Ryan Wilks is a self-taught artist based in Kansas City, Missouri. Their work explores the various realities of queer existence. Primarily creating with oils, watercolors, sculptural assemblage, and ritual, their work sheds light on queer expression of spirituality and sexuality. Their bodies of work address and confront religion used as weapon and explores new modes of prayer through visual and participatory exhibitions. While religious and archetypal iconography such as the Devil and Lilith are seen within their figures in their paintings and used to express gender and queer ideologies, the work itself does not adopt the feeling of weighted religious rites. Instead, the work invites the viewer to participate in a modernized expression of spirit. Through figurative and narrative drawing and painting, through community-based performance ritual and ceremony, Wilks makes art that explores the various realities of queer existence. Gleaning inspiration from centuries old religious iconography and the oral and written histories documenting the queer experience from the beginning of time to their own personal experience today, Wilks' work strives to depict the push/pull, persecute/elevate relationships of humanity, sexuality, and spirituality. The use of more traditional materials and methods in Wilks' painting and drawing is an intentional nod to Italian masters such as Caravaggio, Titian, and Raphael, but it is the playfulness of Matisse’s figures and the contorting figures of Schiele that have influenced their work the most. Ritual and ceremonial performance is an integral aspect of Wilks'art. The use of objects, both found and made, and base elemental ingredients in occult practices are key components to their performances. Through movement, through ceremony, through studied and adaptive ritual, Wilks is able to engage an audience and create moments of sacred memory. Wilks' performance work is created and displayed in tandem with their 2-D work and further explores concepts displayed within their paintings and drawings. Through these methods of creating, engagement, and display of their art, Wilks strives to express the personal narrative of their queer experience, of their peers’, of those who have passed, and, ultimately, for future generations to research, decode, confront, and enjoy. Wilks has exhibited their work in at least 20 different solo exhibitions across the Kansas City Metropolitan area as well as being featured in 18 different publications regarding their work. Wilks' most recent artist residencies include the Artist in Residence program at the Crossroads Hotel, located in the heart of Kansas City's well known Crossroads Arts District, January-February 2020; and the Artist in Residence program at Arts KC, Jun-July 2020. Richard Serra Ace LA Exhibition Poster Drawing, 1972 Ink on paper 8 1/2 x 11 inches Provenance: The artist Ace Gallery, Los Angeles Known for large-scale steel sculpture of geometric designs, Richard Serra has created site-specific pieces that make three-dimensional designs in space. He has also made wall reliefs and floor sculpture from flexible materials that suggest organic shapes. He is committed to the idea of utilizing quality materials and to the concept that process is as important as the final result. Serra was born in San Francisco and attended college at Berkeley and Santa Barbara, majoring in English Literature. He studied art at Yale University, earning a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. in 1964. There he worked with Josef Albers and came into contact with many leading artists of the New York School (Abstract Expressionists). He also had a job working in a steel plant, which had lasting influence on his career. On a Fulbright Scholarship, he studied in France and Italy. In 1977, he married Clara Wyergraf. In addition to steel as a medium for his sculptures, Serra has utilized rubber belts, neon tubes, molten lead, and large metal slabs. In 1968 he made his first Splash-piece, where molten lead was thrown against the point at which floor and wall meet. His 'Prop series" began around 1969 and involved placing large lead sheets against each other, several yards apart, or hung from ceilings. Many of his pieces are enormous three-dimensional configurations from steel beams and steel plates. His goal is to "create a 'field force . . . so that space is discerned physically rather than optically.' Based in New York City, Serra has traveled extensively to oversee his numerous site-specific sculptures including one for Videy Island near Reykjavik, Iceland. In the mid 1990s Richard Klein started working with found glass objects, including bottles, drinking glasses, ashtrays, and eyeglasses. Initially, Klein rejected any object with commercial or advertising content, but in 2015 he became fascinated with the promotional content that was screen printed on ashtrays from the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. This period was before smoking was looked at as being primarily a negative habit, and iconic American businesses, including Howard Johnson’s, International House of Pancakes (iHop) and Holiday Inn, all produced promotional ashtrays printed with their graphic identity. By the time Klein became interested in these objects, the businesses had either ceased to exist, or had changed their logos, and many of their signature buildings, which where examples of classic, “Pop” roadside architecture, has been torn down or repurposed. The artist wanted to connect the glass objects with the business’s sites that were still recognizable and spoke of their history, so he began researching where original buildings still stood. Klein then embarked on a series of road trips to photograph these sites with the intention of combining the photographs with the promotional glass objects. This led him to as far south as Maryland and as far north as upstate New York from his home in Connecticut. American Glassware (2010-present) which is presented in a small, wall-mounted vitrine. American Glassware is composed of three glass objects: a “souvenir” Walden Pond ashtray made by me as a multiple; a real souvenir ashtray from the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair; and an authentic “Happy Face” drinking glass from the same era. They are all nestled in crumpled, vintage newspaper from 1967, and are presented together in a dilapidated cardboard box, as if they have been found in someone’s attic or basement. Once again, in a similar manner to the Glass House Ashtray, versions of his Walden Pond ashtray (Walden Pond Souvenir) have been injected into the collectable stream of tag sales and flea markets, creating a souvenir that never existed. The ashtray is screenprinted with an image of Thoreau’s cabin on Walden Pond as pictured on the title page of his book Walden, or Life in the Woods (1854). (The original illustration was created by Thoreau’s sister, Sophia.) Walden Pond Souvenir was originally produced for the 2010 exhibition Renovating Walden at the Tufts University Art Gallery in Medford, MA.
