Napoleon III Bowls and Baskets
NAPOLEON III STYLE
Under Napoleon III’s rule, Paris underwent a great rebuilding overseen by Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann, which created grand avenues and lavish landmarks like the Paris Opera. Antique Napoleon III–style furniture was flamboyant and eclectic. It was also known as Second Empire style since it followed and referenced the Empire style of his uncle Napoleon I.
Developing from 1852–70, Napoleon III furniture was plush and ornate, matching the fashion for masked balls and socializing in salons. It borrowed freely from earlier French styles including Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI as well as aesthetics from around the world, from antiquity to Asian art. As writer Gustave Claudin remarked in 1867, the country’s architects worked in “a style which one would be tempted to call neo-Greco-Gothico-Pompadour-Pompeian.”
Napoleon III chairs were completely covered with velvet and lined with tassels; pouf footstools invited people to put up their feet. Sofas were upholstered with tapestries, and beds were adorned with gilt bronze and theatrical canopies. The addition of conservatories to homes led to new indoor-outdoor furniture, while the spirit of hygiene promoted by Baron Haussmann inspired bright, floral motifs.
Although the most ostentatious designs were for the elite, as seen in the Napoleon III apartments preserved in the Louvre, where red velvet, gilding and chandeliers create a cacophony of luxury, these trends influenced homes across classes as manufacturing made design increasingly accessible. Papier-mâché furniture allowed for elaborate shapes that would have been difficult to carve in wood. The malleable material was painted with chinoiserie patterns and decorative designs. It was mass-produced by factories such as Jennens and Bettridge with varnishing and mother-of-pearl inlays creating an effect reminiscent of Asian lacquer. (Surfaces that had been “japanned” — a specialty of Jennens and Bettridge — were intended to resemble lacquer work that was created in East Asia.)

Important pitcher and its basin in polychrome enamelled earthenware, model "Rouen", with decoration of lambrequins and vegetal scrolls, marks on the reverse in blue and marks in hollow «BH». Work of the end of the XIXth century.
In 1835, this factory was bought by the Irish David Johnston. He then produced pieces inspired by the very competitive fine English earthenware of Staffordshire. His company will employ up to 700 workers.
In 1844, Jules Vieillard, an employee of David Johnston, bought the factory in financial difficulty.
It was renamed Jules Vieillard & Cie in 1845.
Production is industrialized and refocused only on fine earthenware.
This quality earthenware will be awarded at the Universal Exhibitions.

Théophile Soyer (23 July 1853-20 February 1940)
His father, Paul Soyer, gold medalist in 1878, created after the 1870 war the famous work-shop at 4 bis, rue Saint-Sauveur in Paris, which produced innumerable pieces, including some for jewellery, furniture and bronze. Théophile took classes with Yvon and Levasseur and made his debut at the 1870 Salon with an enamel copy of a work by Le Barbier aîné. He then exhibited regularly from 1875 to 1882. After his marriage in 1879 to Léa, née Dejoux, nicknamed Lucie, a pupil of Lamunière, he shared the management of the firm with her, just as he shared the gallery in her company at certain exhibitions. He won a silver medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1889, then a gold medal at the one in 1900. He was president of the Société des éclectiques, a humorous society founded in 1872, and vice-president of the Chambre de la céramique et du verre de l'Union.
Founded in Paris during the Second Empire, the workshop directed by Paul Soyer (1832-1903) and then his son Théophile (1853-1940) produced various objects, paintings, mirrors, trays, vases, bonbonnières. Based on new sources of information, an article in l’Objet d’Art magazine, publications Faton, presents an update of the Soyer biographical elements and an analysis of their production marked by the neo-Renaissance and then Art Nouveau. A book of accounts allows us to observe the models of enamel "paintings", often from Meissonier’s work. The Soyers have greatly contributed to satisfying the taste of painted enamels that grew from the 1860s to the 1900 exhibition...
