Pottery Decorative Objects

The set of 3 vintage Jasba Keramik vases from the 'Aztec' and 'Mexiko' or 'Maya Tiki' lines of their Exotica series features relief decor, influenced by ancient Pre-Columbian civilizations. The sculptural vases in the set interpret traditional vessel forms like a pitcher in a contemporary vein while referencing Pre-Columbian art with an eclectic twist. The vases are decorated with tone-on-tone ochre brown matte glazes on the outer surfaces and semi-matte black glazes on inner surfaces, allowing the complex reliefs to dominate the composition. The vases feature a central wide band of brutalist, rhythmically spaced mythic animals, derived from archaeology or from a wide range of Folk Art sources. The handles are interpreted not as functional parts of the design, but as an important aesthetic feature that was commonly used by West German pottery designers and artists in context of Krug Vase (Jug Vase, or Handled Vase) for their expressive possibilities. Vintage or antique pair of ceramic multi spout tulipiere vases features Art Deco style form with one larger central spout, surrounded by 4 shorter and smaller spouts and mounted on flattened rounded body with columnar stepped foot. The vases are decorated in striking drip glaze, reminiscent of modernist Western European art pottery pieces of the period; buttery yellow, caramel brown, turquoise blue, celadon green, cobalt blue, and dark brown colors flow over the vases' surfaces, creating an organic, modern, almost impressionistic composition. The vases are marked with the hand-written matching model/decor numbers, studio logo, and FRANCE on the bottoms; one of the vases still has the remnants of the paper sticker attached. Delcourt sold his artistic, high-end pieces through the studios at department stores, such as Primavera at Au Printemps and La Maîtrise at Galeries Lafayette, as well as other upscale stores in France, but we were unable to identify which store the sticker belongs to. Sculptural, decorative set with elegant form, bold, artistic glaze, and exceptional craftsmanship will make a great gift to a collector or design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Art Deco, Eclectic, Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, Organic Modern, Mid Century Moden, Collected, or Contemporary. Henry Delcourt pottery was founded in 1903 by Jules Verlingue; in 1913 Verlingue partnered with Henri Delcourt, and in 1914 - acquired the HB Quimper pottery. Another chance in ownership happened around 1918, when the Manufacture de la Grande Maison HB, J. Verlingue and Co. was divided; Verlingue sold his shares in the company of Boulogne-sur-Mer to Delcourt, receiving Delcourt's shares of Quimper in return. The previous ties to Quimper pottery help to explain some stylistic similarities between the souvenir and tourist-oriented pieces, made by Delcourt pottery, and those of HB Quimper, but Delcourt's high-end, modern, more unique art pottery and ceramic pieces appear to be independent from the Quimper influence. Vintage ceramic bud vase features sculptural multi spouted shape and stunning textured drip glaze in earthy, organic brown palette. The gradation glaze color and abstract graphic pattern of the main decor emphasize the soft, rounded shape of the vase; the use of shades of brown, from dark espresso to mocha to off-shite cappuccino, creates rich and varied, but monochromatic palette that does not overpower the complex form and shape of the vase. The vase is signed on the bottom with LEE, that was Lee Levy customary signature; it is not dated, but the style of the piece is consistent with her Mid-Century Modern pieces created in 1960s-1970s. Leah "Lee" Levy (1922 - 2011) was an established pottery artist based in Upstate New York area. She was born in Pinsk, formerly in Poland, now in Belarus, and moved to the United States in 1929, growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts. She and her husband Irving started their first pottery studio in Long Island, New York, in late 1940s, while training at the Alfred University School of Ceramics alongside with some of the foremost artists and craftsman in America. Since 1946, Alfred University in Alfred, New York was a home for School for American Craftsmen, with the faculty that included Edwin Blanchard Brown, Ernest Frank Brace, Laurits Eichner, Philip Morton, Charles Reese, Ethel Mitchell, Robert Savage, Thomas Mclure, and most importantly for Levy, the renowned ceramists Linn Phelan and Herbert Sanders...
