Wilson Bigaud
Voodoo Devils Take the Sick - The Fight of Good vs Evil - Vodou

1950s

About the Item

Devils depicted. Artist Wilson Bigaud paints a graphic narrative of mid-century life in Haiti without modern medicine. A man is dying yet there is no doctor present. In the struggle between good and evil, a life lies in the balance. It is unclear who will win this battle. Will the sick Haitian man survive? We do not know. The Catholic Priest, his Acolyte, the sick man's wife, and perhaps his brother are outnumbered by hyper-aggressive spear and sword-carrying horned and winged fire devils. They are in motion. The family members are dead still. The devils are trying to take possession of the man. The devil on the right pulls the sick man while a devil from outside the house leans inside. A third devil walks out of the picture plane as if he is confident the mission will be accomplished, Clearly, they are trying to take the sick man away. The scene is tied into the traditions of Haitian Voodoo, which provides religious and spiritual healing as it merges with Roman Catholicism. Signed lower right and inscribed on verso in French/Creole. "Diables contre prete pour le malad. " Framed.

The painting depicts a typical day of commuting, with passengers lost in thought or absorbed in their phones as they await their stops. The lack of direct interaction between them highlights the solitary yet collective experience of modern urban life. Their different colored attire adds vibrancy to the everyday scene.
