By Charles Meryon

Located in Roma, IT

Tourelle de la rue de la Tixeranderie is an original Modern Artwork realized in the half of the 19th Century by Charles Meryon (sometimes Méryon, 23 November 1821 – 14 February 1868). Original Etching. Fine impression printed by the artist. II/III state on V. Total dimensions: 24 x 12 cm. Passepartout is included. Excellent conditions of sheet. Reference: Salimbeni no.163; Schneiderman n. 24; Delteil n. 29. Charles Meryon (sometimes Méryon, 23 November 1821 – 14 February 1868). He was a French artist who worked almost entirely in etching, as he suffered from color blindness. Although now little-known in the English-speaking world, he is generally recognized as the most significant etcher of 19th century France. His most famous works by him are a series of views powerfully conveying his distinctive Gothic vision of Paris. He also suffered from mental illness, dying in an asylum. Meryon had sketched in Athens, Algiers and other exotic places he had visited, and by late 1840 decided to take lessons in drawing from the Toulon...

The story of two worlds, two entities; separated by distance and their journey of reconnection. - The Spaces in Between series While aboard an Irish ferry bound for Cork, a window reveals swirling waves beneath the horizon. The rocking of the ferry fills and empties the frame with a hypnotic dance of the sea. Cawston expertly times the shot, capturing a window predominantly filled with the sea, only a slender glow peeking through. The two chairs, positioned in almost mirror symmetry, face opposite directions, also add to the story. They journey together on the ferry traversing predetermined locations across a geographical boundary.  A metaphor perhaps, about connection of two worlds separated by distance. Challenging as a situation and journey may be, there is a beacon of hope on the horizon...

60 x 45 inches ed. of 5 $6,000 80 x 60 inches ed. of 5 $9,000 93.2 x 70 inches ed. of 5 $11,000 signed and numbered on label, verso Reinhard Görner, with his large format photographs orchestrates the monumentality of historical architecture, gardens, and masterpieces. An active architecture photographer since 1985, is a master of perspectives and precise spatial compositions, and he thus considers classical sculpture, in all of its possible facets, a special challenge. "Görner’s photographs sometimes open the doors to another world and take the viewer with them on a journey through time. Here the palace is no longer a museum but both royal residence and a site steeped in history. The viewer does not have to share the halls with the masses of visitors; instead the images offer him exclusive impressions of the Galerie des Glaces (Hall of Mirrors) and the Galerie des Batailles (Hall of Battles) as even the king of France was probably never granted. The halls are empty of people, yet they seem to be able to unfurl their individual characters of their own accord. These places practically breathe history, and this aspect is also part of the essence captured in the photographs. King Wilhelm of Prussia was named German Emperor Wilhelm I in the Hall of Mirrors after France was defeated in 1870–1871 in the Franco-German War. The Treaty of Versailles following World War I was also signed there in 1919. In this sense, the architectural photographs of Versailles’s ceremonial rooms have an edge on Renaissance paintings; here even a sense of world history arises within the viewer – one which continues to exert an influence today". Horst Klöver Notes on the Old National Gallery and Sleeping Beauty: The Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie) is the original home of the Nationalgalerie, whose collections today are divided between the New National Gallery, the Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum for Contemporary Art – Berlin, the Friedrichswerder Church, Museum Berggruen and the Collection Scharf-Gerstenberg. The idea of establishing a cultural and educational centre across from the Berlin Palace...

Artist Biography - While Knorr’s images take some of their inspiration from the Indian tradition of personifying animals in literature and art, there is another almost subconscious strain to her work. Going back to the time of cave painting we see that these early visual artists not only recorded their lives and surroundings, but used art to express themselves. The depiction of animals in symbolic and powerful ways and the urge to create these images with the best tools at hand is a line stretching from these unnamed cave painters to Karen Knorr. Playfully combining technologies and genres, Knorr mixes digital...

Martyl Schweig Victor Colorado 1942 Ghost Town Landscape Oil Painting

By Martyl Suzanne Schweig Langsdorf

Located in Denver, CO

A historically significant 1942 American modernist oil painting by Martyl Schweig Langsdorf depicting Victor, Colorado, a high-altitude mining ghost town nestled within the Rocky Mountains. The composition captures the stark beauty and atmospheric stillness of a fading Western settlement, where abandoned structures, rugged terrain, and expansive mountain forms merge into a powerful narrative landscape. Painted in oil on masonite, the work features Schweig’s expressive plein-air brushwork and a richly grounded palette of deep greens, muted golds, earthy browns, and atmospheric grays. The paint handling is both fluid and structured, emphasizing light, elevation, and the emotional weight of the post–Gold Rush landscape rather than strict topographical accuracy. This early American modernist Western painting carries strong narrative presence while remaining visually balanced, making it highly effective in both traditional interiors and more contemporary, curated environments. Created in 1942 during Schweig’s Colorado painting trips with fellow artist Adolph Dehn...

