In the 1970's after Picasso's death, Marina Picasso, his granddaughter, authorized the creation of this lithograph by Laurent Marcel Salinas, who worked closely with Picasso during his lifetime. The limited edition print run was completed and published by Marina Picasso in conjunction with Jackie Fine Arts in 1982. The lithograph is printed on French Arches paper, ink-stamped by the Estate verso, and hand-signed and numbered edition of 500 by Marina Picasso on the recto. The embossed seal of the Estate is lower right and the printer's chop, lower left. This bronze is the larger, highly detailed version of the fisherman that made Parisian artist Adolphe Jean Lavergne famous. In preparation for fishing, the boy prepares his rod before heading out to sea. The attachment of the iron ring and the rope behind him suggest a quay wall and a boat moored there. However, the depiction is entirely focused on the actual action of the young fisherman: With equal skill and concentration, he bends a hook to connect it to the fishing line. The contrast with his casual clothing, the loose-fitting trousers, the open shirt with its "wild" folds, and, last but not least, the sun hat boldly perched on his neck, reinforces the impression of the attentive care with which he goes about his work. His gaze makes him appear absorbed, as if he has forgotten the world around him and yet he is visibly filled with anticipation of fishing.

Ladies with Lavender & Cyan Seaside Reflections, Figurative Seascape

Dreamy figurative seascape of two ladies on the beach wading in shallow waters, depicted in a beautiful tonal palette of soft cyan and lavender hues, by Alan David Cours (American, b. 1950). The subtle reflections of the women in the water add a touch of detail to the almost abstracted blend of colors that makes up the water and sky, and tiny sails dot the horizon line to imply space. Cours' background as an abstract artist is apparent in this scene, which is grounded in reality only by use of the most important details. The artist allows the mood of the colors to come to the forefront, and any unnecessary details, like the faces of the women or delineation of successive waves in the water, to fall away.

Cours, Alan David (American, b. 1950) was born in Ohio in 1950. He remained there until 1972, when he graduated from Kenyon College with Highest Honors in art. In 1974, Cours moved to New York to accept a grant from the Whitney Museum of American Art. He subsequently obtained an M.F.A. in painting from Hunter College in New York.
Originally trained as an abstract artist, Cours became interested in American Impressionism after viewing the work of A. Gisson. He became an informal apprenticeship with Gisson which lasted over ten years. Today, Cours’ style bears evidence of Gisson’s influence but has a delicate touch which is uniquely suited to his vision of our world. He is deeply interested in exploring the power of color to evoke light and mood. His subjects are landscapes, beach scenes, florals, architectural scenes, nudes, and still life.
The work of A. David Cours has been exhibited throughout most of the United States. He has become a very successful artist and his work is in both large and small collections in the United States and abroad.

A fine, richly-inked impression, with fresh colors, on cream wove paper; the full sheet with margins (1 3/8 to 2 1/2 inches), in excellent condition.
Chichicastenango, also known as Santo Tomás Chichicastenango, is a town in the El Quiché department of Guatemala, located in a mountainous region about 140 km northwest of Guatemala City. Chichicastenango is a K'iche' Maya cultural center, with the great majority of the municipality's population indigenous Mayan K'iche. The church depicted is the 400-year-old church Iglesia de Santo Tomás. Built atop a Pre-Columbian temple platform, the steps which remain venerated today, originally led to a temple of the pre-Hispanic Maya civilization. K'iche' Maya priests still use the church for their rituals, burning incense and candles. Each of the 18 stairs that lead up to the church stands for one month of the Maya calendar year.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jesse Floyd Reed (1920-2011) studied art in New York City at the Grand Central School of Art and the Art Students’ League. He held degrees in History and English and completed special advance studies in Asian, African, and Latin American art, history and culture. At the time of his retirement, he was a Professor of the Arts Emeritus at Davis & Elkins College, a position he held for over forty-nine years.
A nationally recognized artist since 1947, Professor Reed’s art has been shown in hundreds of museums, libraries, colleges, and universities, including the Boston Museum, National Museum, The Library of Congress, Brooklyn Museum, and Seattle Museum. In his native West Virginia, he is represented in the permanent collections of the Huntington Museum and the Charleston Museum at Sunrise.
The recipient of many national and regional awards, Reed was a member of the Salmagundi Club in NY, the Boston Printmakers, the Print Club of Albany, and was a founding member of the West Virginia Water...
