Marble Vase Decorative Sculpture White Arabescato Marble Handmade Italy
By Pieruga Marble, Barberini & Gunnell
Located in Ancona, Marche
Important sculptural vase carved by hand from a solid block of Arabescato marble. Vase dimension: D 52 x H 45 cm. Available in different marble, onyx and quartzite. Limited edition of 35. Each vase is hand signed and numbered by the artists (engraved), 100% handmade in Italy and comes with a “Certificate of Authenticity”. Marble is a natural material, every piece is unique as each marble block is different in veins and color shades. All of our creations are handmade by Italian artisans and can slightly vary in shape and size. This is to be considered as a guarantee of a handmade object. All Pieruga objects are made of precious and natural marbles and onyx. Marble is sensitive to acid-based liquids, especially a prolonged contact with substances such as wine, lemon, vinegar, fruit juices, cola and alcohol can stain the surface. Cleaning should be carried out with a soft sponge, water and neutral detergent. Do not use metallic or abrasive sponges, do not wash in the dishwasher, do not use in the microwave. The color of the marble after washing can undergo variations due to the humidity trapped in the surface’s micro-pores. Once fully dried it will regain its original color. The brass inlays tend to oxidize over time, to make them return to shine again use a soft cotton pad soaked in a solution of water and traditional Marseille soap, gently rub over the brass inserts and rinse the surface thoroughly. We are against the use of chemical products, all Pieruga objects are processed and polished through long manual processes without the use of polishing liquids. Pieruga proudly creates elegant accessories and complements in marble through artisanal processes, bringing into dialogue ancient techniques of sculpture with advanced technologies. 100% handmade in Italy. Our Mission is a clear Signal of opposition to the enormous waste that occurs in the extraction and processing of large blocks of marble, tons of material are discarded and thrown, in disfigurement to the generosity of our mountains. Rediscovering the ancient art of manual sculpture we give new life to even the smallest fragment of marble, bringing to light its millenary beauty that is lost in more than 2000 years of architecture and sculpture. Pieruga Marble...

Renaissance Inkwell Calamelli workshop, Italy, Faenza, second half of the 16th
By Virgiliotto Calamelli
Located in Milano, IT
Inkwell Calamelli workshop (attr.). Faenza, second half of the 16th century Height 4.33 in; length 8.07 in; depth 2.95 in (11 cm; 20.5 cm; 7.5 cm) Weight: 0.800 lb (363 g) State of conservation: some chipping to the top of the mask around the mouth. Handle glued, without any restorations; minor chips in some raised areas. This object has the shape of a foot wearing Greek-style footwear, as can be seen in some raised areas. The foot is anatomically modeled with bare toes, while the ankle is partially covered by the footwear. On the heel, there is a small circular handle to support the object. The mouth of the container is shaped like a mask. The interior, completely enameled, suggests that the piece was intended to be used as an inkwell or to contain some other liquid. The base, however, is not enamelled. The painted decoration, scant and brief, consists of rapid cobalt blue shading between the toes of the foot, with more precise emphasis on the nails. It is accompanied by yellow citrine accents to enhance the forms. The mask is painted with the tip of the brush, to accentuate the tense nature of the eyes and to accentuate their outline. Thin strokes of yellow-orange line the interior of the mouth. Since the Renaissance, this decoration has been referred to as "compendiaria" and it characterizes the period of production extending from the mid-16th century to approximately the middle of the following century. It significantly influenced tastes at the time. It evolved from the polychrome style "istoriato" and transformed into a new style that "summarized" (compendia), or condensed, the ornamentation of the works into a few colors, placing greater prominence on the shapes. It was often inspired by metal specimens. Since the Renaissance, this decoration has been referred to as "compendiaria" and it characterizes the period of production extending from the mid-16th century to approximately the middle of the following century. It evolved from the polychrome style "istoriato" and transformed into a new style that "summarized" (compendia), or condensed, the ornamentation of the works into a few colors, placing greater prominence on the shapes. It was often inspired by metal specimens. This artwork finds parallels in similar objects all characterized by this refined style and produced in the city of Faenza and other Italian centers starting from the mid-16th century. The closest comparable example in majolica is a foot acquired by the British Museum in 2011 (inv. 2011, 8008.1). This was previously published by Carmen Ravanelli Guidotti in 1996 and later by Dora Thornton in 2016 during the conference on Renaissance ceramics...

1750 Venezia Italy Pair of Giltwood and Carved Red Lacquered Figures
Located in Brescia, IT
This is an extraordinary pair of warrior sculpted in gilded wood with red lacquer on the garments. These very rare pieces hail from the Mid-18th Century, and showcase exquisite craftsmanships through meticulously carved depictions of the garments, of the muscular arms and in particular for the refined and elaborate scroll designs on the garments in rare red lacquer. At the top of the long branch in the figure's hands there is a flat base that can be used to place vases or objects. The predilection for the exotic, which always played a preponderant role in Venetian artistic history, finds striking confirmation in the proliferation of these figures which make their appearance as polychrome furnishing elements already in the inventories of the 17th-Century. The 18th- Century decreed the triumph of these powerful figures sculpted in the round, variously used as torch holders, tray holders or vase holders. One of the most Venetian furniture expert, D.ssa Clara Santini, said about these magnificent sculptures: On rocky pedestals, this spectacular pair of warriors appears magnificently dressed in effortful oriental-style costumes. The bright gold of the dresses, embellished with red lacquer curlicues, are counterpointed by the ebony black lacquer and the red of the lips. The bodies seem to arch in the gusts of wind which also inflate their clothes The pieces are in very good state of maintenance and they are guaranteed original in every parts. The surface was only cleaned not restored and it is original. The pair of gilt wood and carved red lacquered sculptures...
