Craig Bassam Furniture

Australian

The work of BassamFellows introduces elegance and charm into just about any space. Founded by Craig Bassam and Scott Fellows, the celebrated design firm is focused on furniture and product design, architectural projects and branding. Authentic BassamFellows stools, armchairs and other seating pieces — typically made of oak, walnut or ash — are defined by the clean lines and alluring organic forms associated with the best of mid-century modernism.

BassamFellows is the result of a collaboration between Australian architect Craig Bassam and American entrepreneur Scott Fellows. Fellows, whose career included partnerships with the likes of Ferragamo and Corning Housewares, began to work with Bassam when it became clear that the pair shared similar creative visions as to the look, feel and quality of furniture and interior design. (The duo owns a Philip Johnson-designed home not far from the Glass House, a modernist marvel designed by Johnson in Connecticut.)

BassamFellows became an immediate hit among designers and decorators at the 2003 Salone del Mobile in Milan with the debut of their quintessential Tractor stool, a sculptural stool designed by Craig that draws on Swiss metal tractor seats and is made from locally harvested solid wood.

Bassam serves as the company's chief designer, while Fellows operates as the company's creative director, bringing expertise in commerce and brand strategy to the table. Together, the team has created furniture in their “Craftsman Modern” style for clients such as Geiger and Herman Miller, and has developed working relationships with leading architects, branding professionals, artisans and designers all over the world.

Spindle Counter Stool in Solid Walnut and Steel Designed by Craig Bassam
By BassamFellows
Located in Ridgefield, CT
Since its release, the Spindle Chair’s distinctive silhouette has appeared in a vast array of celebrated commercial and residential interiors. The phenomenally successful piece was inspired by a visit to Louis Kahn’s Exeter Library. Designer Craig Bassam’s imagination was ignited when he noticed the traditional utilitarian chair juxtaposed against the powerful geometry of Kahn’s building. Seduced by its elemental simplicity, Bassam realized an updated spindle back chair would fit perfectly within the BassamFellows ‘Craftsman Modern’ aesthetic. The BassamFellows Spindle Chair offers a new take on the classic piece, a descendent of the classic English Windsor Chair. One first notices its weightless quality, which Bassam achieved by using metal for the chair’s legs and spindles, giving the illusion of two floating surfaces. This contemporary reboot makes the spindles less prominent, evoking a less rustic, 21st century setting for the chair. A counterpoint to the metal spindles is the chair’s timber elements, including an ultra-comfortable ergonomic seat carved from solid wood. Given its updated minimal silhouette, ultra-light materiality and concern for comfort, it’s the kind of chair you can envision in many contexts. The Spindle Collection includes counter and barstool...

Eames Herman Miller Contura 670/671 Chair and Ottoman in Louis Vuitton Fabric
By Herman Miller, Charles and Ray Eames
Located in New York, NY
This is a rare and early example of arguably the most important and iconic Mid Century design ever produced, the Eames lounge and ottoman ( 670/671 ), this version was made in Europe, under license to Martin Fehlbaum by Countura, by Herman Miller circa 1950/1960's. Countura was the precursor to the later Vitra production. The chair and ottoman are in good condition, the veneer chair shell shows evidence of later screws etc, and the upholstery is a later Louis Vuitton vinyl...

Cluster Stool in Carved, Solid Wood by Craig Bassam
By BassamFellows
Located in Ridgefield, CT
Some of the most innovative, powerful design takes its strength from its sculptural elements. In certain cases, it is a sense of fragility that offers impact. At other times it is the imposing, muscular heft of the object that strikes a chord, a strong sense of presence. There have been many influential pieces of design from the last 100 years that have come from a utilitarian place. The Bassam Fellows...
