Archie Musick Art

1902-1978
Painter, illustrator and author Archie Musick first came to Colorado Springs in August 1924 with a classmate after high school graduation aboard a Santa Fe freight train, realizing their plan to see some of America. He initially supported himself working on a road crew building a highway to Denver. In Colorado Springs he took Charlie Bishop’s three-week Lightning Painting course aimed at producing bucolic wilderness scenes painted on cardboard or on slabs sawed from logs that were popular with the tourists. He soon became oriented to the fine arts, having been introduced by a student at the recently-established Broadmoor Art Academy to Francis Drexel Smith, one of its founding members. After summer employment in 1926 at Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, Musick returned to Colorado Springs for summer study at the Broadmoor Art Academy with Randall Davey and Ernest Lawson, respectively, in 1927 and 1928. In 1929 and 1930 Musick studied with Kimon Nicholaides and Thomas Hart Benton at the Art Students League in New York. He enjoyed a life-long friendship with Benton who periodically visited Colorado and whose treatment of regionalist subject matter guided him in his own choice of Colorado material in the 1930s and later. Returning to Colorado Springs in 1932, he studied with Boardman Robinson at the Broadmoor Art Academy before going on to become art instructor for a number of years at the city’s Cheyenne Mountain School beginning in 1935. Musick created a number of murals under the Works Progress Administration across Nebraska and Colorado in the early 1940s. After serving in World War II, Musick moved his family back to Colorado to continue teaching in the Colorado Springs school district, where he had taught prior to the war.

Archie Musick Prospector’s Cabin 1937 WPA Era Modernist Lithograph Print

By Archie Musick

Located in Denver, CO

A historic 1937 WPA-era lithograph by American modernist Archie Musick titled Prospector’s Cabin, depicting a rugged frontier scene centered on an isolated mining cabin set deep within a dense mountain landscape. The composition captures the stark atmosphere of the early American West, where weathered architecture, towering trees, and dramatic terrain create a sense of isolation, endurance, and narrative tension. Executed in black-and-white lithography, the work demonstrates Musick’s precise control of line, shadow, and spatial depth. The scene is built through layered tonal contrasts, with dense forestry framing the central cabin and a foreground that subtly reinforces the harshness and quiet stillness of frontier life. The overall effect is both documentary and symbolic, reflecting WPA-era interest in regional storytelling and American labor history. This American modernist print introduces texture, narrative depth, and architectural grounding into a space. It works particularly well in curated, neutral, or gallery-style interiors where monochrome works provide structure and visual weight without overwhelming color. Created in 1937 as part of the WPA-era printmaking movement, this original signed lithograph by Colorado artist Archie Musick reflects his broader involvement in New Deal art programs and American Regionalism, where depictions of frontier life were elevated into modernist visual language. Very good vintage condition with light toning consistent with age; a museum-quality WPA lithograph...

Framed size: 25 x 31 inches. Estate stamped on reverse. Provenance: Estate of the artist. Francis Chapin, affectionately called the “Dean of Chicago Painters” by his colleagues, was one of the city’s most popular and celebrated painters in his day. Born at the dawn of the 20th Century in Bristolville, Ohio, Chapin graduated from Washington and Jefferson College near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922. He would set down deep roots at the Art Institute of Chicago, exhibiting there over 31 times between 1926 and 1951. In 1927 Chapin won the prestigious Bryan Lathrop Fellowship from the Art Institute – a prize that funded the artist’s yearlong study trip to Europe. Upon his return to the United States, Chapin decided to remain in Chicago, noting the freedom Chicago artists have in developing independently of the pressure to conform to pre-existing molds (as was experienced by artists in New York, for example). Chapin became a popular instructor at the Art Institute, teaching there from 1929 to 1947 and at the Art Institute’s summer art school in Saugatuck, Michigan (now called Oxbow) between 1934 – 1938 (he was the director of the school from 1941-1945). Chapin’s contemporaries among Chicago’s artists included such luminaries as Ivan Le Lorraine Albright...
