Located in Norton, MA
Japanese Woodblock Gakutei (1786-1868) by Harunobu Sugawara, original and unframed. ABOUT THE ARTIST Yashima Gakutei (1786-1868) Born in Edo as Harunobu Sugawara, Gakutei Yashima studied printmaking under Shuei and Hokkei. He moved to Osaka in the 1830s, where he designed landscape studies of his new home with a delicate and decorative style likely influenced by Hokusai. In addition to printmaking, he wrote kyoka (comic poems), often illustrating these verses in his prints. While a talented woodblock artist, Gakutei was also known throughout Japan as a writer. He translated and illustrated the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West. Gakutei Yashima’s oeuvre consists primarily of surimono. Pair Japanese Woodblock Prints La Mariee and Le Marie by Paul Jacoulet
Located in Atlanta, GA
An assembled pair of Japanese Woodblock print by Paul Jacoulet (French, 1896-1960) entitled La Mariee and Le Marie, Seoul Coree (The Bride and The Groom). Created in 1948 and 1950, the two prints were not intentionally designed by Jacoulet as a matching pair. However, it became popular among his collectors to pair them as a couple due to the subject matter and the complimentary and symmetrical composition. La Mariee shows a shy bride against a rather plain window like background which made her elaborate wedding gown pop. Silver and MOP mica were used both in the background and on her dress, the sash and its embroidery. It is signed in plate and marked with the Red Owl stamp. Le Marie sets the groom slightly back as a "floating figure" against a more elaborate Korean folding screen...

Ancient Japanese Painting Framed in Brass 'Traditional Dance'
Located in Milano, IT
Ancient and very rare Japanese painting made in the early 1900s, fine Japanese manufacture. The painting has a rectangular brass frame, with rounded corners. Internally we see a further frame in yuta, classic sand colour, very nice. Yet another very small brass frame that frames the picture. The painting is a print painted on black cardboard, with whimsical and strong colors, typical of Japanese art. This represents a scene with a man and a woman, intent on dancing, arm in arm and spinning in a typical traditional Japanese dance...

This print, which is titled "Profile/ Portrait of Young Girl in Kimono", is signed and sealed/ stamped in red at the lower right. It was created in 1957 and comes from a limited edition of 100 prints (the exact number of this particular print is likely listed in pencil below the matt but we have not removed the print from the frame to confirm the exact number). Junichiro Sekino Signed Limited Edition Japanese Print Yosaku Feeling Ill, 1948
Located in Studio City, CA
A truly wonderful and exceedingly rare early limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist/printmaker Junichiro Sekino. This print, titled "Yosaku Feeling Ill", is one of Sekino's earliest known works. A very dramatic image done in black and white, this work features the artist himself in a self-portraiture as he comforts his young son (who evidently does not feel well) in an almost playful and knowing manner. The print is double signed - once in white ink within the image and also hand pencil signed and numbered (9/30) by Sekino in the lower margin. The image features a focused and rather direct composition emphasized by the use of just the two colors. It is an exquisite and very rare/hard-to-find work. Quite engaging. A must for collectors of Sekino's work. Junichiro Sekino was largely considered, along with Kiyoshi Saito, to be one of Japan's paramount 20th-century master print artists. Both were prominent leaders of the Sosaku Hanga movement. Sekino's works can be found in many museums including: The Museum of Modern Art, N. Junichiro Sekino Signed Limited Edition Japanese Woodblock Print Girl in Poncho
Located in Studio City, CA
A truly wonderful and extremely rare limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist Junichiro Sekino This print of a pensive young girl dressed in a poncho and hat (likely in Mexico or Central/ South America) is hand pencil signed, sealed/ stamped in red, and numbered (appears to be 12/98 or 19/98) by Sekino. The image features a uniquely sparse composition and rich vibrant colors - very representative of the country this was likely initially conceived in. An exquisite and very rare/hard-to-find work. We have not seen this particular image ever come to the marketplace. Shanghai Deco Nanyang Brothers Tobacco Poster, c. 1930
Located in Chicago, IL
This framed advertising poster for Nanyang Brothers Tobacco dates to the 1920-30s and melds the meticulous detail of traditional Chinese painting with the nuanced color and fine resolution of color lithography. Known as yuefenpai, or calendar posters, these advertisements depicted fashionable women and intriguing scenery alongside annual calendars and product placements. Evolved from traditional nianhua paintings (New Year pictures), these advertising posters were strongly influenced by the Art Deco movement in the west and recall the economic boom of early 20th century Shanghai, an international center of business and trade. In this example, a young woman dressed in fine clothing and jewelry strolls through a traditional courtyard garden, surrounded by stone statues and towering pagodas. In the lower left corner is an open pack of Golden Dragon Cigarettes and below an array of cigarette brands, each a product of Nanyang Brothers Tobacco. The scene is surrounded by trailing vine scrollwork and text suggesting the poster may have been given as a corporate gift...

First Edition Woodblock Print Coucher de Soleil à Menado Celebes Paul Jacoulet
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Japanese Woodblock print by Paul Jacoulet (French, 1896-1960) entitled Coucher de Soleil à Menado, Celebes (Sunset in Menado, Celebes). Created in 1938, this is a first edition carved by Maeda and printed by Fujii and numbered 135/150 in Kanji verso. The print, a tongue-in-cheek subversive reinterpretation of the controversial 1863 painting Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe by Edouard Manet (1832-1883), is one of the most well-received prints by the artist. The work depicts a couple posed under the sunset in their traditional attires; except that this time, the male, with his back facing toward the viewer, is scantily clothed. The female, posed frontal, struck a more traditionally male pose...

Vintage Chinese Cigarette Advertisement Poster, c. 1930s
Located in Chicago, IL
This poster from the 1930s draws from a well known Chinese opera scene. It melds the meticulous detail of traditional Chinese painting with the craft of color lithography. These advertisements, influenced by the Art Deco movement in the west, recall the economic boom of early 20th century Shanghai, an international center of business and trade. Layered with imagery of traditional Chinese life, the poster is nonetheless an advertisement for the modern cigarette industry, with several brands displayed in the top left corner, including Lan Ting, Hong Chun, and Jade Rabbit...
