My second to last one ˜Roundism “ 30-12-22 apparently shook up a bunch of people. Comments varied from great to ˜yet another tit pic. There also were prudes from various countries who scorned me for the subject nudity anyway. Throughout the years I became used to these reactions somehow. I also take into account the fact people from each and any nation are present on social media nowadays. With this variety comes a whole set of different opinions and views of life. I cherish them all. That is, as long as they cherish my opinion back. If they dont, then this art statement is for all those who lack the word reciprocity in their dictionary. Climbing the Barricades Personally I think the nude can be as much an artistic motif as any other. In fact I dont complain in the least about a world of other motifs. One could like to depict golden retrievers, red roses and other darling, save and sound themes. I see them on a daily basis on Instagram and Facebook among others. I probably wouldnt have made a big fuss because of contempt shown in the past. Thats what an artist is all about. I even like to provoke with my nudes a bit. A bit of sexiness but not too much. Just to be able to deny the presence of too much of it by underligning artistic aspects as well. Hmm, a bit of risque here an there. I love it! Why climb the barricades once again? Heres why. After Neo Deco “ 25-12-22 I wanted to end this year in the style that brought me success the last decade. One could also argue that I just dont know where this particular style is heading for anyway. Surely I have this other thing, called ˜Neo Deco but I am not sure yet where this is going. Recently I wrote about my uncertainties with regard of serving something old as a new style. That is how it feels like, sort of. Maybe its just that I am trying to forge something out of dusty air of a bygone era. Its definitely a topic I want to delve much deeper into in 2023. For now I named all things round ˜roundism and cubistically straight things ˜neo deco. A pretty daft distinction perhaps. What do you think? Golden Ratio The motif for this actual work was derived from a reference picture taken by Walter Bird. The last one I used one of his photos for was Art Deco Nude “ 23-08-22. Even though the style of photographing is typically art deco I think his work stands out compared to many others. Not only did he use heavy doses of light and dark but also cropped nudes within the frame nicely. The result is a perfect bodyscape image. Due to the striking roundness of the breasts and tilted body position I thought drawing roundish shapes were almost unavoidable. I spotted some nice curves I extrapolated outside the female form. The ones besides her hip culminated into the golden ratio curves. A suitable ending for this year. The ending and the beginning of something entwined, as it should be. A New Color Scheme This oil painting I would like to call ‘Rusalka’ in honor of the latest developments in Ukraine. It is an elaboration of my pastel drawing ‘Free Floating Blue Wave Nude – 10-02-21’. That one was based on a previous graphite pencil drawing ‘Roundism – 19-07-16’. It is one of those rare examples of doing one motif in all three mediums I came to master. Why this specific painting right now, one might ask. Well, after my last painting ‘Risque – 22-02-22’ I was in for something new. I felt I had exhausted that specific color scheme of reds, greens and yellows for the time being. Maybe it was that I also had to overcome some challenges on a level of color saturation. That is why I wanted to refrain from using reds this time and use to a new color scheme. Perhaps I wanted something cooler, more mysterious. All Hell Broke Loose Then all hell broke loose and the Russian-Ukrainian war started. Nevertheless did I have the color blue in my head for weeks now. Strange and how great our subconsciousness seems to work. The blue and yellow in the pastel may have reminded me to the Ukrainian flag somehow. The theme doesn’t have to do anything with the current war started by Russia at first sight. Then I remembered some of these Slavic folklore tales, stacked with goddess, nymphs and nixes. There was this thing about mythical mermaids. I guess they are present in many legends all over the world but a specific one I recalled: Rusalka. The Ukrainian tale talks about a young women that drowned in a river or lake and came to haunt it. She is not necessarily malevolent but you’d better be aware when you put your foot in the water as a young Russian soldier. How Blue Can you Get? Movement Another graphite pencil drawing ‘Art Deco Nude – 23-08-22’, inspired by again a smashing picture by Walter Bird. The last drawing shows a seated lady. Contrasts are always on my mind though. Not in the style but in movement this time. What attracked me in the motif was the angular position of the female form. I am not sure whether she stood still like this but it looks like some ritual dance. I can ask my Spanish model Julia who is a dancer to strikes these kinds of poses. All induced by Walter! Extrapolate Them The bodily features almost took up a perfect square. However, I wanted to make sure I wasn’t going to end up with too much negative space around her. Therefor, extrapolating her features into the negative space came to my aid. The planes that are born from this process support the overall