Hiroshi Yoshida, 'Chion-in Temple Gate (Sunset)' from the series 'Eight Scenes of Cherry Blossoms (Sakura hachi dai: Sakura mon)', color woodblock print, 1935. Signed in brush 'Yoshida' and in pencil 'Hiroshi Yoshida'. A superb, early impression, with fresh colors; the full sheet with margins, on cream Japan paper; an area of slight toning in the top right sheet corner, not affecting the image, otherwise in excellent condition. Marked with a jizuri (self-printed) seal, upper left margin. Self-published by the artist. Image size 9 5/8 x 14 3/4 inches (444 x 375 mm); sheet size 10 7/8 x 16 inches (276 x 406 mm). Archivally sleeved, unmatted. Provenance: M. Nakazawa, Tokyo. Literature: Japanese Landscapes of the 20th Century (Hotei Publishing calendar), 2001, May. ABOUT THE IMAGE Located in Kyoto, Chionin is the main temple of the Jodo sect of Japanese Buddhism, one of the most popular Buddhist sects in Japan, having millions of followers. The Sanmon Gate, Chionin's entrance gate, standing 24 meters tall and 50 meters wide, it is the largest wooden temple gate in Japan and dates back to the early 1600s. Behind the gate, a broad set of stairs leads to the main temple grounds. ABOUT THE ARTIST Painter and printmaker Yoshida Hiroshi (1876-1950) is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the Japanese 'shin hanga' (New Print) movement. Yoshida was born as the second son of Ueda Tsukane in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, a schoolteacher from an old samurai family. In 1891 he was adopted by his art teacher Yoshida Kasaburo in Fukuoka and took his surname. In 1893 he went to Kyoto to study painting, and the following year to Tokyo to join Koyama Shotaro's Fudosha private school; he also became a member of the Meiji Fine Arts Society. These institutions taught and advocated Western-style painting, greatly influencing Yoshida’s artistic development. In 1899 Yoshida had his first American exhibition at Detroit Museum of Art (now Detroit Institute of Art), making the first of many visits to the US and Europe. In 1902 he helped reorganize the Meiji Fine Arts Society, renaming it the Taiheiyo-Gakai (Pacific Painting...

20th Century Spanish Seaside Village (Cadaques Catalonia), Cleveland School

By Rolf Stoll

Located in Beachwood, OH

Rolf Stoll (American, 1892-1978) Spanish Seaside Village (Cadaques Catalonia) Oil on canvas Signed lower right 28 x 38 inches Exhibited: The 11th Annual May Show, Cleveland Museum of Art, 1929 Rolf Stoll, a painter of figure subjects, landscapes and floral still lifes, was an important member of the Cleveland art scene during the second quarter of the century. He was also an influential teacher, as well as one of Ohio’s foremost portrait painters. Rolf Stoll was born in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1892. As a boy, he attended a military academy, during which time he developed an interest in art. He received his early formal training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. He emigrated to the United States in 1912, settling in New York City. A decade later, after studying at the school of the National Academy of Design and supporting himself by working as a commercial artist, Stoll decided to leave New York. Upon the recommendation of Warren Pryor, one of his teachers, he decided to move to Cleveland, Ohio. After arriving in Cleveland, Rolf Stoll continued to work as a commercial artist. However, in 1926, he joined the faculty of the Cleveland School of Art, where he taught drawing. Two years later Stoll was appointed head of the school’s portrait painting department. A talented portraitist, Stoll’s sitters included industrialists, community leaders and many prominent members of Cleveland and Ohio society, as well as over twenty faculty members from Case Western Reserve University. Stoll also gave portrait classes at the John Huntington Polytechnic Institute from 1926 to 1953. In his male portraits especially, he was admired for his ability to convey the dignity of his sitter’s professional position without sacrificing individuality. As noted by one contemporary reviewer, Stoll was a “master of rich color, a searching student of human types, a forceful portrayer of all that the face reveals of the mind and the soul.” In addition to his activity as a portraitist, Rolf Stoll painted figure subjects and floral still lifes. He was also known for his views of the Ohio countryside and Canada. Stoll also painted views of Spain and depictions of Spanish peasants, inspired by an extended trip to that country (1926), during which time he was entertained by the famous Spanish portrait painter, Ignacio Zuloaga. Moving easily between oil and watercolor, Stoll worked in an direct realist style, combining his characteristic firm draftsmanship with the use of simplified forms and decorative color. Rolph Stoll was a member of the Cleveland Society of Artists, the Cleveland Print Club...
