Antique George III Sterling Silver Quart Tankard
By Thomas Whipham I, Charles Wright
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
An exceptional, large and impressive antique Georgian English sterling silver baluster shaped quart tankard; an addition to our silver tankard collection. This exceptional George III sterling silver quart tankard has a plain baluster form onto a spreading circular foot. The body of this antique tankard is encircled with an applied girdle and embellished with exceptional later chased decoration depicting a man ploughing land using horses in a rural village scene. To one side the tankard is further ornamented with a fine and impressive bright cut engraved coat of arms divided quarterly per saltire with four lions rampant below a coronet with lion rampant supporters to either side. This Georgian tankard retains the original hinged hallmarked domed cover surmounted with a fine and impressive pierced decorated shaped thumbpiece and embellished with contemporary engraved initials and encircled with a later chased rural village scene and foliage decoration. The hinge is decorated with pendant drop style ornamentation. This large tankard is fitted with a S-scroll handle ornamented with an impressive heart shaped decorated terminal.  Imperial quart = 2 pints/1.14 litres This coat of arms has been researched and a definite identification has not been forthcoming. It is fair to say the likelihood is that the arms are of Continental origin, possibly Holland, Belgium or Sweden. The coronet signifies a noble family. Dimensions: Length from back of handle to rim of cover 17cm/6.7". Height to top of thumbpiece 20.1cm/7.8". Diameter of body 11cm/4.3". Weight: 25 troy ounces/778g. Maker: Thomas Whipham...
