Ottoman Empire Map 1719 – Europe Asia Africa, Jean Chiquet, Paris

Located in Langweer, NL

Title: Ottoman Empire Map 1719 – Europe Asia Africa, Jean Chiquet, Paris Description: Original early-18th-century engraved map titled Estats de l’Empire du Grand Seigneur, depicting the Ottoman Empire across three continents: Europe, Asia, and Africa. This example is clearly dated 1719 in the engraved cartouche and bears the publisher’s imprint Chez Jacq. Chiquet à Paris 1719. The map presents the Ottoman Empire at an early Enlightenment moment, extending from Central and Southeastern Europe through Anatolia and the Levant, across Mesopotamia and Arabia, and into Egypt and the North African Barbary Coast. Political regions are defined by engraved boundaries and differentiated with original hand coloring, while coastlines, rivers, and seas are rendered with strong copper engraving typical of early 18th-century French map production. French toponymy is dense and legible, with major cities and regions clearly identified, including Constantinople, Aleppo, Damascus, Baghdad, Cairo, Mecca, and Jerusalem. The Mediterranean, Black Sea, Red Sea, and Caspian Sea anchor the composition and emphasize the empire’s strategic maritime reach. The decorative cartouche at upper right contains the full title and date, identifying the Ottoman ruler as “Grand Seigneur,” Sultan and Emperor of the Turks, ruling territories in Europe, Asia, and Africa. A lower table listing Ottoman rulers reinforces the political and didactic purpose of the map, which was intended both for geographic reference and informed private collecting. Issued by Jean Chiquet, a Parisian map seller active in the early 18th century, this map reflects the commercial dissemination of authoritative geographic models during the reign of Louis XV. It combines political clarity with restrained decorative appeal, making it equally suitable for scholarly collections and interior display. Condition report: Copper engraving with original hand coloring. Age-related toning and light spotting consistent with an early 18th-century print. Minor edge wear and small handling marks, mainly in the margins. Plate mark visible. No major losses or repairs. Overall very good condition for a map dated 1719. Framing tips: Preserve the full margins and visible plate mark with a wide ivory or parchment-toned mat. A walnut, ebonized wood, or muted antique gold frame complements the period character. For a cleaner contemporary look, use a slim black frame with generous off-white matting. SEO keyword block: Ottoman Empire map 1719, antique Ottoman map, Jean Chiquet map, Middle East map 18th century, Holy Land map antique, Arabia map 1719, Turkey map...

Stunning, top quality made antique pendant in the Gothic style. If you are a collector of rare and ancient looking Gothic antiques then this large size and possibly one of a kind pendant could be flying your way soon. With antique light fixtures as one of our specialities, we know how rare Gothic lanterns are and to have found one of this age, size, beauty and quality more than made our day. Also, because this all hand-crafted specimen is, except for the glass, completely original and in superb condition. What makes this stylishly blackened specimen stand out from the other Gothic lights that we have sold over the years, is the thickness of the forged wrought iron parts and its relatively clean-lined design. The forged iron is thick and strong and that too is why this large lantern light...

Antique Fine Handcarved Oak Gothic Revival Wall Shrine / Chapel for Statuette
Antique Fine Handcarved Oak Gothic Revival Wall Shrine / Chapel for Statuette

Antique Fine Handcarved Oak Gothic Revival Wall Shrine / Chapel for Statuette

Located in Lisse, NL

Rare and good condition, Gothic-art shrine for standing or wall-hanging. This handsome and decorative, Gothic wall shrine is completely hand-crafted out of solid oak and it will look awesome, no matter where you decide to mount or place her. It must have taken its creator quite a few days to first draw this intricate design on paper and then hand carve the entire piece out of solid oak. The Gothic Style elements are deeply handcarved in both doors and they make this shrine highly decorative and an absolute joy to own and look at. This cabinet chapel (or chapel cabinet) comes with its brass lock in perfect working order and also with its original gothic style key. The handgrip is in fact a Gothic trefoil symbol (for the trinity). What also makes this piece extra attractive is the Gothic church window-like frame behind the doors. It is among the finest we have seen to date and on top of that this antique also has a beautiful and rich patina. By the way, the bronze Mary statuette is not included in our price. Finally, thanks to the hook in the back, mounting this antique chapel...

