About the Item

This three-piece brass clock set is wonderfully designed to look like a collection of Christian church bells. The mantel clock features a bell-shaped body which is set on four turnip feet. The clock’s body is decorated with stylised scrolling vines and quatrefoils containing half-length figures. The body is also encircled by bands which are inscribed in Latin with the Lord’s Prayer, ‘PATER NOSTER IN COELIS’ (our father in heaven), and the blessing ‘DOMINUS VOBISCUM’ (the lord be with you) and the response ‘ET CUM SPIRITU TUO’ (and with your spirit). At the centre of the clock’s bell-shaped body, there is a circular dial featuring black Roman Numerals within white enamel plaques. This dial is set behind a glass lens, which is encircled by a husk trail bezel. The clock is topped by a handle. The pair of candelabra feature bodies which are almost identical to the clock's in their design. In place of the clock’s dial, they have white enamel faces – one of which is marked ‘CENTRIGRADE’ and serves as a thermometer, and the other is a barometer which features French weather readings and the inscription ‘BAROMETRE ANEROIDE’. Each candelabrum is topped by three arms which take the form of stylised bird-like creatures. These support foliate drip-pans and urn-shaped capitals with leafy sconces.
