New Year's Day 1937, celebration at the Jardin Anglais, Geneva

By Eugène Louis Martin

Located in Genève, GE

Signed E. Martin Dimension with frame : 76 x 66 x 7 cm This lively oil painting on canvas by Eugène Martin, titled Jour de l’An and dated 1937, captures a festive winter scene in Geneva, likely set in the Jardin Anglais during New Year celebrations. The composition is animated by a dense crowd gathered along temporary fair structures, rendered with brisk, expressive brushstrokes that convey movement and communal energy rather than individual detail. The figures, reduced to rhythmic silhouettes, animate the foreground and lead the eye through the scene. In the background, the Ferris wheel rises as a focal point, symbolizing modern leisure and public festivity, while Swiss flags flutter above, clearly anchoring the scene in its national and geographic context. Martin’s handling of paint is confident and economical. The palette combines muted winter tones—grays, browns, and cool greens—with strategic accents of red and white that punctuate the crowd and flags, reinforcing the celebratory atmosphere. The architectural backdrop and distant landscape are simplified, allowing the human activity to dominate the visual narrative. Stylistically, the painting aligns with interwar European figurative modernism, blending urban genre painting with a painterly, impressionistic sensibility. Executed in 1937, the work offers a compelling snapshot of civic life in pre-war Switzerland, combining documentary value with artistic spontaneity. Signed and dated in the lower right, this painting is a strong example of Eugène Martin’s engagement with public life and urban festivity, and presents an appealing combination of historical context, recognizable location, and dynamic composition. Quai Gustav- Ador, the Neptune in Geneva

By Eugène Louis Martin

Located in Genève, GE

Oil on canvas signed and dated (19)46 Dimension with frame : 80.5 x 93.5 x 6 cm This oil on canvas by Eugène Martin depicts a quiet harbor scene on the shores of Lake Geneva, most likely along the Quai Gustave-Ador. The composition centers on several moored boats resting at the water’s edge, including La Neptune, an old working vessel historically used for various forms of transport on the lake, such as goods, materials, and local service operations. Rendered with a restrained and harmonious palette of muted greys, soft blues, and subdued greens, the painting conveys a contemplative, almost introspective atmosphere. The expansive sky dominates the composition, its weight and texture contrasting with the calm horizontal line of the shoreline and the stillness of the water. Slender masts punctuate the space vertically, lending rhythm and structure to the scene. Martin’s brushwork is controlled yet expressive, with subtle surface texture characteristic of mid-20th-century Swiss modern figurative painting. Human presence is implied rather than shown, evoked through the working boats and harbor infrastructure. The inclusion of La Neptune, a venerable utilitarian craft, anchors the work in Geneva’s maritime and industrial history, adding documentary as well as poetic value. This evocative lakeside painting is a strong example of Eugène Martin’s sensitivity to place, atmosphere, and quiet labor. It will appeal to collectors of European modern art, Swiss painting, and refined maritime or industrial landscapes. Eugène Martin painting Swiss modern art oil on canvas Lake Geneva painting...

"Venetian Scene with Gondola" Colorful 20th Century Impressionist Oil Painting

By Johannes Schiefer

Located in New York, NY

A charming Venetian scene with gondola oil on canvas painting by the French artist, Johanne Schiefer. This painting is a wonderful example of his work from the prime of his career. Here you see figures walking with gondolas and an abundance of color and life. The magic is being felt with all the magnificent details, as Schiefer captures the architecture of Venice so beautifully; you can feel the energy of the day and the excitement. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a gold tone carved wood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 12 x 16 inches Frame measures 16.5 x 20.5 inches Johannes Schiefer was born in 1896 in the Netherlands, and quickly gained notoriety for his landscapes, still life’s and portraits. Schiefer won the Prix de Rome at the age of 19 and studied at the Düsseldorf Academy in Germany, and then moved to Paris where he continued his studies in art at the Beaux Arts, and later at the Villa Medici in Rome. He traveled to paint across Europe, primarily France and Italy and also Latin America. Like Picasso, Schiefer never permitted himself to be “type-cast” in a single monotonous style. If there is anything that typifies his work, it is his versatility, his deft handling of subdued tones to create a unique brilliance of light and color that stamps every painting with his own individuality. In February 1964, Ethel Kennedy...
