This oil on canvas painting was done by the American artist, Warren Sheppard. Signed twice lower left. One signature over another. See signatures photo's. Circa 1920 to 1930. Recently lightly cleaned and gold leaf frame custom made for the painting. Overall 27 by 37 inches. Some craquelure; mainly in sky. Otherwise, good condition. A student of Dutch marine artist, Mauritz de Haas, Warren Sheppard built two successful careers around his love of the sea: marine painting and yacht designing. He was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, a town on the Delaware River below Philadelphia, which has been associated with ships and shipping since the earliest Colonial times. His father was a sea captain and the young Sheppard took many voyages with his father to make artistic studies. He learned perspective drawing at Cooper Union in New York City in addition to his studies with de Haas. In 1879, he spent four months sketching Mediterranean port cities including Gibraltar, Genoa, Naples and Messina in Sicily. Between 1888 and 1893, he also studied painting in Venice and Paris. By the time he was in his mid-thirties, he had established himself as a successful illustrator and painter. The yachts he painted were the most lavish of his day, owned by the wealthiest of men. He was an expert in the design and rigging of ships of present and earlier times. His work was highly regarded for its authenticity as well as its artistic merit.Sheppard was also an expert navigator and sailed a number of famous yachts in races. Twice he was to command Tamerlane when it won the New York to Bermuda run. His book, Practical Navigation, was used for many years by the United States Naval Academy...
