For genera-tions, the legacy of what Ernst Lüthy created when he established de Sede in the 1960s has been reflected in DS-747: form follows function. Be it sitting, sleeping, dining or relaxing – thanks to its essence of excellence, this all-rounder offers optimum functionality: with a few easy flicks of the wrist, the armrests can be tilted independently of each other and the soft seating surfaces enlarged. The exposed back lends DS-747 its lightness as a small sculpture with a high function – a sofa created to sit not on but in. The works, installations and room concepts created by atelier oï never cease to amaze. The unusual designs provide a sense of the key areas that the design col- lective has worked on over several decades: materials, form and light. The collective’s way of working resembles that of a top- class chef, who uses experimental methods with exactly the right touch. The designers succeeded in developing their very own de- sign language, which is nourished by a love of authentic materials and artisan skills. When it came to developing the DS-808 for de Sede, this sensitive approach – with its focus on fully understanding the material – proved to be extremely valuable. While working with leather in a practical way, the designers found a way to push the boundaries of the material in a playful manner – and to clearly place the unmis- takable hallmarks of classic leather design in the here and now. The leather is laid over the structure like a throw. The end of each square pouffe forms a dynamic wave, which makes the heavy material appear fluid and light. Created in 1975 by Florentine architect Roberto Monsani, Life is a modular sofa and an armchair with a soft seat. The compact design allows great versatility, while the large seat gives a pleasant cosy feeling. Providing a combination of full and empty spaces, it is an architecture that affects the space creating a harmonious balance between form and function. Originally created with a plexiglass shell, which was avant-garde for the time, today’s version reverses the direction towards the cabinetmakers’ world and expertise. Structure and upholstery An upholstered system with modular elements, made of veneered, brushed open grain curved birch plywood in black ash and dark stained walnut finishes. A hidden element hooking system. The backrest and seat cushions are in polyurethane foam with feather upholstery. The upholstery fabric enhances its softness, covers the sofa in all its parts and is completely removable. Possibility of purchasing additional cover upholstery. Brought out in 1996, the Quinta Strada seating range was a pioneering design of the modern style. Streamlined yet modularly flexible, the range is now reproduced with a sensitive restyling that is mindful of the new contemporary language. The black chrome finish of the feet, the thinner joining clamps and the lightness of the base and back support are elegant touches appropriate to the modern lifestyle. The various pieces in the Quinta Strada collection allow for numerous configurations and particularly interesting compositions even in corner situations. Born in 1953 he left formal education and began, almost by chance, his experience in the field of the padded furniture. Fascinated by the world that surrounded him, he eagerly devoted himself to researching building forms and techniques which have borne fruit for the companies in which he worked. In 1991 he opened his studio as an independent designer and in 1993 he came across Saba Italia. New challenges and new incentives lead to the creation of the “nomad sofa”: Taos, Ananta, Limes, Nesting, Pixel.
