This mantel clock is a wonderful piece of French Neoclassical design. It is an unusual and very beautiful item, which has been expertly crafted from gilt bronze (ormolu). The urn is crowned by a pomegranate finial and mounted with twin handles in the shape of rams’ heads with rings in their mouths. The urn is decorated with twisted and cabled fluting, a belt draped with foliate swags, panelled motifs and a ropework band. Antique Marble, Patinated and Gilt Bronze Clock Set by Gervais

By Ferdinand Gervais

Located in London, GB

This three-piece set—composed of a clock and a pair of flanking candelabra—is a truly unique and delightful piece of decorative art. The clock is modelled in the image of an 18th century sedan chair – that is, a covered chair sat in by a member of the social elite, which was carried on poles by two people. This chair-shaped clock case is crafted from gilt bronze (ormolu) and decorated with festoons and a flower finial. At its centre, there is a circular white enamel dial, which features Arabic Numbers, colorful swag paintings, and the manufacturer’s name, 'Fd Gervais / Ft du Bronzes / A Paris'. The lower part of the case is glazed, allowing one to see the clock’s sun-burst pendulum. Like a sedan chair, the clock case is carried by two patinated bronze putti...

Located in Brighton, West Sussex

A Fine Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze and Green Enamel Mantel Clock. French, Circa 1890. Stamped ‘Medaille d’Argent Vincenti & Cie 1855’ and with the initials ‘L.R’. This fine clock or timepiece has a spring-driven eight-day twin train movement by Vicenti et Cie, striking on a gong. The gilt-bronze case is of square-section with a stepped pediment surmounted by musical trophies above a Vitruvian scroll frieze and rosettes to each corner, below is a circular enamel dial with Arabic numerals and floral swags, set within a finely painted iridescent green enamel panel depicting a courting couple in conversation. The sides are similarly painted with fair maidens in a wooded landscape and the back cast with strap-work and Vitruvian scrolls; a circular hinged door opening to reveal the movement. Vincenti was a much respected clock maker, a Corsican who set up in 1823 in Montbeliard using machinery of his own design. Following his death in 1834 his business was carried on by Roux et Cie...

Impressive Antique Austrian Champlevé Enamel, Silver-Gilt and Lapis Lazuli Clock

Located in London, GB

Impressive antique Austrian champlevé enamel, silver-gilt and lapis lazuli clock set Austrian, Late 19th century Clock: Height 91cm, width 37cm, depth 37cm Candelabra: Height 64cm, width 24cm, depth 24cm Clock case: Height 97cm, width 44cm, depth 41cm Candelabra case: 67cm, width 27cm, depth 27cm Crafted in Austria in the late 19th century, this magnificent three-piece clock set was most likely gifted to the Imperial Russian family by the Austro-Hungarian Royal family. Its design is inspired by various cultures and styles, whilst its high quality celebrates some of the best craftsmen of the late 19th century. Of a tiered pagoda shape, the clock is surmounted by an eagle, its wings spread wide landing atop a vibrant lapis lazuli ball. The eagle is most likely a reference to Turul, a mythological animal which is a symbol of Hungary. This bird of prey is also a popular feature within Turkish traditions. Within a canopy, supported on four sturdy lapis lazuli pillars two prominent silver-gilt bells are hanging. These are carved with various motifs such as acanthus leaf design and connect to the clock mechanism below. The bells ring informing its users of the time. All four sides of the piece are inset with a clock, an unusual feature on an object of this type and a testament to its highest quality. The inclusion of clocks on all sides signifies that the antique is aimed to be a centrepiece, admired from all sides. The dial is decorated using the champlevé enamelling technique, whereby ‘parcels’ are carved into the silver gilt and into which enamel is poured. The 12 numbers are coloured in black with a gold outline and are surrounded by a white circular background making them stand out and easy to read. The hour clock dial is cast in the form of a sun, while the minute hand is represented as the moon. The two motifs symbolise one’s bright and gloomy sides of existence. The four corners around the clocks are mounted with three-dimensional female figures dressed in traditional garments from around the world. For example, one figure is dressed in typical Turkish clothing...
