In 1967, General Idea was founded in Toronto by AA Bronson (b. 1946), Felix Partz (1945-1994), and Jorge Zontal (1944-1994). Over the course of 25 years, they made a significant contribution to postmodern and conceptual art in Canada and beyond. The group was both prolific and multi-disciplinary long before it became de rigueur. They with photography, sculpture, painting, mail art, video, installation, multiples, and performance. With their subversive approach and interest in parody and appropriation, General Idea addressed a broad range of social (and art-world) issues such as the cult of the artist, mass media, queer identity, and consumerism. Thematic continuity was a key element in General Idea's work. Early on they introduced talismans or logos that they would revisit and re-envision, including skulls, ziggurats, and poodles. This one of a kind photo arrangement on 100% rag paper by Candice CMC measures 39x32" the Framed size is approx. 46x40". Candice creates her donut portraits from her original photographs of donuts. No software program of any kind is used in creating the portrait, Candice goes through the arduous task of looking through her photos to select just the right images with the correct texture, color and highlights that are needed for each area of the portrait. Nowadays, so many people are using programs to create images, it's nice to know that this artist is using her artistic talent to create these intricate realistic portraits. The Photographic arrangements of Candice CMC receive an immediate response on the part of the viewer. This work was printed in the early 1920's in a small edition. Originally from Czechoslovakia, Fédor Löwenstein (Munich, 1901 - Nice, 1946) studied art in Germany before moving to Paris in 1923, attracted by its artistic influence. There he mixed with the painter André Lhote from Bordeaux and joined the Groupe des Surindépendants in 1936. His style evolved from Cubism to a form of Romantic abstraction. In 1938, he painted La Chute (The Fall), inspired by the signing of the Munich Agreement ratifying the dismantling of the Czechoslovakia created in 1918. France’s entry into the war drove him to leave the capital for Mirmande, a ruined village in the Drôme region, where Lhote held a summer academy. Löwenstein then divided his time between Mirmande and Nice where his mother and sister lived, but had to take refuge for a time in the Abbey of Aiguebelle. Oli Sorenson’s solo exhibition, «Après moi, le déluge » discloses a series of impactful works on the deadly perils of capitalism through a group of paintings, prints, watercolours, and installations. The title draws a parallel between our times and Louis the XV’s sentiment, the French king’s citation indicating his disconnect with what chaos he left in the wake of his excesses. The same phrase was later revisited by Marx to stigmatize the bourgeoisie of his era, as the leitmotif of the flood strongly features throughout history and human consciousness from past myths to our very factual and impending future. Biblical creatures were punished for their sins by torrents, and today with climate change, we are also faced with rising seas and historic inundations worldwide. Hence the mood of Sorenson’s show reflects our anxieties in the face of natural disasters and the weight of the Anthropocene—the impact of human activities on the Earth’s ecosystem—bearing down on our collective psyche.
