French artist Lyora Pissarro uses the word performative to describe her practice of both figurative and abstract works, which are rooted in painting. Currently based between New York and London, Lyora completed her formal education in Fine Art at Hunter College in New York after attending Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) for her foundation year. The often dreamlike landscapes of Pissarro’s works have in common the artist’s embrace of her artistic heritage. In the paintings of her great grandfather Paulémile, the youngest son of the Impressionist Camille Pissarro, Pissarro describes how she loses herself in the stillness of his landscapes. Belying a subtle complexity that revolves around her attempt to understand the artistic language developed over generations of artists, Pissarro embraces both traditional techniques and modern technology. Described as the ultimate young painter in GQ magazine, Pissarro has held solo exhibitions in both New York and Texas, and her work has been exhibited in San Francisco and London.