Located in Langweer, NL

Circa 1691 Frederick de Wit Map: Middle East with Arabia, Persia & More This exquisite hand-colored map, circa 1691, by Frederick de Wit, illustrates the Middle East, spanning from Turkey and Egypt to Afghanistan, with a detailed representation of the Arabian Peninsula. The map's detailing in Arabia is based on Nicolas Sanson's influential 1654 map, which was one of the most accurate and detailed depictions of the region up to the mid-seventeenth century. The decorative title cartouche is richly adorned with images of exotic figures, animals, and a merchant ship, symbolizing the region's historical trade importance. Additionally, a mapmaker is shown working with traditional tools, adding a touch of authenticity to the cartographic art. This is the fourth state of the map, published between 1691 and 1696. The map measures 21.8 inches in width by 18.5 inches in height, featuring a sharp impression, with minimal staining and a carefully repaired centerfold separation at the bottom. Located in Langweer, NL

American stationery with in the top the following text printed: E pluribus unum – Latin for "Out of many, one" (also translated as "One out of many" or "One from many") – is a traditional motto of the United States, appearing on the Great Seal along with Annuit cœptis (Latin for "he approves the undertaking [lit. 'things undertaken']") and Novus ordo seclorum (Latin for "New order of the ages"); its inclusion on the seal was approved by an Act of Congress in 1782. While its status as national motto was for many years unofficial, E pluribus unum was still considered the de facto motto of the United States from its early history. Eventually, the United States Congress passed an act (H. J. Resolution 396), adopting "In God We Trust" as the official motto in 1956. The thirteen letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM makes its use symbolic of the thirteen original states like the thirteen stripes on the US flag. The meaning of the phrase originates from the concept that out of the union of the original Thirteen Colonies emerged a new single nation. It is emblazoned across the scroll and clenched in the eagle's beak on the Great Seal of the United States. (Source: wikipedia) Text below the portraits: "The Presidents of our Great Republic." Letter paper with hand-colored engraving showing the portraits of the 14 presidents of the USA from George Washington up to Franklin Pierce...

Antique Map of Picardy, Aroits and French Flanders by Bonne, c.1780
Antique Map of Picardy, Aroits and French Flanders by Bonne, c.1780

Antique Map of Picardy, Aroits and French Flanders by Bonne, c.1780

Located in Langweer, NL

Antique map titled 'Carte des Gouvernements de Flandre Francoise, d'Artois, de Picardie et du Boulenois.' An attractive example of Rigobert Bonne's 1771 decorative map of the French regions of Picardy, Artois, and French Flanders. Covers the region in full from the English Chanel to Normandy. A large decorative title cartouche appears in the upper right. Source unknown, to be determined. Artists and Engravers: Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795 ) was one of the most important cartographers of the late 18th century. In 1773 he succeeded Jacques Bellin as Royal Cartographer to France in the office of the Hydrographer at the Depôt de la Marine. Working in his official capacity Bonne compiled some of the most detailed and accurate maps of the period. Bonne's work represents an important step in the evolution of the cartographic ideology away from the decorative work of the 17th and early 18th century towards a more detail oriented and practical aesthetic. With regard to the rendering of terrain Bonne maps...

Extra Large Crucifix with Hand Carved Oak Corpus of Christ for Church or Chapel

Extra Large Crucifix with Hand Carved Oak Corpus of Christ for Church or Chapel

Located in Lisse, NL

Beautifully carved and large size corpus of Jesus, made in the Arts & Crafts era. This meaningful and unique crucifix from the early 1900s comes with a larger than life, hand carved oak Corpus of Christ. The details in the anatomy of this Christ are very well carved and they clearly reveal the suffering and dehydration that His body endured in the final days of his life. The artist/sculptor is clearly showing us the image of Jesus when or right after he bowed his head and died. The solid oak cross is original to this corpus and it was given a different color so that the unique and impressive corpus stands out perfectly. Have you also noticed the perfectly carved and thick crown of thorns on the head of Christ. The patina of this excellent condition and large corpus is another great feature that will never fail to impress. The former owners gave us the photo that you see in image 3 in this listing and in it you can see where this antique corpus...
