Charles Levier was born on January 26, 1920, in Corsica. He was the son of a French father and an American mother. He held a fascination with color and form that led him, at age 17, to the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris for private studies. World War II came along and Levier served in the French Army in North Africa, later becoming Liaison Officer with the U.S. Office of Strategic Services. Paintings by Levier can be found in countless private and public collections. Among those collectors are Mr. and Mrs. Peter Lawford, Frank Sinatra, Adlai Stevenson, Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Prince and Princess Poniatowski, Mrs. Dan Topping, Mr. and Mrs. Dean Martin and many others. Levier died in 2003.

Printemps
By Charles Levier
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
A beautiful woman sits at an open window, gazing down at a small bird who has landed nearby in this serene portrait by Charles Levier. Warm orange tones are played off their complements in shades of blue, the artist utilizing several different layers of oils to create a subtle and relaxed view of a spring day near the sea. Beyond the window a small chapel sits on a peninsula, surrounded tranquil blue waters. This work, like many of Levier's, belongs to the French figurative movement of the Glorious Thirty (Les Trente Glorieuses) - the golden period of thirty years after WWII which were a time of great hope and prosperity in France. Inspired by Hollywood cinema, Charles Levier sought harmony in composition and purity of color and form. His said that his creations represented "a light and delicate world, of dark and subtle shades and colors." Levier worked in a somewhat abstracted, cubist style. Additionally he often employed the French technique of "cloisonnism" (after the French for "partition"), a style of post-Impressionist painting with bold and flat forms separated by dark contours, also seen in this work. The term was coined by critic Edouard Dujardin on the occasion of the Salon des Indépendants, in March 1888 and was commonly used by artists like Émile Bernard, Louis Anquetin, Paul...

Charles Levier [Solitude de Pierrot] signed large oil on canvas circa 1950
By Charles Levier
Located in Miami, FL
CHARLES LEVIER – [SOLITUDE DE PIERROT ⚜ Oil on Canvas ⚜ Hand Signed Lower Right ⚜ Original Period Frame A THEATRICAL PORTRAIT OF MELANCHOLY “Solitude de Pierrot” captures Charles Levier’s fascination with the archetypal Pierrot from commedia dell’arte. With angular black outlines and muted pastel tones, Levier reduces the figure to its essential gestures, creating a poignant symbol of isolation and quiet reflection. The vertical format emphasizes Pierrot’s elongated stance, while his downcast eyes and red-tipped nose heighten the painting’s emotive impact. This work was acquired directly from the artist by noted Beverly Hills designer Dean Richard Kukuk and retains its original Martin Lowitz Gallery label, underscoring both provenance and historical context. WHY COLLECT THIS WORK? ✓ An early and expressive Charles Levier oil from circa 1950 ✓ Features the Pierrot subject, connecting to the theatrical tradition of commedia dell’arte ✓ Strong provenance: Martin Lowitz Gallery, Los Angeles, and the collection of Dean Richard Kukuk, Beverly Hills ✓ Retains its original period frame in excellent condition with gallery label affixed verso ARTWORK DETAILS: ▸ Title: [Solitude de Pierrot] ▸ Artist: Levier, Charles ▸ Medium: Oil on Canvas ▸ Creation Date: circa 1950 ▸ Country of Creation: US ▸ Signed: Hand Signed Lower Right ▸ Current Condition: Excellent commensurate with age. His subjects include harbor towns, still lifes, café society, and commedia dell’arte figures such as Pierrot and Harlequin. Levier’s linear bite and stylized elongations have invited comparison to Bernard Buffet, while collectors of Modigliani, Rouault, and mid-century École de Paris painting...

"La Vierge" Homage to Surrealism Original Painting by Charles Levier, Framed
By Charles Levier
Located in Encino, CA
"La Vierge" (The Virgin), an original mixed media on board by Charles Levier, is a piece for the true collector. Levier's vivid use of color projects from the painting, immediately capturing the viewer's attention. A rare, early work by Levier, he chose to paint a complex, abstract scene – an homage to surrealism, with clear influences from Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Pablo Picasso, and even Henri Matisse, with Matisse-esque female forms within forms. This work comes with great provenance from the 1950s from Martin Lowitz Gallery. Both the technical talent of Levier and his choice of abstract surrealist subject matter pair nicely with the beautifully crafted custom conservation frame. This masterful work is perfect for those who have an affinity for abstracts, surrealist works, and color-rich art. Artist: CHARLES LEVIER AKA CHARLES DE MONTFORT...
