Fine contemporary mechanical bird singing box by Reuge. The box beautifully crafted with an engine turned gilt metal frame stood upon four ball feet. To the panels simulated Lapis-Lazuli is delicately placed with layers of lacquer showing glints of metallic gold in the light. When wound to the underside and the leaver pulled gently it lifts the lid revealing a beautiful metal scroll working with a bird outline and nearly instantly after a brightly feathered bird majestically rises up singing while flapping its wings and bobbing from side to side. This particular box has been manufactured by one of the most respected manufacters to this day, Reuge of Switzerland and is complete with its box and instructions. Second half of the 20th century. This ingenious style of German Art Deco musical combination compact and cigarette case was known as a Camera or Kamra Compact. Versions of these were produced with sewing kits instead of cigarettes, integral watches and even with an actual camera. We have over the years had examples that were lizard, snakeskin, shagreen or leather covered but the most impressive, in our opinion, are these with wonderfully imaginative geometric designs and colors. This particular piece is in an ecru cream enamel that is minked in gray and accented in both polished and matte brass. It features a pull-out holder for lipstick with a push-button pop-up mirrored-lidded compact. (Complete with the original powder sieve and puff). Also on the front is a working Swiss made music box by Reuge Ste-Croix that is activated when the compact lid is raised.
