Yashima Gakutei (1786-1868)
Born in Edo as Harunobu Sugawara, Gakutei Yashima studied printmaking under Shuei and Hokkei. He moved to Osaka in the 1830s, where he designed landscape studies of his new home with a delicate and decorative style likely influenced by Hokusai. In addition to printmaking, he wrote kyoka (comic poems), often illustrating these verses in his prints. While a talented woodblock artist, Gakutei was also known throughout Japan as a writer. He translated and illustrated the 16th century Chinese novel Journey to the West.

An assembled pair of Japanese Woodblock print by Paul Jacoulet (French, 1896-1960) entitled La Mariee and Le Marie, Seoul Coree (The Bride and The Groom). Created in 1948 and 1950, the two prints were not intentionally designed by Jacoulet as a matching pair. However, it became popular among his collectors to pair them as a couple due to the subject matter and the complimentary and symmetrical composition.
La Mariee shows a shy bride against a rather plain window like background which made her elaborate wedding gown pop. A truly wonderful and exceedingly rare early limited edition woodblock print by famed Japanese artist/printmaker Junichiro Sekino.
This print, titled "Yosaku Feeling Ill", is one of Sekino's earliest known works. A very dramatic image done in black and white, this work features the artist himself in a self-portraiture as he comforts his young son (who evidently does not feel well) in an almost playful and knowing manner.
The print is double signed - once in white ink within the image and also hand pencil signed and numbered (9/30) by Sekino in the lower margin. The image features a focused and rather direct composition emphasized by the use of just the two colors. It is an exquisite and very rare/hard-to-find work. Quite engaging. A must for collectors of Sekino's work.

The image features a uniquely sparse composition and rich vibrant colors - very representative of the country this was likely initially conceived in. An exquisite and very rare/hard-to-find work. This framed advertising poster for Nanyang Brothers Tobacco dates to the 1920-30s and melds the meticulous detail of traditional Chinese painting with the nuanced color and fine resolution of color lithography. Known as yuefenpai, or calendar posters, these advertisements depicted fashionable women and intriguing scenery alongside annual calendars and product placements. Evolved from traditional nianhua paintings (New Year pictures), these advertising posters were strongly influenced by the Art Deco movement in the west and recall the economic boom of early 20th century Shanghai, an international center of business and trade.
In this example, a young woman dressed in fine clothing and jewelry strolls through a traditional courtyard garden, surrounded by stone statues and towering pagodas. In the lower left corner is an open pack of Golden Dragon Cigarettes and below an array of cigarette brands, each a product of Nanyang Brothers Tobacco.
