Vintage Set of 3 American Studio Pottery Cat Figurines

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Set of 3 vintage ceramic or pottery sculptures depicts cats engaged in various activities - one tabby cat is sleeping curled up in a ball, another tabby is stretching, and the orange cat is playing lying on its back with its paws up in the air. The cat figurines are created by different artists or studios; they are similar in size, making a lovely grouping displayed together. The grey tabby is marked with studio sticker on the inside, "N. S. Gustin Co, Hand-decorated, Made in USA"; the brown tabby is marked with the remnants of the foil sticker on the underside, and the orange cat is missing its sticker. The sculptures date to circa 1960s-1980s; due to the convenient size, the set can be used either as a shelf or fireplace mantel decoration...

Hertha Bengtson Minimalist Floor Vase, Mid-Century Modern, Sweden
Hertha Bengtson Minimalist Floor Vase, Mid-Century Modern, Sweden

Hertha Bengtson Minimalist Floor Vase, Mid-Century Modern, Sweden

By Herta Bengtson, Hertha Bengtson

Located in Round Top, TX

Large Hertha Bengtson floor vase for the Swedish company Rörstrand, circa 1950s. This partly glazed, signed piece is heavyweight, in excellent condition and has an earthy presence and coloration that is an inherent character of Ms. Bengtson's work. Hertha Bengtson (1917-1993) was born in the southern Sweden province of Blekinge. Early in life, she developed an interest in drawing, though her family lacked the financial means to support full-time studies. When she reached 18, Hertha finally pursued her interest in art at an evening school for porcelain painting. Only two years later, in 1939, she became employed as a pattern designer at Hackefors porcelain factory in Linkoping. Despite having only two years of evening courses in porcelain painting to back her up, Hertha had unwavering faith in her ability. After three weeks of trial work, Hertha was offered permanent employment, starting with pattern design and decor. Soon, she had a hand in most of the factory’s production. Beyond her design interests, she took on responsibilities including the management of production costs and payroll. In 1939, World War II broke out; the factory’s supervisor was called to duty. At 22 years-old, Hertha was appointed the head of her department. Two years later, Rorstrand’s Porcelain Factory in Lidkoping was in need of new talent. Hertha quickly seized the opportunity. Though she was hired to work with decor, Hertha’s curiosity steered her towards work in design. At that time, there were many accomplished artists established at the company, including Gunnar Nylund and Carl-Harry Stålhane. The level of camaraderie was equal to that of the competition for resources. Hertha had a strong interest in porcelain service, which was not considered particularly inspiring by her fellow designers. In the mid-1940s, Hertha set out to design the porcelain service of her dreams. The realization of this vision required four toilsome years engaged in the hard work of procuring quality materials, designing, firing, and glazing, all with Hertha’s characteristic persistence. When "Bla eld" (Blue Fire) was released in 1950, Hertha proved in no uncertain terms that even everyday service items can be an expression of artistic integrity. Blue fire was a sales success both in Sweden and abroad. Bolstered by the success of Blue fire, Hertha was given near full freedom at the Rorstrand to bring her artistic vision to life. Over the course of twenty-three years at Rörstrand, Hertha designed a total of six service sets, including the popular "Koka" (Cook), the refined tea service, "Ceylon", and the classically beautiful "Rosmarin" (Rosemary). Hertha also undertook small-production, experimental art works. At the same time, Hertha became something of an informal spokesperson for the factory. She was unwaveringly knowledgeable, dedicated, and eloquent. Being an energetic and ambitious professional in the 1940s and 1950s came at a cost to a woman. The possibility for work-life balance was limited, and it was no simple task to combine a career as a designer with normal family life. Hertha Bengston lived alone throughout her adult life, but maintained rich interactions with friends and colleagues. In 1964, Hertha’s surprise decision to leave Rorstrand was met with protest and disbelief. But Hertha wished to broaden her horizons by working with stoneware. She reached out to Hoganas...

