Hokai Box

A fine & large antique Japanese Meji period lacquer lidded Hokai box with chased brass hardware and original ropes, circa 1890.

This late 19th century Hokai shell box was made in Japan with black lacquered wood and brass.

This is a good example of a Japanese Hokai box that was used to store shells for the traditional game of Kia-awase.

Hokai boxes are transitionally used in Japan to store and carry shells for Kai-awase game in Edo and Meiji Period.
