Rolf Stoll (American, 1892-1978) Spanish Seaside Village (Cadaques Catalonia) Oil on canvas Signed lower right 28 x 38 inches Exhibited: The 11th Annual May Show, Cleveland Museum of Art, 1929 Rolf Stoll, a painter of figure subjects, landscapes and floral still lifes, was an important member of the Cleveland art scene during the second quarter of the century. He was also an influential teacher, as well as one of Ohio’s foremost portrait painters. Rolf Stoll was born in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1892. As a boy, he attended a military academy, during which time he developed an interest in art. He received his early formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. He emigrated to the United States in 1912, settling in New York City. A decade later, after studying at the school of the National Academy of Design and supporting himself by working as a commercial artist, Stoll decided to leave New York. Upon the recommendation of Warren Pryor, one of his teachers, he decided to move to Cleveland, Ohio. After arriving in Cleveland, Rolf Stoll continued to work as a commercial artist. However, in 1926, he joined the faculty of the Cleveland School of Art, where he taught drawing. Two years later Stoll was appointed head of the school’s portrait painting department. A talented portraitist, Stoll’s sitters included industrialists, community leaders and many prominent members of Cleveland and Ohio society, as well as over twenty faculty members from Case Western Reserve University. Stoll also gave portrait classes at the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute from 1926 to 1953. In his male portraits especially, he was admired for his ability to convey the dignity of his sitter’s professional position without sacrificing individuality. As noted by one contemporary reviewer, Stoll was a “master of rich color, a searching student of human types, a forceful portrayer of all that the face reveals of the mind and the soul.” In addition to his activity as a portraitist, Rolf Stoll painted figure subjects and floral still lifes. He was also known for his views of the Ohio countryside and Canada. Stoll also painted views of Spain and depictions of Spanish peasants, inspired by an extended trip to that country (1926), during which time he was entertained by the famous Spanish portrait painter, Ignacio Zuloaga. Moving easily between oil and watercolor, Stoll worked in an direct realist style, combining his characteristic firm draftsmanship with the use of simplified forms and decorative color. Description An exceptionally atmospheric Mediterranean village scene by Joan Roig i Soler, one of the founders and leading representatives of the Sitges Luminist School. The composition depicts a sunlit church square animated by a gathering of villagers dressed in traditional clothing. Several figures appear to carry baskets or offerings, suggesting a local religious celebration, market day or procession taking place outside the church. Whitewashed houses, balconies, green shutters and warm ochre façades frame the scene, creating an evocative image of everyday life in a historic Spanish coastal town. Roig i Soler constructs the view through loose, confident brushwork and a luminous palette of pale blues, creams, rose, ochre and muted green. The broad foreground and diagonal shadows guide the eye towards the group assembled beside the church entrance, while the vivid Mediterranean sky gives the entire painting a radiant, open-air atmosphere. The contrast between the sunlit architecture and the compact crowd demonstrates the artist’s ability to combine landscape, urban architecture and costumbrista figure painting. Rather than describing every individual in detail, Roig i Soler uses rapid touches of colour to create movement, light and social energy. The result is spontaneous and highly decorative, yet also historically evocative. Works showing populated streets and village squares are especially desirable within Roig i Soler’s production, as they unite his celebrated treatment of Mediterranean light with a vivid record of Catalan and Spanish daily life. Artist biography Joan Roig i Soler was born in Barcelona in 1852 and became one of the most important Catalan landscape painters of the late 19th century. He studied at the Escola de la Llotja in Barcelona and trained under Modest Urgell, one of the leading Spanish landscape painters of his generation. After travelling through France and Italy, Roig i Soler settled for extended periods in Sitges, where he worked alongside Arcadi Mas i Fondevila. Together they became central figures in the development of the Sitges Luminist School, a pioneering movement devoted to plein-air painting, Mediterranean light and direct observation of nature. The Sitges Luminists moved away from academic historical painting and focused instead on beaches, ports, village streets, churches and everyday life. Their experiments with natural light anticipated important aspects of Catalan Modernism and helped establish Sitges as one of the principal artistic centres of Spain. Roig i Soler painted throughout Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, including Sitges, Barcelona, Blanes, Tossa de Mar, Cadaqués, Camprodon and Mallorca. His work is admired for its luminous colour, animated brushwork and sensitive depiction of Mediterranean architecture and coastal atmosphere. He participated in major exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid, Zaragoza and Paris and served as a jury member at the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition. His paintings are represented in important public collections, including the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya and the museums of Sitges. Artistic inspiration The luminous treatment of architecture and atmosphere recalls the Mediterranean clarity of Joaquín Sorolla, while the lively arrangement of figures and spontaneous plein-air brushwork evokes Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Camille Pissarro. The elegant observation of everyday urban life also connects the work with John Singer Sargent and the Venetian street scenes of Maurice Prendergast, filtered through the distinctive light and vernacular architecture of Catalonia. My likeness is both implicit and symbolic in the portrayal of my narrative; the drama involved in creating art and the artist’s role in society. I use realism to invite the viewer into mysterious inner worlds that are layered reflections of the outer. Dehumanizing environments are imbued with art historical references as a critique of power structures. The artist is an Everyman who is at odds with society and his self. Visually my work is a celebration of society’s dark undercurrents and its overlooked absurdities. I use charcoal and printmaking media as their tenebrous values add a fitting metaphor. The nuances of light and shadow seduce viewers into a world their better judgment would have them avoid. This provokes a sense of disquietude that causes viewers to assess our world through the austerity of a colorless, yet not humorless, light. -BIO- Christopher Ganz grew up in Northeast Ohio and from early on had a fertile imagination and an interest in art. Christopher's artistic education truly began at the University of Missouri, where his love of the human form led to many figure drawing classes and his exposure to the wonders of printmaking. Christopher's then went onto graduate school at Indiana University and a summer abroad program in Italy was a dream realized. Christopher then grasped charcoal with a renewed vigor and large, sfumato-laden drawings ensued. Christopher's artistic influences are many; from a seminal exposure to Dore's engravings of the Divine Comedy, to Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Goya, and up to Lucian Freud, Mark Tansey, and Michael Mazur. Christopher is now an associate professor of printmaking and drawing at Indiana-Purdue University Fort Wayne.