19th Century Pair of Polish/German Stoneware Figures

19th Century Pair of Polish/German Stoneware Figures

Located in Dallas, TX

Presenting a lovely 19th century pair of Polish/German stoneware figures. Quite rare! Not a matching pair but similarly themed, with the little girl holding a basket of kittens with one kitten climbing up her front and the other of a little boy climbing a tree stump with a snail at the base. The ‘Little Girl’ is painted stoneware or earthenware and we are of the opinion is Polish in origin (or possibly Russian). It does not have any identifiable markings but it was originally with another similar style figurine (not included in this sale) which had markings that we were of the opinion were Polish markings. The ‘Little Boy’ is painted pottery and we are of the opinion that it is either Polish or German in origin. It is slightly different in style an texture to the girl and has a more ‘bisque’ finish. The facial features are more defined and remind me of German bisque dolls...

I.C.S. Art Deco Majolica Vase, Italy 1927-1940
I.C.S. Art Deco Majolica Vase, Italy 1927-1940

I.C.S. Art Deco Majolica Vase, Italy 1927-1940

By Industria Ceramica Salernitana

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Rare vintage ceramic vase features streamlined cylinder form with slightly flared out rim and graphic decor in off white, teal, black, and yellow palette. The main motif of abstract flowers on a branch, descending from a triangular structure, hand painted in monochromatic black glaze, is juxtaposed with the ombre off white and teal background and an abstracted flock of birds in shades of yellow. The sophisticated Art Deco style flowering branch, with contrasting, clearly defined, angular outline, is softened with rounded, Folk Art or Naive Art style, almost cloud-like bird motifs, asymmetrically placed on one side of the branch. The decor repeats on front and back sides of the vase with slight variations in colors and placements that are consistent with hand-painted nature of the piece. The vase retains obvious hand-formed concentric ridges throughout the whole body that add textural element to the piece and allow for slight pooling of the glazes. The bottom is concave and glazed in off-white, with the unglazed foot, showing pinkish beige clay; it is not a glaze defect, as it was left unglazed intentionally when the vase was placed in the kiln for firing. The vase is signed on the bottom with "Italy I.C.S" and Industria Ceramica Salernitana company's fish mark. It is in good vintage condition with age-appropriate small losses on glaze of the rim and bottom that do not detract from the quality and artistic expression of the vase and can be repaired professionally; please see pictures. I.C.S. was founded in 1927 by Berlin-born Moses Malamerson in Vietri Sul Mar on Amalfi coast in Italy. I.C.S quickly gained recognition by participating in multiple major European and American expositions and art competitions available, attracting many artists that were looking to escape the economic depression and political upheaval of 1930s. I.C.S. can claim the honor of having employed all the famous artists of the German (Tedesco) Period, including Studemann, Irene Kowalski, Hannasch, Richard Dolker...

Pisgah Forest Oxblood Ombre Vase, North Carolina Art Studio Pottery, 1939

By North Carolina Pottery

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Beautiful rounded vase is decorated with light to dark oxblood red ombre craquelure glaze; the glaze is in high gloss finish and is smooth to the touch. The inner surfaces are finished with semi-gloss off-white glaze. The vase is in good vintage condition; it is marked and dated on the bottom. Inspired by the Arts & Crafts Movement, Walter B. Stephen and his mother began their first pottery, Nonconnah, near Memphis, Tennessee about 1904. Without prior experience, they produced slip-decorated pottery of exceptional merit. Stephen moved to Skyland, North Carolina, in 1913, where he established a second Nonconnah Pottery, the first full-time art pottery in the state. In 1926, Stephen began the operation of his third pottery, Pisgah Forest. Here he explored Oriental glazes and forms, pioneered the first crystalline glazes in the South, and developed his cameo wares which resemble English Wedgewood jasperwares. Pisgah Forest and Nonconnah pottery have gained national recognition from numerous museums and private collectors. Major exhibitions of Stephen’s work have been held at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the Asheville Art Museum, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Tennessee, American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, California, the McKissick Museum in Columbia, SC, North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh, NC, and Southern Highland Craft Guild, Asheville, NC.
