Jean Cocteau More Art

French

Jean Cocteau was a French painter, poet, designer, printmaker, playwright and filmmaker. He is one of the most important figures of French Surrealism, although he always denied being in any way connected to the movement.

Cocteau was born to a socially prominent Parisian family. His father, George Cocteau, was an amateur painter who committed suicide when Jean was only a child. Jean became famous in Bohemian circles as "The Frivolous Prince." In 1912, he collaborated with the Ballets Russes. After World War I, Cocteau met the poet Guillaume Apollinaire and the artist Pablo Picasso. In 1917, thanks to Sergei Diaghilev, a Russian impresario, Cocteau wrote a scenario for the ballet Parade — the set of this important ballet was realized by Pablo Picasso and the music was composed by Erik Satie. In the late 1920s, Cocteau wrote the libretto for Igor Stravinsky’s opera-oratorio Oedipus Rex. In 1918, he met the French poet Raymond Radiguet. They worked and went on many journeys together, and Cocteau promoted his friend's works in his artistic group.

Cocteau is well-known for his novel Les Enfants Terribles (1929) and the films The Blood of a Poet, Beauty and the Beast and Orpheus. During World War II, he created sets for the Théâtre de la Mode. In 1955, he was elected to the Académie Française and the Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium. He was commander of the Legion of Honour, a member of the Academié Mallarmé, the Academy of Arts (Berlin) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

This piece is original ceramic plate by Jean Cocteau, created in 1961. This piece was embellished with black, red, green, blue, and yellow enamels. In 1957, Cocteau met Marie Madeline Jolly and Philippe Madeline and created over 300 ceramics in their workshop at Villefranche-sur-Mer. At this workshop, he began experimenting with new concepts in pottery design. All these ceramic objects, he said, should look as if they were discovered in an archaeological dig. This piece is from a series of 8 ceramic plates that illustrate the ancient Latin...

Very Big Ceramic from "Les Argonautes" Vallauris Workshop "Les Argonautes", Vallauris: Isabelle Ferlay (1917-?) And Frédérique Bourguet (1925-1997) Isabelle Ferlay and Frédérique Bourguet founded their ceramic workshop in Vallauris in 1953, which they named "Les Argonautes", in reference to the famous Greek epic. Isabelle studied painting at the Fine Arts school of Lyon in 1940, then she attended the Fine Arts in Marseille. Finally, she finished her artistic training in Montpellier, at the Fontcarade national school, where she learned ceramics. Françoise dit Frédérique Bourguet studied at the Beaux-Arts in Montpellier until 1945 and it was in Sèvres, in Françoise Bizette's studio, that she trained in the art of ceramics. She created her first workshop in Paris in 1945, which she shared with Valentine Schlegel until 1951. The two women ceramicists then practiced modeling technique. It was in 1953 that she met Isabelle Ferlay and together, they decided to set up a workshop in Vallauris. They produce shaped pieces, sometimes molded, made of earthenware, enamelled in bright colors. In the 1970s they made stoneware cooked over a wood fire. Some ceramists frequented their workshop, notably the very talented Jacques Innocenti and François Raty.

DE ST JORRE, John [201] pp. Legendary Publishing & Media Group, Inc. Published for the members of The Links Limited Edition 2017 12"H x 9 1/2"W Illustrated from photographs by C. J. Walker The Links is a private club in New York City. It is located at 36 East 62nd Street on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City. Charles B. Macdonald, a golf champion and founder of the United States Golf Association, started the Links in 1917 as a place where powerful members of the golf world could keep the true spirit of the game alive. The club was established in 1916-1917 by Charles B. Macdonald, in a building designed in the Georgian Revival architectural style by Cross & Cross. In the 1960s, it was "a preferred social gathering spot for America's most powerful chief executives." By 2010, it was still a "preserve of the old banking elite", but not all members were WASPs. While ostensibly a book about the club’s spectacular collection of artwork, the book also gives a fuller history than the smaller 2004 book. It begins with the story of how the adjacent townhouse blew up in spectacular fashion in 2006, damaging The Links. While tragic, it was also an opportunity for the club to refurbish. Among other things discovered during the repairs the club undertook were original hardwood floors that had been covered by carpets for decades and bookshelves hidden behind wood panels in the Sir Christopher Wren Room (which serves as the club’s library). The history also discusses the creation of a new wine room where members hold intimate private dinners. Many of the pictures and paintings among the art collection at The Links are not golf related. Many are nautically themed, including those of Commodore Robert Field...
