Since its release, the Spindle Chair’s distinctive silhouette has appeared in a vast array of celebrated commercial and residential interiors. Designer Craig Bassam’s imagination was ignited when he noticed the traditional utilitarian chair juxtaposed against the powerful geometry of Kahn’s building. Seduced by its elemental simplicity, Bassam realized an updated spindle back chair would fit perfectly within the BassamFellows ‘Craftsman Modern’ aesthetic.
The BassamFellows Spindle Chair offers a new take on the classic piece, a descendent of the classic English Windsor Chair. One first notices its weightless quality, which Bassam achieved by using metal for the chair’s legs and spindles, giving the illusion of two floating surfaces. This contemporary reboot makes the spindles less prominent, evoking a less rustic, 21st century setting for the chair.

The Spindle Counter and Bar Chairs recast their predecessor’s dimensions in modern, highly comfortable counter and bar heights. Once again, the illusion of two floating surfaces has been created by the use of metal for the chair’s legs and spindles and an elegantly carved backrest and armrest. Both versions feature commercial grade swivel returns, giving them broad application for a range of settings, including high traffic hospitality environments.

The work of BassamFellows introduces elegance and charm into just about any space. The celebrated design firm’s minimalist stools, armchairs and other seating pieces — typically made of oak, walnut or ash — are defined by the clean lines and alluring organic forms associated with the best of mid-century modernism.
Bassam Fellows, which is focused on furniture and product design, architectural projects and branding, is the result of a collaboration between Australian architect Craig Bassam and American entrepreneur Scott Fellows. Fellows, whose career included partnerships with the likes of Ferragamo and Corning Housewares, began to work with Bassam when it became clear that the pair shared similar creative visions as to the look, feel and quality of furniture and interior design. (The duo owns a Philip Johnson-designed home not far from the Glass House, a modernist marvel designed by Johnson in Connecticut.)
BassamFellows became an immediate hit among designers and decorators at the 2003 Salone del Mobile in Milan with the debut of their quintessential Tractor stool, a sculptural stool designed by Craig that draws on Swiss metal tractor seats and is made from locally harvested solid wood.
Bassam serves as the company's chief designer, while Fellows operates as the company's creative director, bringing expertise in commerce and brand strategy to the table. Together, the team has created furniture in their “Craftsman Modern” style for clients such as Geiger and Herman Miller, and has developed working relationships with leading architects, branding professionals, artisans and designers all over the world.

Light and strong, the Beachcomber Counter Stool evokes the sight of an old wooden single hull; it's lean, sturdy mast together with the rigging worthy of the high seas. Constructed of hand shaped legs and stretchers, each piece is carefully fit and pinned with hardwood pegs and wedges to last for generations, much like the sea craft that inspire them.
For every bar stool, we start with scrupulously chosen lumber; each board must consist of straight grain and have absolutely no defects. This is not just for aesthetics, the clear grain gives the stool its strength. The boards are then milled to dimension and shaped by hand using a combination of machines and time honored hand tools.