expression of her moves, I think. Some of them I hached up to complete darkness, other to midtones. Vice versa I did in the positive form as well. The most contrasting tonal values (completely light / dark) I placed within the body. In fact, immediately after the completion of the first one I started the second in my studio at Brugman Art. However, finished a day later but within an hour in total. Surely this shows my enthusiasm. The Pitt Graphite Matt pencils and the Ingres paper to me are a perfect match. You have to know that I like to search for new ways to quickly put my ideas on paper. Charcoal simply is too stainy, even though it is quick and easy to correct. Pastel is also quick but falls off the Ingres paper quite easy without fixation. Freedom above All The West has recently become familiar with the phrase ‘Slava Ukraini’. Obviously everyone who is a democrat and values freedom above all can support the meaning of this slogan. It seems as if the world has split into the good and the bad all of a sudden. The free world is pro and some rascalious countries keep supporting Russia’s goals. Strange how Europe and NATO can feel united more than ever whereas recently disunity was rife. Strong Ukrainian Women Vesna – 14-03-22 was my last oil with the Ukrainian theme. Somehow I felt the story for me to tell wasn’t finished yet. My reference graphite pencil drawing ‘Hold Your Horses – 04-01-22’ had the Scythians as theme. Strange why I chose to do an oil ‘Una in Aliam – 01-09-19’ covering the same topic three years back. In particular it tells of the legend of the Amazons. Legend has it they were Scythian warrior women on horseback. No great mind is needed to associate them with modern strong Ukrainian women rising up against the Russian agressor. And so I read the story of a woman from Kiev who bought a sniper rifle just to be able to defend her city and country. This painting is to honor those women and of course all freedom fighters in the Ukraine in general. New World Order There also was another reason to do another Ukrainian painting, to me an urgent one. Instead of fearfully waiting for whatever new world order will arise I decided to create one myself. This painting all makes sense to me. Ukrainian’s struggle is not theirs but ours too. A couple of days ago I commented on a post by Jerry Saltz. I stated law school was the best preparation for my work as an artist. Now I know why. Becoming a master in international law makes me mastering my artistic diction as well. I cannot ever be a soldier but I hold sound weapons in my hands: pencil and brush! Everything Gold The statues symbolize my view on art. I think they are beautiful and the pinnacle of aesthetics. One of them is Anton Gratz’s and the other ones I don’t know who made them. Angular Times The next one in the Risque series. After my previous colored pencil drawing ‘Risque – 18-01-22 I wanted to experiment with angular structures again. The reason is that I already did one in my roundism style (Risque – 11-01-22). One could say I was looking for yet another challenge. In the description to aforementioned drawing I wrote about cross-overs between abstraction and realism. This time it was time to set loose this ambition of mine on straight-edges plains. That was a great one and I directly fell in love with her chair and rugged blanket. Notwithstanding her roundness by definition Julia happened to took this position with her arms spread. Her left leg was placed in a spectacular angled position. The result was a flash lightning, running from her toes up her leg and spine, branching towards her arms. The tonal rhythym of light and dark plains did the rest. I could not think of a better model and a better position. The Cat Executing the drawing and almost finished I felt something was missing though. It seemed the left corner did look a bit empty. It needed an introductory detail. A New Session This reclining nude is completed two days after the last model session I held at my studio. Being the first drawing I completed after July’s session means last month’s drawing has not been completed yet. This one was relatively easy though. It comprises a fairly simple composition with no technical or compositionary challenges. I could focus on soft skin textures and folds in the sheets. First I made a rough estimation of the composition in charcoal. I worked it out with Conté pastel pencils (black and white) later. Relax Baby! After the completion of my colored pencil drawing ‘Leiden – Herengracht – 14-09-21’ I was in the mood for some simple stuff, nothing fancy. So I had her take a comfortable position, reading a book on paradoxes I bought a couple of weeks ago at the Groninger Museum. I like these talks with my model because it both makes us relax and somehow this relaxation speaks through the musculature in her back. I tried to capture that and I think I got away with it. Moreover, the bond between artist and model is important and when the right chemistry is there, magic can happen. Materials Completely coincidental the first thing I pulled out of the bag of drawing paper was a block of Strathmore Toned Gray. In my pencil and pastel case I found an old charcoal holder. Perfect for a session on the bed with me sketching on the bedside. When I come to think of it, the best model sessions are improvised, not fixated on too many poses.
