Bedroom Brunette with Irises
Located in Palm Desert, CA
A sculpture by Tom Wesselmann. "Bedroom Brunette with Irises" is a contemporary wall sculpture, oil on cut-out aluminum by Blue Chip, Pop artist Tom Wesselmann. The work is unsigned. This piece was conceived in 1988 and frabricated by Lippincott Sculpture studio in 2004. Tom Wesselmann was born in Cincinnati Ohio on February 23 1931. He attended college from 1945-1951, first at the Hiram College in Ohio and then the University of Cincinnati, where he majored in psychology. He was drafted during the Korean War in 1952, and it was during this time that Wesselmann did his first cartoons. After he was discharged and had finished in degree in psychology, Wesselmann began to study drawing at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. He sold his first cartoon strips to two magazines, 1000 Jokes and True. In 1956, he was accepted to Cooper Union in New York and he continued his studies there. It was while he was studying in New York, specifically on a trip to the MoMA that Wesselmann became inspired by Robert Motherwell and Willem de Kooning. In 1958, a landscape painting trip to Cooper Union’s Green Camp in New Jersey brought him to the realization that he could make his career in painting, rather than cartooning. After graduation, Wesselmann became one of the founding members of the Judson Gallery, along with Marc Ratliff and Jim Dine. Wesselmann also began to teach art at a public school in Brooklyn and later at the High School of Art and Design. In 1961, Wesselmann began the series that would bring him to the attention of the art world, Great American Nude. After a dream concerning the phrase “red, white and blue”, Wesselmann decided to limit himself to a palette of only those colors (including colors like gold and khaki that are associated with patriotic motifs). This series incorporated representational images along the same patriotic theme, including American landscape photographs and portraits of the founding fathers. Wesselmann often collaged these images from magazines and discarded posters which required him to work in a much larger format than he was used to. As his works became larger and larger he approached advertisers directly to acquire billboards. Wesselmann’s first solo show was held in 1961 at Tanager Gallery. In 1962, Richard Bellamy gave him a one man exhibition at the Green Gallery. In 1962, Wesselmann participated in the group exhibition “New Realists” at the Sidney Janis Gallery and kicked off his international career. In that same year his first pieces with the title of Still Life, came about. In these works, Wesselmann concentrated on the juxtaposition of different elements, i.e. a cigarette ad...

"Daddy Playing in the Mud" San Antonio Texas Black Folk Artist Johnny Banks
Located in San Antonio, TX
Johnny Banks (1912-1988) San Antonio Artist Image Size: 13.75 x 20 Frame Size: 20 x 27 Medium: Pen, Pencil, Crayon, Marker "Daddy Playing in the Mud" Biography Johnny Banks (1912-1988) In my opinion one of the greatest Texas folk artists of all time. The following information was compiled and submitted by Stephanie Reeves: John Willard Banks, San Antonio, Texas, African American Folk Artist John Willard Banks, black self-taught artist, the son of Charlie and Cora Lee (McIntyre) Banks, was born on November 7, 1912, near Seguin, Texas. At the age of five his parents took him to San Antonio, where he attended Holy Redeemer School until the age of nine, when his parents were divorced and John returned to his grandparents' farm near Seguin. From childhood Banks's favorite pastime was drawing pictures on his Big Chief tablet. He later recalled, "As a kid I used to lie flat on my stomach, drawing and drawing. . . . My mother had to kick me off the floor to sweep." While helping out on his grandparents' farm, Banks completed the tenth grade before striking out on his own. His favorite activities during his youth were singing in a gospel quartet and playing baseball. In his adult years he worked in oilfields and cotton fields, drove a truck, and tended a San Antonio service station. During World War II he joined the army; he held the rank of sergeant and was stationed in the Philippines. After the war he returned to San Antonio, where he worked as a custodian at Kelly Air Force Base, at Fort Sam Houston, and at a local television station. Banks married Edna Mae Mitchell in 1928, and they had five children. The marriage ended in divorce around 1960. In 1963 he married Earlie Smith. His art career began in 1978 while he was recuperating from an illness for which he had been hospitalized. Banks's wife admired her husband's drawings and secretly took several of them to a San Antonio laundromat. There she hung the drawings on the wall, offering them for sale at the price of fourteen dollars. They were purchased and taken to a gallery for framing. Quite by chance, a San Antonio physician and collector of works of art by black artists...

Eugénie Buffet Ambassadeurs by Lucien Métivet, Imperial Japon lithograph, 1897
Located in Chicago, IL
Eugénie Buffet was a French singer, actress, and pioneer of the chanson réaliste (realist song) genre, which portrayed the day to day lives of the poor and working-class in Paris. Métivet’s Ambassadeurs poster depicts Buffet as a prostitute working on the cold, windy streets of Paris; Buffet describes following working women to effectively reflect their demeanor in her roles, “Huddled in the shadow of dark alleys, I espied their beckoning calls to passersby, followed them from afar, scraping invisibly along the walls, listened to their words in the doorways of seedy hotels; sometimes, even, made up and dressed like them, I would slip among them, sitting at tables in their dives, and join in the conversation” (Buffet, 1930 via Conway, 2004). Her name, much like that of fellow performer Aristide Bruant, was further solidified in history by their likenesses in iconic and historically important artworks by Métivet’s and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. “Métivet’s talent is seen at its best in the Eugénie Buffet advertisements, two studies worthy a place amongst the best posters which have come from the hands of contemporary French artists” (Hiatt, 1896). This artwork is presented in an archival rag mat. Notable museum collections containing this work include: Yale University Art Gallery (large-format version) (1969.3.3) Notable museum collections featuring works by Lucien...
