18th Century Islamic Carved Agate Amulet with Qur'anic Inscription

18th Century Islamic Carved Agate Amulet with Qur'anic Inscription

Located in Nottingham, GB

A finely engraved Islamic talismanic plaque carved from pale agate or chalcedony, decorated with elegant Arabic Qur'anic calligraphy enhanced by contrasting black-filled engraving. Likely produced in Iran or the wider Persianate world during the 18th or 19th century, the plaque exemplifies the rich tradition of carved hardstone devotional objects created for both spiritual protection and personal contemplation. The square composition is carefully arranged with a central calligraphic panel enclosed by successive bands of inscription and delicately engraved floral ornament, reflecting the balance and refinement characteristic of Persian Islamic design. Portions of the inscription appear to include verses from Ayat al-Kursi (The Throne Verse), one of the most revered passages of the Qur'an and a text long associated with divine protection, blessing, and safeguarding against harm. Hardstone talismans of this type were treasured as personal devotional objects, valued for both their religious significance and the exceptional skill required to engrave intricate Qur'anic texts into agate and chalcedony. Combining spiritual symbolism with masterful lapidary craftsmanship, this plaque is an outstanding example of Islamic engraved...

Islamic Carnelian Amulet with Qur'anic Inscription, 19th Century
Islamic Carnelian Amulet with Qur'anic Inscription, 19th Century

Islamic Carnelian Amulet with Qur'anic Inscription, 19th Century

Located in Nottingham, GB

A finely engraved Islamic talismanic amulet plaque carved from richly coloured red-orange carnelian, displaying beautifully executed Arabic Qur'anic calligraphy. The central inscription bears the celebrated Qur'anic phrase from Surah As-Saff (61:13): "Nasrun min Allahi wa fathun qarib" — "Help from Allah and an imminent victory." This verse has long been revered throughout the Islamic world as an invocation of divine assistance, protection, and ultimate triumph. Likely produced in Qajar Persia or the wider Indo-Persian cultural sphere during the 19th century, the plaque belongs to the enduring tradition of engraved hardstone talismans. Carnelian was especially prized in Islamic lapidary art for its beauty, durability, and longstanding spiritual associations, making it a favoured material for personal amulets and devotional objects. The circular composition is framed by a finely engraved outer band of Arabic calligraphy, creating a richly ornamented surface that reflects the sophistication of Persianate engraving traditions. The combination of sacred text, elegant calligraphic design, and vibrant natural carnelian results in an object of both artistic refinement and profound devotional significance. An exceptional example of Islamic engraved hardstone, this amulet would make a distinguished addition to a collection of Islamic art, Persian decorative arts, antique talismans...

Vintage Chinese Mahjong Set in Lacquered Box, Early 20th Century

Located in Chicago, IL

A test of skill, strategy, and luck, the game of mahjong (麻將) was invented in China in the late Qing dynasty (1644-1911) and has been popular ever since. Played by exchanging tiles to build the best hand at the table, mahjong uses 144 tiles engraved with three suits, two honors and a few wild cards. Literally translating to "little sparrow," mahjong is a game best played among friends - when the clacking of tiles and lively conversation recalls the chattering of birds. This antique Chinese mahjong set...

Japanese Antique Wooden Block Workbench 1900s-1940s / Display Stand Wabisabi
Japanese Antique Wooden Block Workbench 1900s-1940s / Display Stand Wabisabi

Japanese Antique Wooden Block Workbench 1900s-1940s / Display Stand Wabisabi

Located in Chōsei District Nagara, JP

This is an old Japanese wooden block workbench, believed to have been used in the early Showa period (1900s–1940s). The material is zelkova (keyaki) wood. The countless scratches, dents, and the smoothness of its surface are proof of the many years of daily use and the touch of human hands that have polished it over time. The iron fittings remaining on the surface tell the story of the work once performed here, while also serving as a striking visual accent. The inherent durability and beautiful grain of zelkova have gained even greater depth through the passage of time, creating a unique and irreplaceable texture. Left as it is, it stands as a powerful art piece; as a display stand, it functions beautifully to enhance the presence of whatever is placed upon it. There is a slight tilt, but this too is part of its individuality, telling the tale of its long history. It is not in perfection, but in the imperfections shaped by time, that the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi resides. This wooden workbench is more than just an old tool — it is a sculptural object that reflects the era and the lives of the people who used it. Whether in a home interior, gallery, or as store display furniture...

Important Ancient Chinese Effigy Pug Dog, Ming Dynasty 1368-1644

Located in South Burlington, VT

China, a carving of a canine “Pug”, Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644 CE Dimensions: 38 cm, 15” High Photographs taken indoors and out of doors for your viewing pleasure. The hand carved limestone beast shown on its haunches with naturalistic joyful expression and a well defined compact head, ears, noes, eyes, feet, and tail parted to one side on reverse with distinctive collar ornament seated four square on a thick base all-over showing a weathered surface from significant age. Formerly exhibited “Asia Week” New York City, Fuller Building, Hutton Gallery 2006. Provenance: ex collection luoyang, Henan Province, China. Includes custom display base as shown Catalog reference: 35 years collecting 35 treasures, Number 35, p.76 (photo) In ancient China, it is a well-known fact that several types of small dogs were bred and were favored pet gifts between emperors and kings including Lion Dogs, Pekingese and Lo-sze breeds. Some Lo-sze are pictured wearing collars with bells a frequent combination fancied by European royalty of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Lo-sze or pugs were prized for their compact body, good bones, flat face, square jaw, short coat, curled tail, side set back ears, and temperate disposition. History: Placing stone animals in important tombs can be traced back at least to the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE), some two thousand years ago. In ancient times, stone animals and human figures placed before imperial tombs symbolized royal power and privilege in addition to decorative functions. The first Ming tomb...
