Rococo Furniture

ROCOCO STYLE

Rococo was an aesthetic movement in the fine and decorative arts in the 18th century that found its inspiration in nature and fostered an overall lightness and delicacy of form, construction and ornament in interior design. Rococo furniture, while greatly influenced by trends in Italy and Germany, is often called Louis XV style — the movement having reached its best expression during that sybaritic French king’s reign.

The term “rococo” is thought to be a portmanteau of the French words rocaille and coquilles — “rock” and “shells” — organic motifs frequently used in architecture and design of the style.

When it comes to authentic Rococo furniture's characteristics, it is above all sensuous and social. The furniture of earlier eras in Europe had been heavy in every sense; the Rococo period saw the appearance of light-framed upholstered armchairs, side chairs and occasional tables that could easily be moved to form conversational circles.

The signal detail of Rococo furniture design is the gently curved cabriole, or S-shaped chair-, table-, and cabinet-leg. It imitates the bend of a tree limb or a flower stem. In a further reference to nature, furnishings were often asymmetrical and painted white, or in soft, pastel shades. Rococo has become a timeless style, and as the furniture pieces presented on 1stDibs demonstrate, its playful, sculptural forms can provide visual excitement to contemporary, clean-lined spaces.

Antique Swedish Gustavian Rococo Giltwood Wall Clock, Stockholm Circa:1900s

Located in Wembley, GB

Antique Swedish Gustavian Rococo Giltwood Wall Clock, Stockholm, Circa 1900 This exceptional antique Gustavian wall clock is a refined example of Swedish Rococo craftsmanship, dating to circa 1900 and retaining its original working mechanical movement. Hand-carved and richly gilded, this elegant wall clock embodies the restrained opulence and architectural balance that define Gustavian decorative arts, making it a timeless statement for curated interiors. The clock features a beautifully sculpted giltwood case, adorned with classical Rococo floral carvings, laurel swags, ribbon bows, and finely modelled ornamental details. The symmetrical composition is anchored by turned columns, a decorative shelf base, and a graceful ribbon crest, all finished in warm, luminous gold leaf that enhances both traditional and contemporary spaces. The circular dial, set within a beaded gilt surround, displays clear Arabic numerals and original hands, offering visual harmony and legibility. Below, the pendulum aperture and architectural elements add depth and sculptural presence, allowing the clock to function as both a decorative wall sculpture and a functional timepiece. Measuring approximately 54 cm in height, this piece is ideally scaled for use in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, libraries, dining rooms, stairwells, and refined interior settings. It works beautifully as a feature wall clock, a decorative focal point, or a collector’s object within classic, neoclassical, Scandinavian, Parisian, or eclectic interiors. Origin & Period Origin: Sweden, Stockholm Period: Circa 1900 Style: Gustavian / Rococo Revival This clock reflects Sweden’s late Gustavian tradition, where French Rococo influences were interpreted with Nordic restraint, symmetry, and elegance. Pieces of this quality were produced for refined domestic interiors and remain highly sought after by collectors of European decorative arts, antique clocks, and giltwood furnishings. Craftsmanship & Materials Hand-carved giltwood case Original mechanical movement (tested and working) Traditional gilding with rich patina Finely detailed floral, ribbon, and laurel motifs Each element demonstrates exceptional artisanal skill, with hand-carved details and proportional harmony typical of museum-quality Scandinavian decorative objects. A Palatial Cast Iron Putti Figural Torchere Attr. Val D'Osne, Paris, Circa 1900

A Palatial Cast Iron Putti Figural Torchere Attr. Val D'Osne, Paris, Circa 1900

By Val D'Osne Foundry

Located in Los Angeles, CA

A very fine and palatial French 19th-20th century allegorical figural cast-iron group torchere - sculpture - fountain - representing spring and the harvest, probably cast by Le Fonderies d'Art du Val d'Osne. The charming four-putti sculpture with a front standing putto holding a pole amongst wheat stalks, another putto kneeling and collecting wheat, a third one wearing a hat and picking flowers for a wreath and the fourth kneeling putto holding a bird's nest, all below an elongated classical stem with a glass globe (Electrified), circa: Paris, 1900. Overall height: 84 inches (213.4 cm). Width: 29 1/2 inches (74.9 cm). Circular base diameter: 24 inches (61 inches). Cast-iron had been in production during the 18th century but its inferior status to the more fashionable and delicate wrought-iron had generally confined its use to architectural work. By the early 19th century, however, rapid developments of the Industrial Revolution combined with the simultaneous burgeoning of a new middle class provided the impetus for a dramatic expansion in its application and in a short space of time a proliferation of iron foundries across Europe and America thrived on the production of everything from inkstands to railway stations. The use of cast-iron for garden ornament became particularly widespread at this time, as the possibilities for its mass-production at a fraction of the cost of bronze made it the material of choice for outdoor statuary...
