Honfleur Normandy Harbor Painting with Boats and Historic Architecture Artist: Josep Maria Vayreda Canadell (Olot, 1932 – Girona, 2001) Title: Honfleur Medium: Oil on canvas Subject: Harbor scene / Coastal cityscape / Historic architecture Artwork dimensions: 60 × 73 cm / 23.62 × 28.74 in Framed dimensions: 90 × 103 cm / 35.43 × 40.55 in Signature: Signed lower right Provenance: Sala Nonell, Barcelona; acquired by Ramon Moreu, as indicated on the original label on the reverse Frame: Yes, decorative frame included Condition: Very good overall condition, with minor signs consistent with age DESCRIPTION Elegant oil on canvas depicting the historic harbor of Honfleur, one of the most iconic coastal subjects in European modern painting. The composition presents a serene view of the Norman port, with fishing boats and sailing vessels arranged along the waterfront, set before a rhythmic façade of historic houses, slate rooftops and a church spire rising in the background. The calm reflections on the water create a refined atmospheric depth, giving the painting a quiet, sophisticated presence. The work is especially attractive for its cool chromatic range, dominated by grey-blues, misty whites, soft greens and muted marine tones. This restrained palette gives the scene a poetic northern light, very different from the warmer Mediterranean views usually associated with Catalan painting. Here, Vayreda captures the stillness of the Atlantic coast with remarkable elegance. The brushwork is controlled yet atmospheric, combining architectural precision with soft pictorial vibration. The reflections in the water, the quiet boats and the compact urban skyline create a balanced, decorative and highly collectible harbor scene. Honfleur has long been associated with major European artists and remains one of the most desirable subjects for collectors of French coastal painting, Normandy harbor views, architectural landscapes and European post-impressionist-inspired works. The painting retains its original Sala Nonell gallery label on the reverse, identifying the work as Honfleur and documenting that it was acquired by Ramon Moreu. A refined European harbor painting with strong decorative presence, ideal for collectors of Normandy views, French coastal scenes, Catalan modern painting and elegant mid-century European art. European art with a Mediterranean soul. ARTIST BIO Josep Maria Vayreda Canadell was a Catalan painter born in Olot in 1932 and active throughout the second half of the 20th century. He belonged to the distinguished landscape tradition of the School of Olot, one of the most important artistic centers in Catalan painting. He trained at the School of Fine Arts in Olot and later expanded his artistic education in Paris, where he attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. His career developed between Spain, France and other international settings, producing a body of work focused on landscapes, harbors, urban views and architectural compositions. Vayreda’s painting combines the sensitivity of Catalan landscape tradition with a modern European sense of structure, atmosphere and chromatic harmony. His works are particularly appreciated for their balanced compositions, refined light and timeless decorative quality. ARTISTIC CONTEXT / PICTORIAL INSPIRATION This work connects visually with the great tradition of European harbor painting, especially the views of Normandy and the French Atlantic coast. Honfleur was an essential subject for painters interested in marine light, architectural rhythm and atmospheric reflection. The painting dialogues with the legacy of artists such as Eugène Boudin, Albert Marquet, Raoul Dufy, Maurice Utrillo and Paul Signac, while maintaining the quiet compositional elegance associated with Catalan postwar figuration. Its cool palette, structured architecture and reflective harbor atmosphere make it especially appealing for collectors seeking a sophisticated European coastal cityscape with both decorative strength and art-historical resonance.
