Really rare and well painted portrait by Christine Walters Martin (1895-1982). Oil on canvas. Framed in a nice modernist molding. Signed. Artist Bio: Christine Walters Martin (1895-1982) Born and raised in Brooklyn, Christine Martin majored in art at Columbia University/Teachers College. She spent summers painting at the Woodstock Art Colony under the tutelage of artists there and continued her art studies at the Art Student's League in New York City. Over the years, her teachers included John Sloan, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Alexander Brook and John McFee. She also studied with Eugene Speicher, who recommended her for Portraits Inc, through which some of his own commissions came. Much later in life, in her 80s, Christine studied watercolor with Zoltan Szabo. Before marrying attorney George Martin in 1923, she taught art in the New York public schools for several years. During summers in the late 1920s, after having two daughters (Cynthia, 1924-2008, and Joan, 1927-2000), she went to Woodstock with her girls in tow, staying at the Hasbrook farm. In 1930, she and her husband purchased a stone house on Ohayo Mountain Road and lived there seasonally for 25 years. Among her closest artist friends in Woodstock were Emil Ganso, Florence Hardiman, Albert Heckman, Peggy Dodds, Joe Rollo, Henry Mattson, Mary Ellen Early, and Maud and Miska Petersham, along with Juliana Force (Whitney Museum). During many summers in Woodstock, Christine's daughters Cynthia and Joan kept up their serious piano studies under the tutelage of Vladimir Padwa and Inez Carroll. Known for portraits and landscapes, she was a member of the National Association of Women Artists and the National Arts Club, Gramercy Park, NY. Her work showed at the National Arts Club, Weyhe and Preston Galleries and the National Academy of Design in New York; the Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia; the Woodstock Art Association and Rudolf Galleries in Woodstock, Vermont's Dawson Grist Mill Gallery, and South Hampton College, among others. In 2009, she graduated from the GS faculty of the Kharkov National Academy of Municipal Economy with a degree in architecture. Member of the Kharkov Organization of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine (graphics section) since 2018. She took part in course for design and decoration. She practices techniques of decoupage, craquelure, painting on glass, modeling of polymer clay, drawing up fabric and floristic panels, felting. She is master in technique of sand animation. It works both in online animation and in the creation of original paintings made with sand on glass. She took part with sand animation in the annual charity evening held in London. Participant of numerous All-Ukrainian exhibitions and international open-airs. In 2010, she taught sand animation at the Beitdan Jewish Center (Kharkov). In 2013, she took part in a drawing course at the Family Art Club Family Development Center, in 2014 she worked in a ceramic workshop (Kiev). The peculiarity of the artist is in her individual manner of execution: Maestro Dobrovolskaya works with mixed technique of watercolors and pastels, which gives the work a feeling of hyper-realism. Portraits occupy a special place in her work, in which great attention is paid to detailing in order to convey the character of a person. In the technique of pencil graphics, as well as mixed (pencil with a liner), the artist depicts the city landscape - one of her favorite subjects, which is due to her training at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, under the guidance of remarkable teachers: N.I. My painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces. Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance. My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements.
