Japanese Edo Antique Samurai Tsuba Sword Hand Guard with Period Nature Design
Japanese Edo Antique Samurai Tsuba Sword Hand Guard with Period Nature Design

Japanese Edo Antique Samurai Tsuba Sword Hand Guard with Period Nature Design

Located in Studio City, CA

A wonderful, beautifully aged Tsuba - Japanese sword hand guard often circular, sometimes square, which emerged as an essential part of Japanese sword craftsmanship during the Heian period (794–1185). Initially crafted from iron or bronze, over time they became more decorative in nature and more for show as the waring Samurai clans disbanded and became part of Japan's past. The particular Tsuba features a imprinted/hammered and inlayed (gold or copper) leaf or floral design and a gorgeous patina that is acquired from age and handling/use It is quite an appealing work. The piece is likely from the early to mid Edo Period (1603-1868) but perhaps older (Muromachi Period, 1333-1568). The Tsuba has a nice feel and wonderful aged texture to it. Would be a great addition to any Tsuba or Japanese Asian sword...

Rude Osolnik Signed Mid-Century Modern Spalted Wood Turned Vessel Bud Weed Vase

By Rude Osolnik

Located in Studio City, CA

A beautifully executed, handmade, wood-turned weed vase by master woodturner Rude Osolnik who is widely regarded, along with Bob Stocksdale, as one of the finest woodturners in American woodturning history. In 1992, he was presented by then-Kentucky Governor Brereton Jones, with the Milner Award, the Governor's Award for Lifetime Achievement. The vase is made from spalted wood (hard to make out the exact wood on the base) and features highlighted wood grain and shades of dark and light areas. It is signed "Osolnik Originals" and "Spalted ...." by the Osolnik on the base. A gorgeous and engaging gem of a piece that clearly makes an impact. Would be a great addition to any Midcentury Modern or wood-turned collection or make for an eye-catching stand-alone work in about any setting, midcentury or otherwise. Osolnik's work can be found in such permanent collections as: The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian The Boston Museum of Fine Arts Atlanta's High Museum The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago The Yale Museum The Speed Museum The Kentucky History Museum The Mayo Clinic...

A fantastic, quite whimsical, engaging Mid-century Modern abstract female nude sculpture by New York artist Albert Leon Wilson. This is one of the best pieces we have come across of his work. In the mid-1950s he relocated to Rochester, New York, where he worked until 1967 as an art director, illustrator, and photographer, winning over 20 graphic art awards from the Rochester Society of Communicating Artists. Afterward, he found his calling working with welded and bent metals and designing abstract sculptures often featuring figures and animals. He passed away in 1999. The sculpture is signed and dated (1968) with Wilson's traditional imprint/stamp. Wilson's work has been exhibited at the York State Craft Fair, Ithaca College, NY; Northeast Craft Fair, Am. Hans Burkhardt Signed Swiss California Original Midcentury Nude Figures Painting
Hans Burkhardt Signed Swiss California Original Midcentury Nude Figures Painting

Hans Burkhardt Signed Swiss California Original Midcentury Nude Figures Painting

By Hans Burkhardt

Located in Studio City, CA

A wonderful, highly engaging large original abstract pastel painting / drawing of three nude female figures by Swiss / American / Californian painter-artist Hans Burkhardt. This work is hand pencil signed and dated (1967) by the artist. An original, one-of-a-kind relatively large work by Burkhardt. Would be a great addition to any collection of his work or a stunning stand-alone art accent piece in about any setting. His original female/ women nude works are becoming rare and harder to find. Hans Burkhardt was born in 1904 in Basel, Switzerland. At the age of 20, he immigrated to New York to work with his father. From 1925 to 1928 he attended the Cooper Union School of the Arts, where he befriended mentor Arshile Gorky and Willem de Kooning—sharing Gorky's studio from 1928 to 1937. In 1937 he moved to Los Angeles, California. Burkhardt held his first solo exhibition in 1939 at Stendahl Gallery in Los Angeles. In 1945 he had a highly acclaimed solo exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum. Burkhardt spent most of the 1950s working in Mexico. Art critics of the time considered him a "great Mexican master” alongside Orozco, Rivera, and Siqueiros, and Rufino Tamayo admired his work. He returned to Los Angeles in the 1960s to create some of the most powerful examples of Abstract Expressionism of the time. During this time he also became well known for his richly drawn pastel abstractions of the human figure of which this original work certainly qualifies. He died in Los Angeles in 1994. Burkhardt's solo shows include: 1939: Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, March 27 – April 17 1945: Hans Burkhardt, Los Angeles County Museum of Art 1951: Museo de Bellas Artes, Guadalajara, Mexico: Exhibicion de Pinturas Modernas; Comara Gallery, Los Angeles 1953: Fisher Gallery, University of Southern California, Los Angeles 1957: Pasadena Art Museum, California: Ten Year Retrospective, June 14 – July 14; 1961-62: Thirty Year Retrospective (traveled to Santa Barbara Museum of Art, April 11 – May 7, 1961, Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, January 9 – February 4, 1962, Legion of Honor (museum), San Francisco, June 10 – July 9, 1962) 1968: San Diego Museum of Art: Vietnam Paintings...

Located in Studio City, CA

A wonderfully designed and crafted abstract Japanese studio pottery vase/sculpture by renowned potter Kinpei (Kimpei) Nakamura (1935- ). Kinpei Nakamura was born in the town of Kanazawa, A chance encounter with pottery master Kitaôji Rosanjin at a young age influenced him greatly and he began his artistic pottery career in Japan during the 1960s. Early on, he was heavily influenced by 20th Century Western abstract painting and sculpture as well as Jomon-style ceramics and modernist sculpture (as clearly seen in this piece). His experiments with forms and textures were considered quite radical at the time. He would later travel to the united States to further his studies (he was inspired by American potters such as Peter Voulkos) and career. Today his works can be found in major ceramic art collections and museums worldwide. The work is signed by Nakamura on the base and comes with the original signed and sealed box...

Located in Studio City, CA

A beautiful lithographic print by Argentinian-born Italian surrealist painter, designer, illustrator, and author Leonor Fini titled "Deux Femmes". Leonor Fini was arguably the most ferociously and heroically independent woman artist of the 20th century. Fini herself never accepted the label of "woman artist," and likewise, never considered herself a Surrealist despite her works having been included in nearly every major Surrealism exhibition from 1936 to the present. In the 1930s she lived in Paris, France where she collaborated with, or who were influenced by such prominent 20th-century artists as Jean Cocteau, Man Ray, Leonora Carrington, Salvador Dalí, Joseph Cornell, Dora Maar, Anna Magnani, Albert Camus, Jean Genet...
