Zaha Hadid Wall Decorations

British, Iraqi, 1950-2016

Zaha Hadid left an indelible mark on the architectural world, transforming the look of contemporary architecture with her striking abstract and modernist designs. Fluid forms and Constructivist aesthetics — such as bold colors and softly angular edges — are the keynotes of her buildings and her furniture. Hadid’s work is the essence of energy and drama.

Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Hadid studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London and made that city her home for much of her life. Hadid’s design sensibility was formed more by art than architecture. In college, she was first inspired by the Russian avant-garde school of artists. The influence of painters such as Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich is apparent in Hadid’s early work, in which she created abstract paintings and drawings to convey her ideas. The distortion of geometric shapes is a particularly prominent and recurring theme in her work. Hadid founded her firm in 1980, from which she launched architectural triumphs like the MAXXI Museum in Rome and the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art at Cincinnati's Contemporary Arts Center.

Hadid’s furniture and sculptures provide her admirers with the chance to bring the beauty and drama of her architecture into their homes. These designs are true centerpieces that fill even staid rooms with fluidity and rhythm. The organic forms of her designs bring a sweeping sense of movement to stationary objects. The furniture exhibits a kind of playfulness and creates a relationship with the user. Hadid transformed furniture into fine art.

In over five decades of photography Elliott Erwitt (b.1928) has never lost his characteristic intrigue at the curiosities of life. His unique ability to capture beauty in the mundane as well as the famous, to find the commonplace in the exceptional and vice versa. Fifth Avenue captures the chaos of Erwitt's native city with the late afternoon sun glinting on the bonnets of traffic. A member of the prestigious Magnum agency since 1954, he has photographed all-over the world and his images have been the subject of many books and exhibitions. Containing over 500 pictures, over half of which have never been published before, Elliott Erwitt Snaps is a unique and comprehensive survey of his work. These institutions joined forces with Artspace and six internationally renowned artists to produce this print portfolio. This print by Fred Wilson is comprised of a mashup of flags of Caribbean nations, presenting an idea about the relationships among the people of these cultures. Fred Wilson is a conceptual artist of African-American and Caribbean descent who's primarily known for rearranging art and artifacts in museum collections to reveal the inherent racism and gender politics that are often overlooked. First gaining notoriety in the early '90s with the exhibition Mining the Museum, in which he placed a whipping post from pre-Civil War America in a gallery and surrounded it with four ornate chairs...
