Finding the Right Hat-racks-stands for You
Antique and vintage hat racks and hat stands solve the age-old problem of what to do with hats, coats or even an umbrella when entering a home while trying to keep the foyer or entryway tidy. The difference between the two is that hat and coat racks are usually for hanging hats and coats on a wall from hooks, while hat and coat stands are freestanding and may contain a space for umbrellas and walking sticks. Mudrooms can also benefit from hat racks and stands for better organization and a vintage touch.
Hat racks and stands from the 18th century were often simple hooks, although some were more ornamental. In Victorian homes, the foyer frequently contained more complex coat stands or hall trees, formed from elaborate cast iron or decadently carved from wood. These pieces of furniture introduced visitors to a family’s status or wealth. When homes became smaller in the 1920s, homeowners often relegated coat hooks to a closet.
