Harlem, New York 1931 - Original Fortune Magazine Print Art Original print from Fortune Magazine 1931 by Zdzislaw Czermanski (Polish, 1900-1970). The intersection of Lenox Ave and W 135 St. Harlem, New York City is depicted as the focal point. A man is seen at the crosswalk holding shoes in his left hand and a child's hand in his right. A crosswalk guard wears a blue suit as he stands in the intersection. Two black cars can be seen in the road. Signed and dated lower left. "New York '31" "Harlem" Presented in a blue mat. Mat: 18"H x 14"W Paper: 13.75"H x 10.75"W Image: 13"Hx 10"W Zdzislaw Czermanski was a Polish artist who was born in Cracow, Poland in 1896. Czermanski traveled to France and Brazil before settling in the United States in 1943. Zdzislaw Czermanski is primarily known for his caricatures, which have been featured in magazines such as Fortune. Collections of his work can be seen at The Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin. The collection consists of fifty mixed media paintings which are satirical portraits of many famous artists of the twentieth century, including painters, sculptors, writers, conductors and musicians, including Gertrude Stein, Marc Chagall, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Jean Sibelius. The media are usually a combination of one or more of the following: tempera, watercolor, chalk, charcoal, graphite pencil, and colored pencil.
