Cluster Stool in Carved, Solid Wood by Craig Bassam
About the Item
Some of the most innovative, powerful design takes its strength from its sculptural elements. In certain cases, it is a sense of fragility that offers impact. At other times it is the imposing, muscular heft of the object that strikes a chord, a strong sense of presence. There have been many influential pieces of design from the last 100 years that have come from a utilitarian place. The Bassam Fellows cluster stool is such a piece and was developed to meet a design brief for a large hospitality group.
The cluster is a simple, easy to move object for sitting on, and it stacks neatly away without the need to be hidden. A group of clusters looks “on purpose,” and pleasing to the eye. It belongs to a canon of utilitarian, Modernist stools, and looks like the kind of ultra-functional object you may find in a Japanese onsen, a design that may have existed unchanged for centuries. It is stark, but the dip in the seat and the rounded taper of its four legs is elegant and sculptural.

BassamFellows
For nearly 20 years, architect Craig Bassam and creative director Scott Fellows have been redefining American luxury with their own unique modernist philosophy of “Craftsman Modern.” Building on successful careers in luxury and design, they are responsible for a collection of furniture whose distinctive style matches the most elevated craftsmanship to architectural rigor and sensual minimalism. They create aspirational products that will last generations for real, modern lives. From the outset, Bassam and Fellows had a unique idea of what a lifestyle brand could be. They aspired to an intelligent lifestyle vision. Their work would be inspired by early modernism and its appreciation for the natural environment, and be infused with the resonance of classic craftsmanship. Their work would also, crucially, be built to last – it would be an artful riposte to and rejection of the disposable nature of what architect and writer George Nelson described as “Kleenex culture”. This clarity of vision manifested itself in the company’s first collection, which debuted at the 2003 Salone del Mobile in Milan. The pieces included the seminal solid timber Tractor Stool, a contemporized version of an old Swiss tractor seat. The finished piece artfully married two disparate aesthetics: the rigorous authority of architecture and the honest, humanistic character of the handmade.

- Spindle Counter Stool in Solid Walnut and Steel Designed by Craig BassamBy BassamFellowsLocated in Ridgefield, CTSince its release, the Spindle Chair’s distinctive silhouette has appeared in a vast array of celebrated commercial and residential interiors. The phenomenally successful piece was inspired by a visit to Louis Kahn’s Exeter Library. Designer Craig Bassam’s imagination was ignited when he noticed the traditional utilitarian chair juxtaposed against the powerful geometry of Kahn’s building. Seduced by its elemental simplicity, Bassam realized an updated spindle back chair would fit perfectly within the BassamFellows ‘Craftsman Modern’ aesthetic. The BassamFellows Spindle Chair offers a new take on the classic piece, a descendent of the classic English Windsor Chair. One first notices its weightless quality, which Bassam achieved by using metal for the chair’s legs and spindles, giving the illusion of two floating surfaces. This contemporary reboot makes the spindles less prominent, evoking a less rustic, 21st century setting for the chair. A counterpoint to the metal spindles is the chair’s timber elements, including an ultra-comfortable ergonomic seat carved from solid wood. Given its updated minimal silhouette, ultra-light materiality and concern for comfort, it’s the kind of chair you can envision in many contexts. The Spindle Collection includes counter and barstool...Category
