Joshua Lutz is an American artist working with large-format photography and video. Lutz began photographing the Meadowlands ten years ago as a a documentary study of the 32-square-miles of marshy wilderness that sits between New Jersey and New York (while ostensibly searching for the remains of Jimmy Hoffa). Over the years, however, this project evolved into a compelling artistic exploration, revealing the soul of this liminal space.
Lutz was given his first solo exhibition at Gitterman Gallery during the summer of 2004. In 2008, “Meadowlands,” was published as Lutz's first book, with powerHouse Books. In essayist Robert Sullivan’s introduction to the monograph, he describes the Meadowlands as “. . .that giant swath of swamp and space that separates New Jersey from New York City, or, put another way, from New York City and the rest of the United States of America.” “The New Yorker” wrote: “Joshua Lutz takes the New Topographics...

300 Lancaster II aeroplanes were made, fitted with Bristol Hercules radial engines, as there was a worry that there would be a shortage of Merlin engines, reserved for the Spitfire and Hurricane.
Lily Mars was named after the 1943 American musical starring Judy Garland and was based at RAF Waterbeach, in Cambridgeshire. A podcast gives details of the final flight on 13 June 1944 which was to be the final raid of the crew’s tour. The bombing raid was of 303 Lancasters against the Nordstern synthetic oil plant at Gelsenkichen in the Ruhr, deep inside Germany and the aircraft took off at 23.12 hrs. On the home run LL678 was intercepted and shot down by a night fighter capitained by Oberleutnant Schmidt in a Bf 110 at 01.24 hrs at Zuidloo, a small hamlet, where five of the eight crew are buried; the other three crew members baled out and escaped. The Fieseler Fi 156 Storch, meaning "stork", was a small German liaison aircraft built by Fieseler before and during World War II. It was notable for its excellent short-takeoff-and-landing performance and low stall speed of 31 mph.
The Storch was deployed in all European and North African theaters of World War II. In addition to its liaison function, a number were used to fly a battalion of Infantry Regiment Grossdeutschland behind enemy lines during the invasion of Belgium.
In 1943, the Storch played a role in Operation Eiche, the rescue of deposed Italian dictator Benito Mussolini from a boulder-strewn mountain-top near the Gran Sasso...

This Kawasaki Ki-61 (known as "Tony" in the Allied code) was the only fighter with a liquid-cooled engine that the Japanese Army Air Force put into the field during World War II. It was this that made the Tony so unlike the other Japanese planes that the Allies believed it to be German- or Italian-made. While the engine was a license-built version of a German Daimler Benz engine, the rest of the aircraft was an all-Japanese design. The Tony proved to be a match for Allied fighters, due chiefly to its particularly heavy armament, good protective armour, and high speed dives. The Ki-61 was one of the few interceptors that could reach the same altitude as the the American B-29 Superfortresses (posters of which are also available).
When the Tony entered combat during 1943, it could outrun, outdive and outclimb every Allied fighter except the P-38 Lightning. It was the first fighters to be equipped with fuel tank...

A particularly unusual style of aeroplane identification poster, owing to the very arty images. Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes, this series - and we have many in this series - have a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view.
The Ventura was a twin-engine medium bomber and patrol bomber of World War II. It first entered combat in Europe as a bomber with the RAF in late 1942. Designated PV-1 by the United States Navy (US Navy), it entered combat in 1943 in the Pacific. The bomber was also used by the United States Army Air Forces and by British Commonwealth forces in several guises, including antishipping and antisubmarine search and attack.
