Bristol Again This graphite pencil drawing ‘Neo Deco – 03-12-22’ follows after a couple of colored pencil drawings. These were fun to do but I wanted to get back to basics and to me that has always been black and white. There was another reason too. Some months ago I drew ‘Art Deco Nude – 05-08-22’ on Ingres paper, which I didn’t use for a long time. Next to the love for Ingres I was a bit worried how my new Faber-Castell pencils would react on Bristol paper. I did a couple of tests then on demand of Brugman Art who gave me these to try out. Initially they felt a bit sticky on Bristol and a bit too smooth. Today I have to withdraw this statement and replace it with newer and better experiences. Gradients My major concern was whether I could get smooth tonal gradients such as the ones in my Roundism series. Now that I tried to combine Pitt Graphite Matt with Bristol I see I can. The gradients are just fine whereas I can blacken the paper even more than with regular graphite pencil. It is even susceptible for rubbing out. Furthermore it gives me the ability to find heftier expressions, covering the total tonal bandwith from pure black to pristine white. Willow Trees This graphite pencil drawing ‘Notenboompark - 06-04-23’ follows my sketch of lambs in Clingendael of last week. Suddenly I wanted to do one of Voorburg again, the city where I teach art. In fact Den Haag borders Voorburg so an outsider wouldn’t take notice crossing over. There is this strip of vegetation stretching from Den Haag all the way to estate ‘Vreugd en Rust’. Towards the end there is this cosy little ‘Noteboompark’, adjacent to the Juliana-Bernhard Park. That’s the one I cross through on my way to Brugman. The region Haaglanden (the greater The Hague) is well renown for its lush parks. You can find lots of ponds, weeping willows and what have you not. This one is no exception and I liked depicting these willows on the verge of Spring. It’s very cold though but the sunshine almost seems to scare away the icy northern wind. Not Much Contrast Whereas the previous drawing was full of hefty tonal variations this one is different. Before I go into details let me state I took a picture of the scenery. The photo was taken from a bridge where I couldn’t draw. Although the view was great the lighting wasn’t. So I took another photograph a day later. Finally it was sunny again and it lit the trees beautifully. This having said this one proved to be a tall order. The thin leaves didn’t contrast much with the blue sky. Only enough to make a difference so I can show the light on top of them. On the other hand, I got two reference pictures that showed the best of both worlds. The vantage point was a bit different though but that didn’t bother me. I could use the first photo and just use the other one to interpret the lighting. Water Reflections The wonderful part was the reflections in the water. I just love them like I have stated dozens of times before. The funny thing is that reflections give you both a recognition of the trees and the water as such. How about that for a double whammy? I only had to mirror structures to get a maximum effect. The bridge in the back is the actual bridge I almost cross daily. Can’t wait to get my foldable camping chair...

Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head This graphite pencil drawing ‘Clingendael – 31-03-23’follows up my previous one of Delft. For no particular reason I wanted to draw a bit of nature again. Or is it that I long for nature blossoming in Spring? Whereas in the Po Valley, Italy and Spain people scream for rain we get it here in abundance. It’s raining cats and dogs during March and this everlasting wind. Bleh! Then again, March and April in The Netherlands are famous for their unpredictability. For the time being it’s sketching indoors and therefor I draw from the stack of last year’s photos. Lambs in Clingendael There is this specific spot near the entrance of estate ‘Clingendael’ where they keep some farm animals. Besides horses and cows, sheep can also be found there. I never have been a sucker for depicting little lambs, darling ponies and golden retrievers. The spot that marks this drawing was special though. The picture was from last May and sunshine was creeping through tree leaves. All of a sudden a little lamb was caught by the light, just about to drink from the through. Just a lucky shot with the camera I think which comes in handy on a rainy day like this. The moral of the story is this. A subject can’t be corny enough as long as it is lit in a beautiful way. A Break-Out This graphite pencil drawing ‘Gent – 08-05-23’ shows a different scenery for a change. Usually you see me wandering about in the Haaglanden area, searching for artistic motifs. This time a city in Belgium is on the menu. The reason was twofold. I wanted to break-out and see new places. Another was I had an meeting with an owner of a gallery in Oostende, called Galerie d’O. It’s a nice one and they show high class art. Exactly the place to send my work to so to be continued. Anyway, back to the when and why of this art work. Driving back on the E40 I passed Gent (‘Ghent’ in English). I thought I might as well take the exit to that town. Great Museum You see, there is this mightly fine museum (Museum voor Schone Kunsten or ‘MSK’) just outside the city centre. It’s also close to the highway and it turned out parking is free on a Sunday. So no searching for a parking lot, struggling through busy streets like in Amsterdam for example. Great collection and I specifically liked their Jeroen Bosch and Van de Woestyne paintings. After my visit I walked to the centre. There I saw why there was so much parking space in front of the museum. You litteraly could walk over the heads of all the visitors. Bus loads of tourists flocking the narrow streets. A bit disappointing that was. Not that I have a grudge against them. It seemed Gent has fully adapt her functioning to these massive crowds though. Lots of Döner and Dim Sum Palaces, fast food chains and pizzerias. Sint Niklaaskerk I had a vision of me sitting on the banks of the Leie. Taking a selfie with a beer and mussels for my parents. However, it proved to be too tall an order to execute. Restaurants at the Graslei were all full and mussels costed a staggering 28 euro. I settled for french fries stew from a famous Belgian ‘frietkot’ instead. Next thing was to take some pictures. There simply wasn’t enough space or a bench to sit on for sketching outdoors. I came across the Sint-Niklaaskerk (Saint Nicholas Church). At the back I had a nice view on the Emile Braun Square. Suddenly the sun came through the clouds. Plenty of leafy structures to capture. I had the same execution of drawing in mind as my last drawing of Berg en Dal. See how it would look applied to man made structures. Mere Suggestion I had great fun depicting people reclining on the grass. It’s rewarding how only some scribblings in the back can present lots of people. That’s due to the more elaborated and bigger ones in the front. The power of suggestion can make believe there is a lot going on. Makes me want to do some more in the next future. Looking forward to more better weather...
